I watched this when i was child and i just saw this and im so happy i can watch it again bc its one of my fav childhood videos :)

I've seen this sandbox/plans several places, but the advantage of this is that it's actually clear how to go about it. Worth noting for anyone considering this: 1) Type of wood-- If you use pine, fir, or anything of the sort, you'll want to seal it very, very, well, and then paint it very, very, well. If you use cedar you can use just a good sealer (there are several excellent brands). If you opt for pressure treated wood, know that it does not take paint terribly well. It's also very heavy-- making opening and closing things up a bit harder. 2) fasteners-- Best to use something meant for exterior work. GRK fasteners are excellent, I use nothing else for outside work. Note that if you're screwing into narrow wood (such as any of the one-by) it's best to pre-drill to help avoid splitting.

Little tip for anybody who’s not familiar with lumber, with the meretricious system a “2x4” is actually 1” 3/4 x 3” 1/2 same goes for any kind 1x6 is actually 3/4” x 5” 1/2

Just took this one as a weekend project, and it came out spectacularly. I've seen some ask, so I'll outline the cost. 6' 2"x8" (3x) ($10 each) ($30 total) (slats for the base) 6' 1"x4" (43x) ($4) each ($172 total) (I used higher grade wood, rather than the junk 1x4s (planks for the base and top) 6' 1"x2" (4x) ($3 each) ($12 total) (to hold the weed mat in place) 6' 2"x4" (2x) ($4 each) ($8 total) 4" strap hinge (6x) ($3.50 each) ($14 total) 2.5" strap hinge (6x) ($3.25 per pair) ($9.75 total) Weed mat - $10 Paint (4 colors, 1qt. each, $10 per qt.) ($40 total) Sand (500lbs) ($2.50 per 50lb bag) ($25 total) Cabinet handles (4x) ($3.75 each) ($15 total) (in the video, he uses rope, but I opted for cabinet handles. Truth be told though, I never attached them because it is easy enough to open without them. So, handles are definitely optional. I also opted against the latches, because there is very little, if any movement from the backrest when the benches are in use. Total cost, $335 with handles...$320 without. Fun project though, and the kids won't get out of it! Could I have found some cheaper alternatives in some areas, sure? Regardless, it was worth it! Good luck!!

Why was this filmed in 1985

I finally finished mine this morning. Filled it with 1800 pounds of sand. I did 6' x 6' x 10.5". I had a bunch of scrap 2x4s to built the base and sidewalls (3 per wall). Then 1x4s for the tops -- 18 of those (3 per segment). 1x2s hold the tarp in place across the top. Pictures can be found at ghosttoa.st
