These over bearing "Toughest firearms laws in the world" were forced on Australians by the wife of the then Prime Minister John Howard after the tragic Port Arthur Massacre. They also banned all self loading firearms. Howard was bringing in the GST tax reforms, and threatened any state or territory that did not sign up to his gun laws that they would not get that gigantic revenue, which gagged all debate and variation by them. That's how we got our so called "uniform" gun laws, which of course have been since altered by every state so they are no longer "uniform". They were able to force legal gun sport people and even farmers to surrender their guns for destruction because they had just brought in compulsory firearm registration. So they knew where all the guns were, and all the law abiding citizens who had registered their guns had no choice but to turn them in. Of course the criminals had not done that, and Howard's laws have done little to stop gun crime in Australia INCREASING since those laws came in. I turned in a three shot .338W, and with the compensation (which was more than I paid for it), went straight out and bought a brand new bolt action, six shot capacity 338W. So what did all that accomplish? Crossbows were banned in NSW as a reaction to the Milperra Bikey gun battle - where no crossbows were used or even present!
