I love the thought process about the 72 hours to reach help. This is really helpful for me as I definitely wouldn't be able to carry either of my Newfies if they were hurt. Great video, as always!

I've looked into those dog harnesses too, but with my height and Remy's size, I'd only be able to walk maybe a mile or 2 and need to leave my pack. So best off either trying to walk out to town or just wait for help (I have a Zoleo satellite thingy).

I have recently added a K9 Tourniquet to Gus's kit. If he was to cut an artery in his leg, wrapping it would do no good, and you could not apply pressure and hike out as well.

That's useful, thank you. Particularly on the hiking supplies. I have not seen Sam splints before. I have changed my philosophy on everyday first aid kits after my Nova stood on a piece of glass or something sharp about 1 km from home and severed two arteries and a tendon. It took three big wound dressings and 3 bandages to slow it enough that I could get her home to my bigger kit and then on to the vet who saved her. She is fine now, but I thought I was going to lose her, it was horror film bleeding, literally just flowing out of her. For me, the every day carry first aid kit is mostly all about trauma and just having the kit I need on-hand to get them home or back to the car where I have more supplies. If I had to choose between wipes and a tourniquet, its a tourniquet every time now! Like you, I have a bigger kit for longer walks and multi-day trips.

Oh no! I think the things we add to our kit are definitely based on experience, which is why I always have the stretchy bandage and Endosorb with Remy.

We don’t back pack but we go camping and do day hikes while we are camping. So it’s kinda a modified version on of back packing

I definitely love to camp and hike. Also, easier with dogs and you can bring more luxury items.

One thing I would add is a muzzle. You never know how an injured dog will react. I know you can use a gauze roll or other bandage in a pinch, but why waste product? Thanks for the video!

Definitely a good tip and you can get pretty simple ones for that purpose.

Hi guys! Buddy and I are headed to SC in a couple weeks so was going back through to rewatch your first aid kit video. Since this video is a year old, we were wondering if you have/would make any changes/updates to your your's and Remi's kits? 🚶‍♀️🐾🐕‍🦺🏕️🥾 Megan and Buddy

The only thing I might add is a small light scissors! I had to do paw care on the Colorado Trail and used up all the gauze roll and adhesive bandage so bought more in town. We were hiking 20 mi/day though. But I did have a small mini Swiss Army knife to cut the gauze, it just took forever. So a small kids one works fine. Also make sure your human first aid kit has a large safety pin. Mine did, and was extremely helpful in getting sandy pebbles from cracks in his paw pad. I also did use the green goo for minor cuts and scrapes!

Excellent video! However, you are probably carrying a human first aid kit, so just add to it. Instead of making a separate animal kit
@GIRLplusDOGAdventures
@GIRLplusDOGAdventures 2 года назад
That’s what I do basically. I like to keep it separate though so Remy can carry it and I can grab and go when I hike with him. And also easier to find his things if I just need paw repair instead of sifting around. Of course, all personal preference
