Ever wanted to build an outdoor monster prop but got stuck on how to make it look like a monster... or make it weather proof? Yeah, well me too. ;)
This video will show a general outline of how I set about making one. Here is a link to a detailed written tutorial with additional pictures and parts links: www.halloweenf...

You are so nice but don't under estimate yourself. Carving is the weirdest thing. It looks hard but actually, with time and persistence - it is doable for anyone. A great tip I learned, "Carve away what doesn't belong.

Gee, Thanks a lot for the info. I was almost ready to re-cut foam without horn and mane. But I will just carve it as a whole. I was able to rent the industrial hot knife and hot wire from a local hobby store. Boy am I in loving it....LOL It really is like hot knife through butter. I think it would be easier to carve out of the whole thing. The key is how long that foam horn will be and if it needs additional support (like PVC center) if not - you are carving it either way. I had to sheath the Demon Horse's horns ayway - so it was still carving it down - same thing with the Hell Hound's tail.

See my other video, 'Terra's Behind-the-scenes...' It shows picture slideshow of a vampires I made. Should give you a bit of an outline to see how it can be done. I used a tutorial by LaurieBeast. You can find that tutorial by Googling: LaurieBeast Vampiress Morbida.

The horse was many bits and peices of foam and much bigger. The Hell Hound was more of a solid carve and smaller. I debated on whether to also do the Drylok but as I started to decide on the way I was going to do the scales it just seemed way too difficult of a step. I hope I don't regret it :) Oh, also, I didn't want to the texture of the Drylok on the hellhoud. Was looking for a more slick appearance. Drylok is gritty.

@InDarkSolitude Thank you. No, no problems with mold. On my tombstones the base is plywood and painted with Drylok and the bottom that is on the grass (for 30 days) gets a little grungy but I think that would happen to anything. Every other year, the bottom part gets repainted to keep it fresh. I use latex Drylok by the way.

@Scaryladyvideos

I didn't keep a tally but a quick guessimate would be $200? The foam is usually $24 a sheet and I'm guessing I used 4 sheets -ish. Maybe less.
@Scaryladyvideos
@Scaryladyvideos 11 лет назад
Thank you :) The Drylok does make it waterproof even though the foam already is, it's more to seal up the seams. It was very strong but not enough for people to grab onto it and stuff. The mane would be the biggest worry. That foam is cut into thinner lines. But, overall - it's a pretty tough monster. You could try more of a hardened coat like foam hard coat materials or maybe even fiberglassing.
@Nerakglaze
@Nerakglaze 12 лет назад
Hello Terra, I'm making a hellish Unicorn head, I traced the whole unicorn on my foam. Do you think its easier to carve horn and mane separate or just carve it out as a whole? It's just the head,neck and horn 34inches tall.
@Scaryladyvideos
@Scaryladyvideos 13 лет назад
@Yaoiloverel It's a 18' length of red rope lighting that was snaked around the PVC piping and held in place with zip ties. Am a little concerned about the heat. Seems okay but I'd try LED rope lighting if I were you.

Great job on the prop. I could do something with this but I see where it would be a challenge for many. There are people who cannot even visualize what a new paint color would do for a room in their house. No way they would have the vision to see this through. I would also have to have a reference image to get scales and such from.

just came across your channel. I really liked this set up. using the same material you did I want to build a velociraptor (or two) to mount onto my FJ Cruiser which I've had Jurassic Park stickers on for over a year now. my question is do you think using these are techniques it could withstand being mounted on top of a vehicle? thank you!
@Scaryladyvideos
@Scaryladyvideos 7 лет назад
Sounds like a terrific idea! For sure you'd need the inside supported with PVC to give it a lot of strength and mount-ability. Then, to withstand the windspeed of your truck traveling it would need to be hard-coated. I'm not familiar with foam hard-coating products but they are out there. Good luck!

Your work is amazing. You are very talented and produce great videos. How do you store these huge props? I live in Canada and would have to contend with snow and rain. Building a 7 foot prop would be difficult to store for 363 days of the year.
@Scaryladyvideos
@Scaryladyvideos 5 лет назад
Thank you :) I stored these props in the unfinished basement. But, it did present a challenge as the props had to be designed to be carried up stairs that changed directions. Beloved was the worst to get up the stairs followed by the Demon Horse. He was designed with a removable head.

I noticed that the Hell hound prop was built a little different from this one, this one is more hollow inside whereas Hell hound is more solid. How do you know or decide when to use on method over the other? Thank you!
@Scaryladyvideos
@Scaryladyvideos 10 лет назад
Great question: It's more of a budgetary decision. Using solid foam is easier to carve but more expensive (more foam). Plus - wanted to try carving down rather than building up to see which I liked better. I like carving down a lot better. Another point: th Demon Horse needed to be lit from within and thought it would be easier to do it with a hollow inside. But, building the PVC frame was a pain. So, they are both valid ways of doing it I guess it's your decision on what would be needed.

