A ribbon cable from the board to the USB tip would work as well. I imagine that it'd be prone to fatigue though.
@ahandlethatisnottaken
@ahandlethatisnottaken 6 лет назад
The most comfortable position for the slider is in the middle. So that would just make it unnecessarily thick, because apart from the PCB, you would also need a pretty sturdy connector between the slider and the USB plug.

@17931793248650

If the board was permanently in place then the board would have to be wired to the female USB port to achieve the same slide and bending wires repeatedly results in breaking the wires. So in the end, moving the entire PCB with the USB port was the most sensible thing to do.

That's actually how alot of thumbdrives do it. Sliding everyhing out gives less points of faliure than using a ribbon cable that has to be soldered on both ends and is flexed every time the stick is moved.

Had lite 3 thumb drives (one still active), 2 music players and a wireless stich with that mechanic, although it has become less common over the years it seems. It has one big benefit: no cap that can get lost. But I would like to see a shorter variant.
@CybershamanX
@CybershamanX 6 лет назад
+Daniel Thank you for pointing that out. I was going to say the same thing, so I'm glad I looked through the comments first! Yes, it would just be an additional single point of failure that would eventually break. I guess it being a kit you could just solder on some new wires, but why deal with the hassle? ;)

Yes there is an adapter like that albeit more pricey and inherently limited to 10gbit/s and thunderbolt is way to expensive. My recommendation would be a normal sata adapter which can be had for 10$ and a ssd from the used market( even new ssds can be had for cheap if they are 250gb because people upgrade them outright. So you can make a drive like this for 40-50$ nowaydays with most of the perfomance.

Having the entire PCB slide to eject the USB connector has the advantage that you have simplicity and strength. You can lay the circuit out in any way you find convenient (e.g., without worrying about having to bypass a sliding piece in the middle of everything) and you don't have to engineer a connector connection that has to survive repeated sliding. Also, the point of failure is at the edge of the PCB and the enclosure, meaning the slide-out connector is much less likely to break. (Downward pressure on the slider is spread across the entire PCB instead of placed on a narrow strip of PCB or PCB-like material which needs support in some way.) In a mass-produced item like this I would consider this an elegant engineering solution. (I know Linus likes fancy stuff, but sometimes the fancy stuff gives you more problems for no practical benefit.)
@Davlenar

Hello from 2019! Suggestion for future video: Given Samsung claims 3.5GB/s read speeds and 2.7GB/s write speeds on their 970 Evo pro, and Thunderbolt 3 claims 5GB/s transfer speeds, an m.2 nvme thunderbolt 3 enclosure would be theoretically unbounded. Thunderbolt 3 also has PCIe passthrough, meaning it essentially hands over the PCIe gen3x4 lanes to the connected device; so conceivably the connected SSD would be just as fast as if it was directly plugged-in to an m.2 port. My suggestion is revisiting this video’s idea, to test whether an m.2 NVMe Thunderbolt 3 external SSD enclosure really is “the perfect storage device”. Edit: A suggestion, not a question.

Great timing Linus. I literally did this project 2 days ago. Used a 256 GB sandisk out of my carbon X1 that I had upgraded to 1TB, and a wavlink enclosure. I figured the innie connection would be a little more durable and let you move the enclosure where it doesn't limit the maneuverability of a laptop I plug it into. The particular enclosure you picked, the reviews seems to have trouble with UASP and windows 10, which may explain the lower write speeds vs. the T5.

Hi Linus, I bought one of those Silverstone units - had some similar feelings towards it. Something of note for everyone else though, not all M.2 drives are quite the same width. Specifically the Samsung M.2 2280 850 EVO SATA drives - they're perhaps 1 / 1.5mm wider than the 960 EVO's I've got, and that extra touch of width interferes with the sliding mechanics.

There is another good reason to have an M.2 (or motherboard SATA in this case) to USB adaptor that I feel should’ve been mentioned here: If you’re replacing your SSD in your system but you don’t want to reinstall Windows or don’t wanna lose your files (especially true for laptops that only have 1 M.2 drive for storage, like the Razer Stealth) then this adaptor allows you to use drive cloning software to clone your drive into your new SSD for seamless installation.

I would love to see Linus test a bunch of those DIY quad m.2 raid drives that run on Usb3. The enclosures seem cheap so their performance must be too good to be true

I've been using the Silverstone MS09 with Samsung EVO 850 256GB SSD for over 4 months now and for someone that uses Easy2Boot solution in order to have a multiboot partition, plus a separate partition for file storage, this has been the best purchase of this kind for me! I use this to boot my Bitlocker Windows 10 To Go (boots in 15 seconds from a flat install PartImage), multiple Linux distros, various PC tools and WinPE images - all from one drive. I love it!
@ruediix

Yes, they all work that way on the sliding port. The case is the one part that doesn't have any conductors. However, most use a more secure method of attaching the board than just lying it in there. Really good ones will actually have an inner and outer case, or at least rails between the PCB and the case.

Another potential advantage of the DIY solution: flash drives are not typically designed for very high endurance, generally significantly less than proper SSDs. At the very least, a real SSD will publish it's endurance spec, which flash drives typically dont. So, if you actually intend to re-write the drive frequently, the SSD would probably last quite a bit longer than the flash drive.

I think that moving the whole pcb is better than have a ribbon cable on the USB connector... the suspect that a sliding mechanism will last alot longer than extending a ribbon cable back and forth.

Extremely late reply but it would probably be around the same considering that the M.2 SSD is also using SATA, any major differences would probably come down to the drive controller

I absolutely love the performance of my T5. Until nvme usb-c thun(...) externals become commonplace, this will definitely be my workhorse. It's also worth noting that it has hardware encryption, which makes it an ideal place to store my local repos. The only negative I can even think of is the color up-sell tactic; you can't get the standard samsung black colored unit in any size smaller than 1Tb. Anything smaller and you're stuck with the strange off-green-blue color.
