To build this bass I started out with this mod bass kit from the fretwire.com, if you haven’t watched it, check out my full review of this kit. And if you decide to order a kit from the fretwire.com don’t forget to use coupon code GUNSNGTRS to save $10 on your order.
Okay let’s get started with this build.
The very first thing I did to this kit was sand down the fret ends with some 320 grit sandpaper. If you recall from my review, those fret ends were really rough and cut up my hand pretty good when I was playing. While I was at it, knowing that I was going to replace the musicman style bridge, I filled all the holes left from it and sanded down the body. Then I leveled and crowned all the frets. I originally thought I might get away with just a fret touch up, but once I started marking all the uneven spaces I quickly realized that this neck just needed to be releveled and start over from square one. If you don’t know how to level and crown your fretboard, check out my video on how to make your own tools, in that video I not only show you how to make the tools necessary for the job, but also how to use them.
For the stain I used Cabot’s tinted grey (replace with actual name). Now I had already glued the neck and body together, but I wanted to leave the back of the neck natural, so I taped it off really good before applying the stain. I actually like it all one color. Not learning my lesson with the tape, I decided to add some dimension by using a little Black rit dye to make it more of a grey burst effect. Luckily this time the tape did its job. . Then using a file I carefully scraped the stain and dye off of the binding for a good clean look. Last thing for the finish, I added my favorite top coat, tung oil. Lots of people recommend that I try different finishes...lots of people don’t know how awesome tung oil is...just sayin...
Okay now it’s time to wire this thing up.
Firstly, huge shoutout to Nikola of nikocarbonworks.com for sending me this awesome carbon fiber pickguard and truss rod cover. If you guys want a carbon fiber pickguard or truss rod cover, niko is your man. Tell him Dan from guns and guitars sent you, he’ll hook you up. For pickups I chose a bartolini rickenbacker replacement neck pickup, and for the bridge I used a Seymour Duncan quarter pound jazz pickup. I bought these pickups used on reverb for $150 total for both. I changed up the wiring too and hot rodded it a bit. I replaced the pickup selector switch with a blend/balance pot, mostly because this quarter pounder is way hotter than the bartolini, so this allows me more control to blend them together better. The other two knobs are a master volume and master tone. And These two switches...well you’ll just have to keep watching to see what they do. I guarantee it’s not what you expect. But total I spent about $15 on the pots and switches and output jack to upgrade the wiring.

Guns and Guitars I love your videos, man. The "Build your dream bass video" you did, you casually mention something that totally solved a problem I spent a year trying to figure out. The bass kept making a buzzing sound, and I rewired it a ton of times, replaced parts, etc. It was the shielding touching a screw that it shouldn't have been touching. I'm no luthier (at all), but it was a hobby of mine to build custom guitars and basses. I'd find a nice body on eBay, then match it with a neck and go piece by piece from there. Usually got some pretty nice builds for around $100-$150.

I've only seen one other Ric copy kit, and it was a bolt on. Pretty cool to find a set neck Ric kit. I only wish the body wood had a maple top, even if that would cost more, so a translucent finish would look much nicer. Even so, I may be ordering one, when they have them again (out of stock as of 12/30/17). I would probably do a vintage white gloss lacquer finish, that I think would look great. Pretty cool kit for the money!

+Guns and Guitars Oh man...tutorials on wiring tricks like this one and I bet that you've got many others for bass and guitars. Man, I have a hard time with all the values involved in electronical parts and features. Phased or unphased pickups...duh?...what? I've heard about it but I still have to really understand it. And there's also splitting humbuckers into single coils but keeping them noiseless. I don't know how many tutorials I would need to check out to finally get a good grasp on electronics. Great outcome with your project by the way. Sounds good and I really like the finish. Color is hard on gray out of 50 shades or what?

The crossover is like the vintage tone circuit on new Rics. It just puts a small (.0047 on an actual ric) capacitor in series with the bridge pickup. Joe Gore has a tutorial either on tone fiend or guitar player called "Three Must Try Wiring Mods" that shows how to do it.

My dude, that looks soooo cool. I'm going to get into building a bass like that for myself. I was already inspired by your Rickenbacker build kit video, but I felt like it didn't look all that good, and the sound wasn't too good either. This video just blew the other one away! Bought myself a second hand Squier P-bass to learn about modding, swapping out components, repainting,... I'm at a point where I feel comfortable to build a bass from scratch (with a build kit of course). The stain looks so cool, I absolutely love it. I'm going to inspire my bass on yours, man. Always wanted a Rickenbacker charcoal gray bass :) PS: Don't wanna be that guy to tell you what to do with your channel, but I would love to see a tutorial video on installing the stereo output circuit you were talking about at the end of the video. Dan, I WAS a Tung oil fan until I ran into an eighty year-old young retired nuclear engineer who turned me on to Danish Oil (okay it too is a Tung oil based product) but it is tinted and blended out into a ready to use oil that is brushed on to soak, then rubbed in with 000 steel wool. You lay on multiple coats until you have both butter soft and a remarkable smooth satin finish (okay, I also use an old scrap of real wool cloth for the finish coat . . .and I ONLY do my rifle stocks and handgun grips in Danish oil from now on out). Expect to spend some quality time with the piece the more "love" and layers you hand rub in will reward you (and when I started building my little guitars, it was a natural and I will tell you it improves the resonance of even the worst wood).

