Learn how to build an ADU in California in 2024!
If you're unfamiliar with ADUs, they are accessory dwelling units, essentially an additional home or full living space added onto a single-family home.
Examples:
- Converting a basement floor into a 1 bed 1 bath unit
- Transforming a second story into a studio apartment
- Converting a garage into a 2 bed 1 bath unit
In this video, I'll cover the planning process, general knowledge, and share my recent experience building an ADU. While I won't delve into specific construction costs, as those can vary widely depending on locality, feel free to comment below with your ADU experiences and questions.
There are 6 different types of ADUs:
1. Detached: A completely separate structure, often referred to as a granny suite or casita.
2. Attached: An additional living structure attached to the existing home.
3. Interior - Upper level: Converting an upper-level area into a living space.
4. Interior - Lower level: Finishing a basement area for living purposes.
5. Above-garage addition: Constructing living space above an existing garage.
6. Garage conversion: Turning a current garage space into a living area.
ADUs are a significant topic in real estate, especially in California.
Many families are building ADUs for various reasons:
- Cost-effective housing solutions
- Multi-generational living arrangements
- Rental income to offset mortgage costs
- Providing housing for elderly parents while maintaining privacy
- Cost savings compared to purchasing a new unit
