This is the second half of my video explaining how I built my own rear diffuser out of foam board & fiberglass. This video focuses on the fiberglassing and bedliner processes. Please watch Part 1 for instruction on how the build the diffuser. I know it's not the nicest out there, but for under $100, its a fun, easy, DIY option.
Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
NOTE: The diffuser tucks under my bumper. The black you see on the outside is plastidip I sprayed on to mimic the "Mature" style of diffuser seen here.www.forcewerkz....
🔴TIME TO COMPLETE: About 3 hours to build. It could take many more to figure out the angles, how to trim it, & how to mount it.
The first time I did this project it took me about 20-30 hours total to complete. However a large majority of that time was spent figuring out how to make my idea work. I have never seen a diffuser like this, so it was completely new to me & I was creating the process as I went.
🔴PRICE BREAKDOWN:

Thanks! I wanted to make the video clear so someone could follow along if they wanted, & the only way to do that well is by actually building one. 👍🏻

Not that hard. I thought I didn't have the patience but ended up building a brand new bumper for my TT.

the steep angle on the back of the diffueser will cause alot of turburbulance and effectivly stall the surface although this could be used to reduce drag if there is no air going over the top of it it wont be making much downforce
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 лет назад
Yeah, this is more for aesthetics than anything else. I figure that without one, the air under the car is going to get caught up in the back bumper anyhow, so this has to be better than nothing at all, but this is just a simple, affordable, DIY option, not something that was designed in a wind tunnel. In part 1, I show how someone can make that angle rounded if they choose, but it is more work. 👍🏻

I've been looking so long for a simple video that shows how to make stuff with fiberglass most of them are so loaded with the chemical materials i couldnt understand. This is awsome video, perfect explained. I'd highly appreciate if you could tell me, Should i use only bondo and paint after for best result ?
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 лет назад
Thanks! Glad you liked it! I will say I'm not a fiberglass expert, but it worked for me. Once you fiberglass, you can sand it down for a better finish. Adding Bondo can help smooth things out too. I think just working with fiberglass alone would yield the best results, but it can be a pain to work with & smooth out. Bonds is much easier to use if you need to fill in some low spots. & yeah, then paint it. I think bedlinen works great, but it's not your only option. If you want to test things out first, you can always mix up a small sample & work on a small test piece or something.

Okay a few things, just built a new bumper out of fiberglass so I'll give you all some fun tips. First off, fiberglass Mat is wayy stronger than the cloth, I didn't know this at first but it makes sense because of the cross weave. You can also improve the strength of your project by riveting metal mesh together and fiberglassing over that. You'll end up with a ridiculously strong piece. I'm pretty convinced that fiberglass is actually not brittle at all, it's just douchebag manufacturers use cheap methods and product weak body pieces. The bumper I made is hella strong and durable. If you want a finished, professional look, sand the cured fiberglass done and coat the whole piece with Primer Surfacer (they sell it at auto parts stores). Use a foam roller to apply it on nice and thick then sand it smooth and you will get amazing results. Only use body to fill in big cracks and holes. Conversely, for an extra strong piece, Mix up some resin and spread it thick on your piece and let it fill in all the cracks. Your surface will end up smoother than glass. HawkEyeSTI did an excellent job on this video and now I'm super motivated to go out and build more stuff haha

The finish actually matters. Should be nice and smooth for cleaner air flow, other wise the diffuser is pretty much useless since the rough surface will just create drag...
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 4 года назад
Samuel Wu This is primarily cosmetic. If I was that worried about aerodynamics, I would not have given it an angle either. This is a fairly easy DIY for people on a serious budget. On a diffuser of this level, that finish makes literally no difference. There are many things that are a much bigger issue, like not having the entire underbody covered with diffuser panels.

How was it mounted? Doing a similar diffuser for my STi. It seems like the gas tank is right behind the bumper, so where did you mount the front of the diffuser?

What is I just do the find and then stick them to my bumper and paint them? I was just wondering if that would work or if it would be too hard to stick or what ever.. I am open to suggestions or opinions
@hawkeyestiguy

It most likely would not work. They really need more support, but I would recommend trying some different things. Maybe something will work for you. 👍🏻

Hey bro. I already have fins on my lip kit and I just wanna make them bigger. Should I just fibre glass it? How am I gonna attach em to the fins? Screeew or fibreglass it with the fins? Thank you so much
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 лет назад
What material is it made of? Screwing it is probably faster & easier, but fiberglass would most likely give a better & longer lasting finish.

Dear friend. I followed this video of you, and I have a question: To use this process to make a front spoiler, what would your resistance look like, since it could have a few beats for being in the lower part of the bumper? Do you believe it would be tough? Thank you.
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 лет назад
I would not recommend this design for a front spoiler. It doesn't handle any type of impact or scraping well & I think the air pressure on it would be too much. I would recommend something more sturdy for a front spoiler.

Hey man great DIY. Im actually in the process of making one myself using your way. How did you mount the diffuser onto the car? And when applying multiple layers of fiberglass cloth, do you have to wait for it to set for an hour before putting another later on or apply as many layers as desired all at once?
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 лет назад
That's awesome man! I'm here to help. 👍🏻 You can add multiple layers at the same time as long as the resin is still wet. It will start to get tacky & set up after about 15 mins (depends on ambient temp.) Just make sure air is not trapped between the layers. If this is your first time using fiberglass,you may want to try practicing a little on a test piece. It's really not that hard though, I never used fiberglass before I built mine & I picked it up pretty quick.

HawkeyeSTiGuy Thanks for the input! As for the mounting part. Is it pretty easy to drill holes to make mounting bolts?

Hello! What's the thinnest foam board I can go with this?
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 лет назад
1/4" thick foam may work, but it's more likely to bow & warp. I recommend using 1/2" for best results. 👍🏻👍🏻

Can you heat gun this to make a bend as well?
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 7 лет назад
I'm not sure, I never tried it. I think it will be difficult to get the foam to soften/melt evenly to make a smooth bend. You can try it though.

About how durable are the diffusers?
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 6 лет назад
Lambo1-_ gaming They are fairly durable. Obviously it wont be as durable as ones made of aluminum or solid ABS plastic, but mine has held together longer than I expected. Mine is about 4 years old at this point & the sides are starting to separate on one of the fins, but it also has taken a few bumps, been through multiple winters, & never had any maintenance done on it. I think it holds up pretty well for the money put into it.
@richieflexz
@richieflexz 6 лет назад
HawkeyeSTiGuy how would it be done with ABS plastic?
@hawkeyestiguy
@hawkeyestiguy 6 лет назад
Lambo1-_ gaming ABS can be purchased in sheets & then bent/formed with a heat gun or torch. I haven’t made one & am not set up to, but Con10der8 on instagram makes them. You basically make a template from cardboard & then cut the ABS to that shape & form it where needed. The fins are cut to shape, bent at 90*, & then attaches with rivers to the main diffuser.

Probably not. Honestly it just wouldn't be worth it. I just made this as a model, so it most likely would not fit the winners car well, possibly not at all. Also I'm not sure this one would hold up to well since I just did it as a demo, & I'd pay quite a bit for shipping since it is oversized.
