Tip - buy your sand in bulk from your local material supply company. I paid $25 for 2,000lbs of sand (in 2022).The same amount of sand sold in 50lb bags @ $3.50/bag from Home Depot would cost $140. If you don’t have a truck but u have an suv or crossover you can bring your garbage cans and fill them or even use large Rubbermaid totes placed in your trunk. If your in the Midwest, you can rent a truck from Menards’s and still spend less than purchasing 30-40 bags of sand.

Built this today for my son. I used pressure treated 2x4's just because I liked the natural wood look. Easy as pie. Thank God for sliding miter saws. Thanks for the video and the time you took explaining.

For people curious about how much sand...I found an online calculator that says a 4 X 4 sandbox will use about 500lbs of sand if you go 5 inches deep or 600 pounds if you go 6 inches deep. So about a 100 pounds for every inch of sand, give or take. Hope this helps out. Great little project by the way Burb!

lol 😂 you’re probably right. At one point 2x4’s were over $10. It’s crazy how expensive everything has become. I literally think that every time i go grocery shopping. Most items have increased 100 percent or more and the packages are smaller.

@@burbbillyyes!! I did a remodel part of my house before 2020 2x4 in my area were about $2-3. Drywall $7-8. Now it’s like $6 for 2x4 and drywall is like $15!

I know the video is old and I saw the last video you posted was a year ago, but I'm still adding this just in case you ever stop by here to see the effect you had on people. I just got my first house with a yard and my puppy is having a great time digging up every plant I put energy into getting into the ground, lol. I was looking for a quick sandbox project I could install to give him a "creative" outlet and maybe keep my petunias in the ground for more than an afternoon. My dad is... Emotionally unavailable to help me with projects like this. Thanks for taking to time to explain so patiently how to do this project. Not only did it give me the confidence to do it myself, but having you do it with minimal tools just in your driveway showed me I had no excuse to put it off. Thanks for being my dad for a minute :)

Just curious how you made that out of 3 8' 2x4'S..... Your base is 186" which is 15' of board times 3 tiers is 45' of wood. 8x3=24'. Is my math way off or something? Lol. Great video. Not asking to be an a**. I'm genuinely curious because I want to build one for my daughters

Can you tell me what that type of saw you're using is called? I don't necessarily need a dewalt but I want something exactly like that. Looks very safe (as opposed to a hand circular saw)
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 5 лет назад
Hey Paul, It's called a miter saw. You're correct in thinking you don't need to buy a name brand, plenty of off brand miter saws out there will work perfectly fine. If you plan on cutting larger boards look into getting a sliding miter.

Hi Burb Billy. I see that you drilled clearance hole to allow the screw to go in deep enough, but do you need pilot holes to allow the screws to be driven into the wood below easily without breaking the wood / screw head? Do you use special kind of screw or driver? Thanks!

Why not build each level first then screw the levels together? Seems like it would be more stable when you're screwing vertically.
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 6 лет назад
You could build it that way but I didn't have any problems building it this way. The first one of these that I built I was trying to show my kids how you can make a larger piece of wood out of smaller pieces and this was the project I ended up with.

It would save a lot of time to line up all the boards and drill the holes all at once then put them together. Actually you would not need pilot hole in four of the board.

I chose to go 5x5. Any ideas on a cover? The sheets at Lowe’s only come 4x8.....thanks!
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 5 лет назад
You would need to get 2 sheets. Then cut them at 5 foot and then 2 1/2 feet. This way you end up with 5x5 and seam in the center. Put a 2x4 down the center so it is under the seam. You can attach the seam to the 2x4 and then fill in the gap with stainable filler or caulk if you are painting it

@burbbilly

I didn’t want the chemicals in the sandbox. I used regular untreated and then primed it and painted it with exterior paint. Is holding up well. You could use pressure treated and it may last longer. I chose to do it this way.

Not recommended to use PT it's treated wood and full of toxic chemicals. No knock to your work i'm sure it looks good but just incase you hadn't heard.
@foodooyou1

Personally I would have used carriage bolts going all the way through the three boards. I think it gives a cool look, but it's rock solid. One in each corner, and three throughout the length of each side. Price wouldn't be that much more than a box of screws.
@burbbilly
@burbbilly 7 лет назад
I hear you, cost would be a little more, you're going to be at least a couple bucks each on the bolts at that length times however many bolts needed. I've built a couple of these this way now and they hold up. There isn't a ton of side pressure on them and it's easy to just screw them together vs drill and bolt. I've got the 2nd video to this shot and am editing it today, hopefully up this week. I make a point of saying modify away! If you are using this as a raised garden container then bolts may hold up better and for sure will give you some added strength so it's a good point. Appreciate the post BB