As someone who's held and played a Ric that wasn't set up, but has no guitar building experience, I have 3 questions: 1. What is the best way to wire this kit? 2. Did you change out the strings that came with the kit to better ones? 3. Do you think the stock pickups are as good as another brand like Seymour Duncan?
@GunsandGuitars
@GunsandGuitars 6 лет назад
the stock pickups are not as good as duncans. not even close. wiring is a matter of personal preference, I prefer a blend knob or separate volumes for blending pickups instead of the selector switch, but again, that's personal preference. Usually I do change out the strings, but I realized when I was done with the bass that I didn't have another set on hand, so I actually used the kits strings again. but it would've sounded better with some name brand strings for sure.
@pilummurialis6490

Thanks for the response, I honestly wonder how this kit would sound with a set of hot Seymour Duncan pickups in it, I'm looking at those for the kit I plan to get, as well as light gauge strings, honestly glad I found these, because $4,000 on a real ric is too much for my blood, and making a custom one for 10 times less, is honestly way more rewarding

Could you do a video all about the stereo output? My only thoughts on why it's less common would be cost, and reliability. Simply having two out puts, with the ability to sum to mono mean's less to go wrong, and more standard parts should you need to replace them. Great video man!

+AttitudeCastle yeah...a standard rickenbacker 4003 with Rick o sound is a way more complex circuit with way more that can go wrong...but you could still be right about other manufacturers not doing it. I’ll for sure be posting a tutorial for this later

Dan, I really enjoy your videos. Can I ask where you hail from? I don't hear a hint of accent, so I wonder if you share my California one. I really love this "Cheap kit" then "Trick out the kit" videos, they are very interesting and educational, and also happen to be exactly how I approach guitars. How about a tele kit? How about a DIY pedal or amp kit like BYOC or something?

Sounds like all the before clips were done with tone halfway down with it opened for the after clips. Amazing what some new electronics can do. I remember hating the tone knob on an old guitar until I replaced it with a slightly different value cap.

I had a 1973 Rick 4001 for 35 years, but it was always a little too big for me. But it was so cool- and I was young and adjusted. Enter arthritis, and I just couldn’t play it for more than 20 min without pain. I sold it and am looking for a decent short-scale.

I had a Ric 4003 for a few years (which I changed for a Jag Bass). The changes/set-up you made were always the things that I thought were bit 'lacking' on the Ric: the massive/weirdly-square block/cover for the bridge pickup, and having the pickups sound a bit too 'undefined'/flabby...those pickups sound great! ...also looks amazing. If you haven't done already, you should upload videos on how you did the wiring. Great job, man!

When you did that crossover thing, not only did the bass get a lowend boost but the treble notes sang better as well. It's like the neck pickup was the stage, and the bridge pickup the singer lol. But seriously it's like you mixed the bass with the flip of a switch. I was interested in this concept since I heard of the ric o sound and billy using it on his yamaha. However, I think you handled this a tad more eloquently. GENIUS!

You don’t see your kind of setup in other basses because neither bass players or companies put that much thought into consumer level basses. You have to go custom or high-end basses or a custom built one and guys like me just can’t do that. I bought my Rickenbacker 4001 in’83 for $650. Had I of kept it it would worth a lot more. Gear in the 80’s was so cheap. I want to build or get a bass just like what you built. I’m so big on recording in unique ways that your version of Rick-O-Sound on one input jack would be awesome! Glad I found your channel! I love both guns and guitars!

I think I'll let you have the fretless; I've got my Ibanez SRF705 for that. I'm thinking of doing the 5 string kit with a Hipshot A, EMG PX soapbar for the neck, JX-CS soap for the bridge, the BQC and Graphtek nut.

For the bridge pick up I used a JBE J-STYLE pick up. It has two long curved bars that run parallel to each other instead of coils so there is nothing to line up and it looks sweet. For the neck pick up i went with a Lace Alumitone Razor pick up. These are some amazing and incredible sounding pick ups.

A lot of companies don't use stereo outputs for some reasons: 1. A lot of people are happy with just having a mono output. 2. Hauling around multiple amps to gigs is a pain in the ass. 3. Referring to point 2, having more amps means more points of failure. 4. Most people can coax a great bi-amp sound with signal splitting after the bass output. 5. The .0047 cap gives you the bi-amp sound in mono on Rickenbacker basses. Referring to point 4, you can then split the signal using effects or something of the like. P.S.: I own a Rickenbacker 4001, I have used Ric-O-Sound before. Too many problems to deal with so I just use the mono output. Signal splitting at my floorboard does the job nicely and I only need one amp for my setup.
@GunsandGuitars
@GunsandGuitars 6 лет назад
While I agree with all of your points, it’s just too easy to make it switchable with a dpdt switch and a TRS jack. A total of about $5-7 and you have the option to bi amp or mono at your leisure. As a former professional musician believe me when I say the less gear you have to haul around the better. I typically only brought my bass, a tuner pedal, and a DI to a gig, only brought an amp if the house system didn’t have subs. But even just for recording, it would’ve been great to flip a switch and record both pickups at once.

I have a Rickenbacker 4001 from the mid ‘70s and love it. I viewed the Rickenbacker copy build and like it. The sound has good bass, its smooth and rich even though it lacks that raw Ric sound. That said, back in the '70's I modified my stock Ric to allow for a little more versatility and to get a more smoother sound sort of a combo between the J&K Lado and the highly coveted B.C. Rich basses, and managed to keep that raw Ric sound I love. I installed a series parallel switch and capacitor in and out switch for the treble pickup. Hahaha they do now on the 4003 to warm the treble pickup up and down. I also additionally wrapped the stock t-pick up. You puritans are gonna shit your pants but check this out. I added DiMarzio pre-bass pick ups, middle position. They work very well along side of the hot Ric treble p/up. The sound is insane and because of the series/capacitor switches I could have a ton of sound. I thought your treble pick up was a little close to the bridge for playing purposes, but you can remove the guard and ditch it. Sounds good…!!
