I needed some heavy duty leveling feet, but they can be very expensive, and none of the stores around me sell them anyway. I had heard of people using hockey pucks as wheels and leveling feet in the past so I thought I would take a stab at it. Plus I wanted to try my new welder.
NOTE: If you're welding galvanized material, be sure to remove the zinc coating and have adequate ventilation/filtration as the fumes can be harmful.
Materials:
3" bearing plates (4)
1/2" fender washers (4)
1/2" nuts (12)
1/2" x 5" carriage bolts (4)
Hockey pucks (4)
This was my first time welding so be gentle =)
Thanks for watching!

I've been a fabricator for 40 years and I'm always learning something new. Thanks for the idea. Pretty good job for first time welding.

I'm not a welder either but those came out great. Those are awesome homemade leveling feet. Better than you can buy that's for sure.

Well done! the second nut adds extra safety! what will work best is actually leaving it loose and tighten it with a wrench against the plate once you have set the heigth. I did that on one of my latest videos and I am absolutely pleased :)

Not really, lots have people have been using pucks for leveling feet for years. This is just a bit different version than the others I've seen. I wasn't originally even going to make it a dedicated video but I didn't have anything for this week and I thought people might get some use out of it.

Great idea! I've used 3/4" bolts, but like the extra base the puck gives you.
@juniormcdonald
@juniormcdonald 8 лет назад
You have done a great job....just a suggestion for future would be to weld nuts with the bolt inserted as they can warp and shrink with the heat from welding also keeps threads free from spatter
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 8 лет назад
That's actually what I did on the first set (not pictured) which ended up all crooked as the welds shrank faster than expected and pulled the nuts off 90. These I clamped the first nut to hold it down and cover the threads then used the bolt like you recommend for the second nut.

My garage has about the same slope as the Himalayan foothills. I’m trying to figure away to get the puck feet to conform to the slope. I am going to attempt a 4x8 version of Kings Fine Woodworking assembly /outfeed /workbench. The weight alone might beat them into submission. If it doesn’t, the table won’t be moved much and I’ll just mark the floor and make custom shims. Your levelers borderline on genius. Thanks for another great idea.
@AndreaArzensek
@AndreaArzensek 8 лет назад
That's a great idea, I wondered how you aligned threads of the nuts so the thread can pass through, but then I saw it - through the welding light :)
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 8 лет назад
Yeah sorry I guess that wasn't very clear in the video. But yes I just installed them backwards then put the other nut on finger tight.

I just subscribed to you channel some good tools your using for sure. I see on this video that you are using galvanized pieces. I'd like to caution you on that fumes from welding galvanized metal will make you very sick if you inhale them. You may have noticed the metal and fumes turn a little green. When welding galvanized metal you need to first grind the galvanized coating off far enough so that none of the weld touches it. This way it's not hazardous to your health. Hope this will help you in the future. BTW, I liked the way you did this and I'm in the process of building a new work bench in my shop, and if you don't mind I'll use your idea if I can find some hockey pucks here in Kentucky. See ya mark
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 8 лет назад
Luckily I did know about the risk of welding galvanized material. I sanded the zinc away before welding and had a large fan just off camera blowing the fumes away. But you're absolutely right thanks for tip.

How weird is this. I am just in the final editing stages of making the exact same project for my new assembly table. Mine are not as heavy duty as yours though. And does not include welding. I just used a T-nut in the bottom of the table stand.I hope you dont mind me publishing the video, as I put some hours into it and planning on launching it friday

That's pretty interesting... I wonder what the weight/compression allowance is for a hockey puck. It might be cool to fill the bottom of the hockey puck up with some sort of epoxy to help prevent the bolt from touching the floor, if the puck bends or compresses under a heavy load.
@TabLeft

Good question, It's pretty dense stuff I think it will be ok, but I'll find out the hard way :)

To take the galvanized coating off you can use muriatic acid or spirit of salt , 33% mixed , takes it to bare metal in no time

Vulcanized rubber like a car tire. Pretty dense strong stuff
@NightProwlerIncART
@NightProwlerIncART 8 лет назад
TabLeft Workshop, that kinda looked like galvanized hardware. If so you should be very careful when welding it. It produces poisonous fumes. You need to clean the coating off and have plenty of ventilation. It can really mess you up or even kill you. Just a heads up if that was galvanized.
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 8 лет назад
It's was galvanized, luckily I had heard of the risk and I sanded the zinc from the weld areas and had a large fan just off camera blowing the fumes away. But thank you , you absolutely right.

I figured you knew a little about it since you were sanding it. Just wanted to throw that out there in case it was coincidental. Keep up the good work.

@TabLeft
@TabLeft 8 лет назад
Haha yes yes it did! If you've ever stood close by when someone did a burn out in a car, it's basically the the same smell. Hockey pucks are just vulcanized rubber like a car tire.

sure hope those square plates weren't galvanized? that kind of gas fumes from the welding, and it might well likely, be, 'exit, Tableft' or at least, a 'slapshot' to the brain.

Trouble is the zinc still sweats out of the metal while you are welding making it a bitch to weld properly.
