Hi Gerry! Thank you again for all these instructions. You are helping out many people from all over the world who have to pay a high price for heating. 2 weeks ago i built the same pipe version that you discribe so well in this video and am using it in a wood gasifier central heating unit. the pipe enters the furnace through a whole in the upper door(wood feed) and goes down to the lower part through the slot where the gasification takes place normally. There i set a small cast iron pan with a piece of 15 cm pipe for raising the sides of the pan. There is a cover on this pan 1 inch higher, it's a thick metal sheet with a 1inch whole for the pipe in the middle and many cuts from the grinder all around, crossing the center. This provides more contact of the flames with the metal to get a perfect burn and a minimum of residues in the exhaust. I tryed the babington version 2 years ago but it's much more trouble get everything running well AND that awfull noise of the compressor running all the time. I just ordered a flue thermostat to reduce the oil an air quanity when the they reach 250°C and there is also a heat exchanger in the exhaust which cools the flue 100°c down. Bye
@GerrysDiy
@GerrysDiy 10 лет назад
Well done Marcel. I am amazed with the output and how easy it is to get it working. I origiinally wsa going to do a babington burner but I had trouble getting the ball drilled so I went with this type instead. I have some more ideas and I will be posting more videos soon. Cheers Gerry

Gerry, here’s one you should attempt that you could get paid for your energy source. We leased out several acres to a tire recycling business that had extreme potential but was owned by an idiot. He ended up grinding close to a million tires with no ability to remove the metal. As you can guess, a fire broke out and soon we were making worldwide news. We used the equipment from our surface coal mining facility to build a dam all around the burning chips that were stacked 30ft high. Used several 6” and 8” pumps to fill the entire area with water. We completely extinguished the fire in 2 days, but the interesting thing is the superheated chips buried in the middle of the continuous lack of oxygen caused crude to separate from the rubber. A stream of overflow was mostly crude oil that we had tankers skimming the top of the sediment pond. That has always had me wondering if you had a way to heat a tire in a sealed, oxygen free atmosphere would the trapped crude be enough to feed itself sufficiently once everything is up to temp. Not only would the oil make heat, but the remaining material is very high quality carbon steel. The environmental unfriendly ash from the cooked product now becomes a high quality fertilizer that we used on the reclamation mix that had incredible results. Don’t know if we could make it happen in a garage, but seen nature create several tanker loads to be taken separate the remaining water. With the thieves controlling our energy prices again, may be with a try. I imagine crude will be tough to acquire once WW3 is played out to realize Chinas 100 year plan to own the world. Drafted in 1949, China will accomplish this plan years ahead of schedule.

Love it, very clever yet simple and effective! Subscribed! I need to build something like this, to burn my waste motor oil + cooking grease. I know I can probably (legally) dispose of it for free, but there's something about throwing away perfectly good fuel that hurts. I am curious why popular commercial waste oil burners use compressed air to atomize the fuel -- I have seen several gravity drip designs like yours, and I would assume that once the fire box gets up to temperature, the intense heat is all that's needed for complete combustion. Maybe the pressurized air is just to ensure complete combustion from the minute you fire the unit up, to ensure a quality burn even when cold starting, since the commercial units can be run off a thermostat. Either way, for a typical home shop, it would probably take years to pay back the difference between something like what you built, vs paying ~$2k+ for a commercial unit.

$30 Shop Vac, set to blow, plugged into a dimmer switch (variable air control), mounted outside to reduce noise, if desired.
@MittyNuke1
@MittyNuke1 3 года назад
Or one of those plug in leaf blowers, since they sometimes have variable air speed built in. Or an inflator pump, like for pool toys. But I agree with you on the shop vac. Home depot sells a $25 "bucket head" vac/blower which is awesome to use as a dirty water wet vac, but I think it would be perfect for this. You wouldn't even need the bucket, although I'd recommend it for support, for this application. Instead of a dimmer, you can also just use a valve to mechanically limit the air flow, as long as you don't completely starve the motor of cooling air. (not applicable for bypass blowers with separate cooling fan intake). You can also power a shop vac or any other universal motor off DC power, like from a few car batteries such as in an emergency /power outage situation. Or.... hook the chimney of this burner up to a boiler and a steam engine, to drive a blower, & make it completely self powered 😅😅 Either way I love it, very clever yet simple oil burner.

@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP 3 года назад
Slight mod/improvement for you- Build the fuel tank on top of unit, have chimney go up through the tank, warming the oil. No outside piping to ever chill the oil. Exhaust can be fabricated to be a "velocity stack" to harness it's pressure. Fabricate a "turbo" unit, inline with exhaust stream, to a pulley/belt, to run a 12v DC generator, that powers a pump for the warmed oil to spray through a nozzle in the Firing chamber. The turbo/generator unit could also power the burner blower feed. All generation is balanced with an AGM 12v battery. The only "outside" electricity needed is the actual heater duct blower- in times of outage, could also be generator operated.

I love that pipe , very good idea. I will make one. To make clean NO SMOKE come out of chimney you need the chimney so that it is NOT at the very top. you need a space above that so the hot smoke air can travel up so the soot can be deposited there and the chimney lower. You will notice the difference of clean warm air comming out of chimney instead of black smoke. WE WANT ENVIRONMENT SAFE HERE.

That is awesome. I think I'm going to try building a slightly smaller version. Where did the glass window come from?

Hi. It seems any type of oil works so long as you can get it to flow and can meter it with a valve. The fan is just anything I had around just for testing purposed. Cheers

I really need something in the workshop. It's getting pretty cold now. I love idea of making my own waste heater with my everlast welder.

Everlast welders are hopeless. I’ve an EWM, German made machine and it’s a work of art.

Well done! Do you need to have the air source blowing all the time or can you shut it off once the fire is burning?

Can that soldered joint explode ? What technique did you use in soldering?
@PeterLawton
@PeterLawton 6 лет назад
I watched the whole video and saw no solder. There is welded steel, but that's not going to melt or explode.

commenting before watching all the way, but wonder if your spring creates any possible type of air vortex increasing efficency?

I've been thinking about welding something like this up with my everlast welder this summer and will play with setting up some kind of vortex mechanism

Chris Pastuf copper has a very high melting point

Chris Pastuf copper melts at 1,984°F. I think copper is a poor choice for that. the guy that built this said the whole unit becomes red hot. hope he has no trouble. steel usually around 2500°F.

Hi Randy. I made a 7 part playlist about making this stove from a propane tank and burner and here it is goo.gl/BiE1Lk Check out some of the newer videos for a different non powered burner that makes as much heat. Here's a link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ShTLaYKjzxw.html Cheers Gerry
