In this video I demonstrate the proof of concept of a 100% Virtual CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure version 1.1 home lab. The Cisco Virtual Catalyst 9K switch image is a beta release that we have running in EVENG for the purpose of this demonstration.

It's great that all the components become available as virtual, but the ressources are so massive, even the cat9k images require 32GB or ram, and then you also have to run the dnac appliance and the ise engine, so it does become expensive to run unless they modify it.

Great Video. Thanks for the details. Question Please: does the virtual DNA-C on ESXi needs any license to build SDA fabric? I'm asking becasue when I tried to create virtual networks or add devices to a Fabric Site, I do not see these options when I click on the menu on the upper-left corner then choose Provsion.

Hey Terry, love this channel and your videos. Outstanding work here. Thank you for the time and energy putting this together for the community. Question for you on the Cat9Kv's; do you see high latency on the links? The EVE-NG Pro default template for these images is Qemu 5.2 w/ virtio-pci NIC's, and I have mine up and running fine, but latency is very high, anywhere from 100-200 ms. Do you see the same in your environment? I have my c8000v's cabled up to the Cat9kv's but the latency is very high.

not even a normal Smart account is needed for DNA to be deployed and function as intended especially after the last update (CCIE v1.1)
@TerryVinsonCCIEx2
@TerryVinsonCCIEx2 Год назад
Well if you want a legal copy of the software you need an entitlement which typically requires a smartnet account, however to your point the only thing "required" if you have the images or software to deploy a DNA-Center Appliance is a CCO account for updates and image information. Additionally, DNA Center requirements have no correlation to any version of the CCIE EI exam so v1.0 and v1.1 have nothing to do with DNAC features, licensing or registration.

Hi Terry, from what I know the only way to have the image cat9kv-prd-17.10.01prd7.qcow2 is if you have CML 2.5 Version. At the moment is not at Cisco Software Download Center. Also the Equipment and Software List for EI v1.1, for switches has physical C9300 with IOS XE 17.9. Do you believe when Cisco release the C9kV with IOS XE 17.10 it will be sufficient for studying or we still need the physical devices?
@TerryVinsonCCIEx2
@TerryVinsonCCIEx2 Год назад
I expect that the at or near the time for Cisco LIve Cisco will announce a more stable version of the cat9v for study. I have several iterations of the image that I have worked with since November of Last Year, the get more and more stable. With this image I have an issue of CDP just not working. Show commands indicate that its on and running on interfaces but the devices never see neighbors. I pulled the images from CML2.5 and run them inside EVENG. I run at 24GB and 8 CPUs per instance and they seem pretty stable (not perfect) but usable. Additionally, I have had an issue where the images dumps default routes learned via routing protocols. FYI.

@TerryVinsonCCIEx2
@TerryVinsonCCIEx2 Год назад
I would go to 512 GB RAM, and at least 3TB SSD. The DNAC will take 256GB RAM and 62 CPUs if you run a virtual DNAC using the ISO, or 32 and 256GB if you wait for the official Cisco vDNAC. The official vDNAC will make it possible. Tight but possible.

@TerryVinsonCCIEx2 Год назад
Well I have run all versions of DNAC 1.3.x to 2.3.x in virtualization it requires at least 62 vCPU to be stable. I had the same problem using 48 vCPUs where the install would go swimmingly, but 1/2 the docker images would load and the other half would not. In instances running 48 vCPUs i would work great for days but if I reloaded or the power went out it would do the same thing on reload.

@@TerryVinsonCCIEx2 , appreciate you detailing this information. I remember seeing the 44vcpu min requirement but nothing about the issues you can come into. I'll have to build another (3rd) ESXI server with DUAL Xeon's then. Narbik told he personally that he had heard a rumor Cisco is working on a lite version of DNAC for CCIE students but no time frame on that yet. It would be nice to have the ability to segment the dockers/containers, etc on different ESXI host as VM's. Just some kind of relief for the community; kinda leaves a bad taste in the mouth when you can't realistically sit for the CCIE EI lab without this experience.

@@brandonunger1689 Well you can "turn off" many of the docker containers so I have been experimenting (cause I'm tired of waiting for the "real vDNAC" that I keep getting promised). I am trying to find a way to effectively interact the the container level in a way that will allow me to get creative and run only the services necessary for the CCIE EI v1.0 and v1.1 lab. The issue thus far has been stability. Its a constant effort during my "down time". I agree that its is less than ideal, but I am pleased to to see motion in the direction of being able to virtualize the platforms and devices. I'm trying to look at all options, and determine what can be done in emulation to save guys money and time when it comes to real gear.
