I really like the attention and detail of your builds. It’s nice to see craftsmanship and someone who takes pride in their work. I’m starting a deck soon and taking a lot of your points and suggestions and incorporating into my neck build. Never knew about applying the waterproof membrane behind the skirt boards. My last so called carpenter t did none of that on my patio stairs.

And here I am thinking I’m the only one that uses clamps like that …kept thinking maybe I’m too picky. It’s great to see somebody else uses them ! I use bar clamps all over the place when I’m building decks…especially, for securing posts and shimming them before attaching .They have so many great uses !

My deck is 15X60 foot on one level and 1000 square foot on the other two lower decks. They did ended up not getting paid because they got the measurements wrong and ordered double the material order. Can't swear to it but I think they had planned on taking off with the half not used. They had to pay for returns etc..

Just curious where you are located - I had done my stair fascia like you showed in MN and it was not a good idea - looked great but the mn weather wrecked it in a couple years. Water would sit in the corners and freeze busting the skirt board off (And rotting the attached stringer which was treated in about 6 years). I since rebuilt it with the skirt cut along the stringer and a picture frame on the treads covering the place where the fascia meets the stringer hopefully eliminating the issue. MN winters are rough on construction

I hate open miters myself! So annoying! My thoughts are that the miter is only one joint open at that corner rather than two butt joints opening within 6" of that corner. My coworker and I go back and forth about this! I've heard you speak of this in the past and can't wait for your final decision! We generally go with picture framing with a 3/4 nosing. For the life of me, I can't get him to go with flush on top fascia using 5/4 with the 1/2 below it for the stepped look. Hes so set in his ways! My coworker insists on mitering his picture frame boards as well, and they look great for a minute (i mean that literally), and within no time at all they open and look horrible. We did do mitered drink rails and managed to glue and pocket hole most of the miters which seemed to work well but was extremely difficult to manage without accidental breakage of the Azek boards ends at the joints in the process. We also started ripping the smooth linear edge off of scrap solid Azek and gluing and pin nailing to end grain in some cases, rather than a mitered return. Gotta try different things in my book!

The decking companies owe you a big fat check for getting people through the hell of working with this shit! You keep people trying to do this! They absolutely should be paying you!!! ( if they don’t) You guys have it worked out very well.. most guys would sink this garbage to the bottom of the ocean in a Newyork minute! You manage to make it look good.. what a struggle though… & when it’s done it looks nice but probably for a short time! If you use the deck on a hot day your kids will Scald their bare feet ! Don’t even try to sit on a bench made of this “ stuff” ouch You do a great job.. when I invent a better composite I’ll get you to try it out! God I hate working on decks anymore…

The nosing on treads, believe it or not, has a code minimum and maximum of how far the nosing projects over the next stair. Nosing's are required to overhang a minimum of ¾-in. to a maximum of 1-¼-in. Also, the maximum nosing radius cannot exceed 9/16 of an inch. Maybe it is not required where you are but if it were your threads would not pass inspection. Mike T

Why not just determine two angles: one for the top of the stairs (the deck surface vs the stair angle) and divide that in half for a clean miter and finish at the top and the second angle at the bottom of the stairs is the stair angle vs the riser and miter that angle and voilà… you have you both angles and a clean join at both top and bottom.

I really do not like bringing fascia to the height level of deck boards. I would rather keep it under the boards. My opinion....the last thing you want is for people to keep stepping on those fascia boards, as they will eventually sag below the deck board height. I always keep fascia under the deck boards. On stairways, you absolutely have to keep the stringer fascia under the tread boards, or you will see the notched cuts around the stairs. Everyone makes their choices....but |I think it's a mistake. I install fascia first, and then install picture frame deck boards...face-screwed...and then install the runs of deck boards.
