I need a planishing hammer to shape metal. In this video I build one from scratch. With the exception of some pipe fittings, I used material and off cuts that I already had in the shop.

been watching you for a while and love the content, I owned a bodyshop restoring classic british cars for 30 years. I got my dad back in the U.K with a 1964 2600 Alfa Romeo spider that he wants me to fix up, most of the rear end is missing and been looking at bead rollers etc and when i saw the price of these hammers i thought of using an air chisel, you just made a great tool my friend!..... and chance of showing the angles and lengths of the steel frame work so i could copy your amazing creation 🍻👍💪

They crazy thing about the current world is that i could buy an entire planishing hammer with all the trimmings for LESS money than i’d have to pay for a local machinist to make JUST one or two of those dies you got made. No man, can't be! A cheap planishing hammer goes for around $250 -300, the better ones $1000 upwards. What kind of rates are they charging? I'm sure you'd be able to buy a set of dies online in your part of the world

@@ratrodsafrica cheap hammer with three dies is about $220. To get three dies made from scratch could easily be more in NY USA. A machine shop here would likely charge a rate that would make your head explode. Mine head explodes here all the time! 😊😆. Unless it comes from China, nobody here can afford ANYTHING! 🤮

Nice, how about a clevis pin for the top bolt of the turnbuckle, forming a quick release for opening the throat larger if needed. Example, something has 6 inch edge around the thin material that needs planishing.

Know that measuring issue real well. Sometimes we get side tracked or miss read the measuring tape. As you said with steel you can add or subtract the length or just replace it.

Great tool Div, I believe it is the top hammer face that needs to be more highly polished to ensure the more pristine panel surface whilst the lower die need only be at say 1000 grit finish. Love your Bushman's pedal mechanism using simple plumbing fittings. Awesome.

Thank you... young man? 🙂 Yes I made the dies from EN8 which can harden quite well if you do it right. But the EN8 is already a little tougher than normal mild steel, so first wanna see how they do
