Hey guys, just wanted to show you my latest little project, my motorcycle carrier for the back of my truck. I get tired of trying to get the bikes in and out of the bed on my truck. even though I don't have a big truck, it's still a pain, and I usually have to ask someone to help me, which usually ends up being my wife. She doesn't like to do it because she's worried about the bike falling over, and I don't blame her for that.
So I finally did what I've been planning on doing for a couple years now, building a one man only carrier. I'm so glad I did build it, it only took a few hours to do, and it works perfectly. I've already taken the bike on a two hour drive for my trackday with no issues.
If you have any questions at all on how I built it, let me know in the comments and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
As always, thanks for watching!
Here is a list of the most commonly used tools on my channel, I'm only listing actual tools that I have been using for years and that I have a proven track record with. I've been a certified dealer tech for over a decade, and I use these tools day in and day out. The camera and microphone you can see and hear their quality in every video. Obviously if you purchase a tool using one of these affiliate links I'll get a small commission on it and every little bit helps me to continue generating more content! Thank you guys so much for watching and interacting!

Great design. The only thing I'd change would be to load from the right side. That would make it easier to kick the jack down once I unload the bike. Also I wouldn't have to unload into the street, but into the sidewalk, if i have 2.
@ReignitedAuto
@ReignitedAuto 5 лет назад
Both solid points. I mainly built it on that side because most motorcycles I've owned have the exhaust on the right side and I didn't want to worry about smacking the exhaust on my tailgate. But realistically I'm sure it would be fine on either side.

Much better than the old bumper carrier I used back when I was a teenager hauling my Yamaha DT250 on my 1979 Lincoln's bumper. These carriers have gotten much safer!

Nice. I can’t see why the bike stands there by itself just because the front wheel is between the stops. But it obviously does. Good work. I love making stuff with my welder.

Good job dude. I just have one suggestion. on the tube that goes into the hitch I would weld some bracing there. like the black widow motorcycle carrier. That way there will be less stress on those welds when you're driving. It would give me just a little bit more peace of mind when I'm driving with the bike on there. Just think about it bro because if that thing fails while you're driving down the highway and someone gets killed there's no one to blame because you made it. I'm always thinking about the what if. You know how people are these days looking for a quick dollar from someone else's pocket.
@ReignitedAuto
@ReignitedAuto 4 года назад
For sure, I actually feel the same way. I'm working on version 2 of this design now, hoping to incorporate more bracing there somehow. I will say that the primary tube that connects to the hitch is .25" wall tubing, and after three years and countless uses, there is no deflection or deformation of the tube that I can tell. Still, there's always room for improvement!

Biggest problem I can see is it loads from the drivers side of the vehicle. Which means when you park at the side of the road you will have to set your ramp in traffic and push your bike up the ramp while be in the middle of the street and oncoming traffic. This works in a large empty parking lot but in town , at the beach or in any public venue it will create problems for you.
@ReignitedAuto
@ReignitedAuto 5 лет назад
declan duffy For sure I hear what you are saying. I’ve been using this thing for almost two years now, and the situation doesn’t come up very often where you are loading in the street, but it does happen from time to time. My thinking when building it was that the exhaust on almost all sport bikes is on the right side so I wanted that side of the motorcycle facing outward so there wouldn’t be any clearance issues with the tail gate. It’s also been pointed out since by other viewers that I’m more comfortable loading from this side since I’m left handed 😄

I like the front wheel stopper and locking flip-gadget. I might add that to the rack I built using steel tube and aluminum U-channel. I bought twice the length of channel, so half became the ramp. I store the ramp by wing-nut fastening it (with lock washers!) parallel to and against the inside of the man track. Also, I added lights below the track, with some extra U-channel as housings around the lights. Bikes often block the vehicle's lights, and i didn't eever want to have that discussion with the Serve and Protect people.
@ReignitedAuto

Good call, it was always my intention to add some lights along the bottom of the rack for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

Very impressive. I bought a black widow for around $450. I like your longer ramp and your idea of cotter pins on the bolts holding the “flipper” wheel chock-superior to my store-bought. I’m a smaller dude however and getting the bike safely up the ramp is a real adventure (someday you’ll be old too, son). I’m considering mounting a winch. Winches are cheap. Only problem is having a place to mount it, power it, and run a pulley out front. That would be the bomb.

@@ReignitedAuto Be careful with the drop as pulling in and of driveways or parking lot entrances with the carrier so far behind the rear axle you may end up dragging. May want to put some small wheels like you see on some low slung motorhomes on the rear of the rack to safeguard against it. Actually unless the bike is broken down why not start it and put it in first gear and walk beside it and let it pull its own self up the ramp and onto the carrier? I have always put my bike in gear after loading even if manually loading to help maintain the bike in position on the carrier as a safety precaution. Actually another reason to load from the passenger side of the vehicle as then the gearshift and the kickstand will be on the side of the bike you are guiding it onto the carrier from. I have one of the regular harbor freight hitch carriers and have loaded a KLR650 up using that method although that in my opinion is pushing it weight wise for a receiver hitch carrier regardless of what it is made from. All that weight is still technically bouncing up and down on one 2" piece of square tubing being held in by a single hitch pin! My opinion if you are going to be carrying a bike that weighs more than about 350 lbs regularly I would get two of the step bumper receivers and weld up some brackets to mount them to the vehicles frame rails to make the carrier have 3 mounting points to better distribute and carry the weight more evenly across the entire carrier and also to eliminate the stress and any sway from side to side movement which only using the single center hitch attaching point is subjected too.

How's the weld holding the platform to the 2" tubing holding up and did you end up reinforcing it at all? Also did you do anything to tighten up the tubing to receiver connection slop?

If buy that in a heartbeat! Have you thought of making a few & selling them? I’m in the market for my ZX6R stunt bike. Before I buy one, I would like to know if your willing to make one & sell it. I would be willing to pick it up..I’m in the Midwest. Give me your thoughts. Serious buyer..

would it not be safer using a trailer ?
@ReignitedAuto

Generally yes it's easier to load using a trailer. This is just an alternate option for someone who doesn't want to buy a trailer or doesn't have room to store one.

@@ReignitedAuto With that kind of heavy bike i would run a load chain or a 5000 lb rated strap to the hitch mounts in case something fails.

@@BIKEMAN21 Extra precautions are never a bad idea. I've been using this carrier for three years now, and it's been my favorite thing I've ever made. Super useful!
