Thanks for stopping by as we begin the build review of the Magic Factory F4U-1A in 1/48 Scale. Today we're building up the cockpit and starting on the fuselage. We'll also be using the Quinta Studio 3D instrument panels and seat details. Everything was graciously provided by our sponsor Hobbynut Models - be sure to check them out at this link:

Hi John, Great build so far, that cockpit looks great. Look forward to the other parts and love the music 😀👍🏻 Jason 🇬🇧

Hi Jason- thank you very much! So far the kit has been great with very few issues. Appreciate you watching and I'll have more soon.

Great to see you building this. John I built both of mine wings extended. You just cut the folded wing braces and reposition them as extended and then the folded wing parts mate up perfectly as extended wings. You just have to fill in a few tiny doors that are part of the folding wing mechanism. It’s an easy modification if you don’t want a folded wing version.

Hi John- if anyone would come up with a solution to the folded wing issue, I knew you would! I will have to look at that for the -2. Appreciate you watching, and thanks for that Idea!

@@MisterGsWorkbench I can’t take the credit! I got the idea from an article on modeling madness by Tom cleaver!

Wish I had thought of that. The folded wings make the kit “fragile”. I actually had busted off one of the braces from handling, but managed to reattach. I left the wings themselves off till the very end.

Great video John. Really enjoyed the discussion on using masks for the national insignias. You’ve given me the courage to try doing this.

I’m working on the 2nd plane now. It’s a nice kit, but no tamiya. I made a couple of goofs on the fuselage and ended up using that fuselage for the folded wings version. The 2nd fuselage is complete and I have been working on the wings this weekend. I don’t care for the order of assembly - I always leave the landing gear to the end to keep from busting off from handling. Magic Factory would have you attach the landing gear before you even attach the wings to the fuselage - dumb. Overall decent kit(s) and certainly better than the Academy F4U- kit I recently built.

I try to do the same thing- leave the gear off as late as possible. When I dig into the second one I'll probably change up the order of assembly based on what I've learned from this one. Thanks for the feedback and as always thanks for your support!

Worthy of noting that the US Navy did not clear the Corsair for carrier duties until the Royal Navy showed them how to land them safely on RN Carriers only 2/3 (or less) the size of the US Fleet carriers. (The RN had immediately seen the issue and devised a work-around with the landing proceedure and signals, which the US Navy hastily adopted. A modernised variant is still used as a standby proceedure, today AFAIK.) Personally I think the Magic factory kit practically obsoletes the 30 year old Tamiya Corsair kit, having better details, a 99% complete R2800 in the cowling, not a 1 piece bulkhead mount engine and the cockpit almost does not need AM details, apart from Harness. IF you look at the sprues there is a spare set of inboard flaps with the mounting step cut out already, not a scribed panel. This strongly hints that an F4U-1D (and later) marks will follow as the step cutout was introduced with the D Model and found on all Corsairs after that _4,-5, etc.

Thanks for the background on the carrier landings- I had read it recently as well. I was surprised that for all of the detail provided the engine wasn't complete with only partial exhausts inside the cowling. Appreciate your input and thanks for watching!

I wish you could pick this up as a single kit. I’m not a cheapskate, but I haven’t seen the kit in any of my LHS’s for under $150.00, and I’m not a fan of a mandatory folded wing.
@MisterGsWorkbench

Agreed Kevin - I think they'd sell a ton more if they were available as individual kits. The forced folded wing is a mystery to me - seems like they could have incorporated the wing stuff onto one sprue and offered both. Thanks for watching!

I saw another review where the builder cut the folded wing spar and managed to build it with wings extended.

@@jayser2002 yes there is a way to do it that has come to my attention and I'll discuss that in the episode for the wings. Good catch!

Does anyone still use Testors products? It's been over 20 years and I want to try to create something that's new to me. I've noticed a different brand of glue and paint now with modelers, however. Can someone break it down for me?
@MisterGsWorkbench
@MisterGsWorkbench 3 дня назад
@@jessewilliams1422 your paint choices are abundant- depends on whether you want acrylic or enamel paints. It also depends on whether you're using an airbrush or painting by brush. As for glues, again you've got a ton of choices. If you can narrow down what you're looking to do I'm sure we can figure things out.

@@MisterGsWorkbench Ive always done military aircraft of the European theatre WW2. GF was a waist gunner B-17, but my dad is a navy man and wanted to do this Corsair kit with the pre cut panels and finer details, they had just started the fine detail kits when I was younger and always wanted to do a piece. This kit seems perfect to dive into.