I am brainstorming ideas from building a custom vehicle fairing. Many people do fiberglassing, but I don't have the space to do such a process, so I am looking into alternatives. I like the idea of using this method, but how heavy does the Drylok with cheesecloth make the sculpture. How durable is it from impact. Does just the cloth dipped in cheesecloth alone hold up to damage?
@Scaryladyvideos
@Scaryladyvideos 7 лет назад
The Drylok and cheesecloth doesn't make it that heavy at all. As for impact durability I can't attest to that because I never wacked it hard enough to see how tough it would be. But, I'd say it could take a pretty good hit. Between the toughness of pink foam, the cheesecloth creating a netting with that very tough Drylok I'd say you are looking very good. Also check out this company which has been developing a lot of foam hard coating products. Many haunters are now starting to use them: www.smooth-on.com/

I watched your vid on what is the best glue and now I'm hooked on your vids. You're an amazing artist mam! There was a young man watching his grandpa whittling on a block of wood...he asks "whatcha doin?". Grandpa says "I whittling a horse!". The young man says "how ya gonna do that?"...grandpa says "I'm gonna take this block of wood and take everything off it that doesn't look like a horse!"...... I don't think it can be put any better than that. Take off too much or too little and you don't get a "horse". The moral of the story is you have to know where to start and WHEN to stop! I fix things....I can fix pretty much anything...and I LOVE doing that. But I'm not creative in any way. I admire people like you AND my cute little wife. Both of you have more creativity in your little fingers than I'll EVER have in my whole body. God Bless you mam...and thank you so much for sharing your art with all of us! I also play guitar....poorly...hehe...62 year old rocker....but because of youtube....I actually fake it pretty well...hehe Have a wonderful day mam and thanks VERY VERY much! BTW...I shared your vids with my wife and she's amazed by your work! One more thing....because I'll be taking the foam out of what I'm going to sculpt to build a cab on my snowmobile I'll be gluing the pieces together but only in spots so I won't have to deal with shaping and sanding where the glue line would be. I have a plan! And you helped me with that plan! I'm going to build a frame of wood with a hot glue gun and then cover it with foam and shape the outside for body work. Then heat plexiglass and shape it for windshield and sideglass. I'm really looking forward to messing with it......
@Scaryladyvideos
@Scaryladyvideos 6 лет назад
Wow, well thank you for those wonderful compliments. This has made my morning :) That phrase "Take away what doesn't look like a horse" is what finally had me understanding sculpting. Once you grasp it - you understand that sculpting is more of a process. You don't start out with carving a foot and then a head. It's constantly doing sweeps over your entire project taking a little bit off each time. Then, yes... the key is then knowing when to stop. :)

You mention foam glue and also Gorilla Glue. I have not been able to find "foam glue" in the stores here, except a styrofoam craft glue in a spraycan, which is extremely expensive. What are you using to glue your large pieces together to make them one piece before you carve and refine? Thanks!

See my other video called StyroWars where I talk about what I learned about using different glues. In the end I like using PL300 which is a caulk glue you get in the caulk section of Home Depot/Lowe's for area's that I can glue where air will get to it (seams, etc.) and Glidden Gripper for other areas when air doesn't easily get there. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rnOegaOKu38.html

What is "drylock" mentioned in this video and you also used a product that looks like white or grey paint to coat your landscape fabric. What exactly did you use and where did you buy both prodcucts. Thank you in advance/
@Scaryladyvideos
@Scaryladyvideos 9 лет назад
+Mary Ann Budenske Drylok was used for both applications. Drylok is a basement waterproofing paint. I like it because it dries very strong and in combination with the cheesecloth made a very strong shell. I likened it to fiberglassing but without all the extras chemicals. Be sure to look for the latex version of Drylok. The other kind has solvents in it that will eat the foam. Oh, and the gray appearance was because I grabbed the gray tinted version. But some store only carry it in white.

I made this back in 2011 and there wasn't many options. I ended up using an incandescent red rope light. Would have rather used LED but that wasn't around much. I used the rope version because the light was also coming out of the scars on his neck, ribs and hooves. Here is a picture of how the rope was laced through the insides of the horse: www.halloweenforum.com/members/terra-albums-tutorial-build-outdoor-monster-props-picture72345-snake-rope-lighting-areas-you-want-light-show-your-monster-i-suggest-using-led-should-cooler-regular-rope-lighting-gets-little-hot-under-foam-ive-noticed.jpg

Thank you for the quick response....but I meant...what do you make the eye socket out of?
