In this episode of "The Home Tips Show," I'll guide you step-by-step on how to build your own *fenced-in raised garden bed* complete with a handy entry gate. This setup will make planting, weeding, and harvesting your vegetables a breeze. I'll cover all the tools and materials you'll need, and walk you through the process to create this beautiful and functional addition to your outdoor space. The video is packed with helpful tips, and it moves fast so buckle up!
Materials Needed from Home Depot:
- 6 2x6 8' Treated Lumber ($7.18 ea.)
- 4 4x4 6' Treated Lumber ($8.18 ea.)
- 8 pieces of 2x2 8' Treated Lumber ($4.78 ea.)
- 2 bags of Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix (80 lbs, 1/2 bag per 4x4 post) ($5.98 ea)
- 1 roll of 1/4 in. Mesh x 2 ft. x 25 ft. 23-Gauge Galvanized Steel Hardware Cloth ($61.38)
- 1 box of 1/2" staples for staple gun ($13.97)
- 1 box of **1 1/4" decking screws ($10.97)
- 1 box of 2" decking screws ($10.97)
- 1 box of 2 1/2" decking screws ($13.97)
- 1 box of 3" decking screws ($13.97)
- 1 general purpose saws-all blade ($3.67)
- 15-20 bags of Kellogg Garden Organics Raised Bed Soil (2 cu. ft. ea.) ($9.97 per bag)
- 1 Gate Latch Galvanized ($7.93)
- 2 T-Hinges (4" Zinc) ($0.67 each)
- 1 pack of Corner braces (Galvanized, 4 pack, $9.97)
- 1 box (1000 count) Arrow 1/2 T50 staples for staple gun
PRO TIP: IF you have the budget, purchase 5-6 bags of organic real black dirt soil (you can get from Home Depot) and mix it in with the Kellogg raised bed mix. Also, purchase a bag or two of Worm Castings and mix that into your soil mix. Worm castings improve soil structure and enhance its ability to retain moisture, which is crucial for plant health. Rich in nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, worm castings provide a slow-release fertilizer that promotes vigorous plant growth. They also help suppress plant diseases and pests due to the beneficial microorganisms they contain. Additionally, worm castings improve seed germination, root growth, and overall plant resilience.
Tools I Purchased from Home Depot:
- DeWalt Staple Gun ($25.97)
- 47 in. Wood Handle Steel Post Hole Digger ($39.95) - *Note:* This post hole digger is flimsy and poorly reviewed on Homedepot.com. It will suffice for this project if used gently, but for more durability, consider a higher-quality digger in the $60-$100 range.
Tools Needed:
Standard shovel
Post hole digger
Dewalt Sawzall or basic manual hand saw
Standard square and level (at least 3ft)
Dewalt or similar cordless drill/screwdriver with necessary bits
Dewalt or similar Sawzall (Ryobi recommended for DIYers)
Tape measure (at least 16ft)
Dewalt Stapler with T50 size 1/2-inch staples
Drill bits and various other bits
Standard or Framing Hammer
Side wire cutters
Construction Pencil
Quality Extension Cord (end lighted preferred)
Safety Glasses (sun blocking if working in bright sun)
Optional: gloves, speed square, tool belt
