We had a request through for an 8020 build based on the popular SIM LAB P1 design. The design has been upgraded to accommodate both a standard seat and the Next Level V3 motion platform.
In the video, we'll take you through the design features in MAY-CAD and a life-size scale model in VR to prototype the design.
As with all DIY builds, there are big savings to be made and you'll save a bundle with our P1 style build too.

This is gold! I'm actually going to build this off of your spec sheet. My only question is will this work with Sim Labs peripherals like their triple monitor bracket or steering panel, shift panel etc? And I dont have next level V3. Would this be an issue in terms of steering height? Thanks !
@SimRacingCorner
@SimRacingCorner 5 лет назад
Hi there, the height is fine as the seat rails change position depending on if you're using the NLV3 or just a seat. The SIM-LAB peripherals will not fit this design as width has been altered for the NLV3 fitting. You can easily adjust the width on the plans. Check against the SIM-LAB website as they measurements for the peripherals you've mentioned.

@TJRSIM

Great vid man! You're really talented. I'm thinking of the P1 for my NLR V3 as well. I'm concerned that when the seat moves to (in your case) the left that it will hit the side tubing.
@SimRacingCorner
@SimRacingCorner 5 лет назад
Cheers for that! I've come across a few examples of the P1 used with the NLV3 now and it appears to work fine without any collisions when moving. The only problem is working out a custom mounting solution, which I've solved with this DIY build. Also if you download the project files, you can check it out closely yourself. As you already the NLV3 you'll be able to judge if there's sufficient space around the platform.

Thanks for the vid, I want to do something like this but it looks like the only stuff I can get locally has 10mm slots. Does that matter? I assume I can just use your plans but I would just have to get 10mm brackets/bolts?

Certainly 10 slot profile would work just the same with this build.

@SimRacingCorner

Hi there, I did start looking into designing a triple monitor stand. I priced up some parts and found it wasn't worth it. The SIM-LAB option is about the same price as a DIY project, so that makes more sense.

How do I go about doing pedal tilt with the aluminium profile if I’m using thrustmaster load cell pedals? Thanks for the help!
@SimRacingCorner
@SimRacingCorner 3 года назад
For your Thrustmaster pedals you will need a different style of pedal like on this design, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2830117Y-u8.html. Or integrate something like this www.trakracer.co.uk/product/strengthened-pedal-update-for-rs6-tr8-and-fs3-adjustable-four-way-pedal-mount-including-pedal-plate-and-brackets/
@VishnuRajam4x4

@@SimRacingCorner the RU-vid video that you linked has a flat pedal mounting base. So is it possible to mount to that? In you TLCM review how did you mount the pedals?
@SimRacingCorner
@SimRacingCorner 3 года назад
@@VishnuRajam4x4 The pedal deck in the other video can be tilted. Basically, it's the same design cockpit that I'm using right now. T-LCM pedals are mounted on the Trak Racer plate video I showed you. In the review I'm using this adaptor. shop.thrustmaster.com/fr_fr/t-lcm-cockpit-adaptor.html. But I would recommend drilling proper holes.

@acmarston 4 года назад
Can I make this exactly like the P1? How much wider would I have to adjust it to to make it the exact same width as the original P1? And I was considering getting the front mounting bracket set from Sim Labs, so should I just remove the 40x120 across the top?
@SimRacingCorner
@SimRacingCorner 4 года назад
The SimLab front mounting bracket is 600mm (on their website), so you will need to adjust my design accordingly. Which is easy enough to do in the cad software.
@acmarston
@acmarston 4 года назад
@@SimRacingCorner Okay. Thanks.
@acmarston
@acmarston 4 года назад
@@SimRacingCorner The horizontal extrusions for the base according to the sim labs pdf are 500mm in length. Plus 80mm for the widths of the 1400mm extrusions for the other part of the base comes to a total width between the uprights of 580mm, which isn't wide enough for that front mounting bracket which is 600mm. What is it on the P1 that widens it out 20mm more? Is it those sandwich plates? If so, would you have to buy those sandwich plates from Sim Labs or can you buy them anywhere?
@acmarston
@acmarston 4 года назад
@@SimRacingCorner Maybe instead of using the sandwich plates, I could just add 20mm more onto the extrusion length that I buy?
@LeonardoMarchese
@LeonardoMarchese 4 года назад
@@acmarston You could do it but then if you'd like to buy the P1 Upgrade (Pedal Plate accessory) it won't fit and you will need some spacer... The pedal plate is 470 mm wide + 15mm x2 lateral plates = 500mm

Not from scratch. But I've modded my 8020 sim cockpit quite substantially over the years so I'm quite experienced with this material. If I had a need too I'd have no issue custom building one from the ground up. It's not a complicated material to work with, and the design software is easy to understand.

Export the model out of May CAD > convert in FreeCAD > Import into MasterpieceVR. Sorry I can't remember the export file format for each step, it's been a long while ago. But basically, you're exporting the model out of May CAD, so it's can be read by FreeCAD. Then use FreeCAD convert it into an STL model that MasterpieceVR can import.
