You are going to forget your bench lab power supply after making this little and handy pocket power suppy. You can build it for your lab with chip and simple componects.
An electronic hobbyist or professional how does not have a good power supply, cannot get improved. Having an efficient power supply is a win for a beginner. It may help you in tough conditions.
and also you will learn some useful points about regulators in this video.

Wow this channel is perfect for me! The skill level is exactly at my level as an electronics hobbyist - you skip the things I already know, and explain the things I don't know. And most importantly, you show the hardest part - getting it to fit inside a project box. And you show every second of it, sped up just the right amount. I love making electronics projects but I always get daunted at the final step of getting it to fit in a small box and look nice, I find that the hardest part, because it requires arts and crafts skills, not electronics skills. As for a portable battery power supply, if you do decide to do it with lithium ion batteries, make sure to discuss battery safety! I have read many reports of people in the remote control car and quadcopter drone hobby communities and their home made battery packs exploding or catching fire, usually because of incorrect charging settings.

i just knocked a bench supply up using a panel module, a transformer i found in an old stereo, with a centre tapped 24v output, a full wave rectifier i made from diodes i found in a different stereo, and a lm317t and a lm338t and a switch. this video's bit with the 2 pots was so helpful. in general i couldn't have done it without your videos, especially the capacitor and diodes ones were very helpful. cheers

For the use of multiple of these pocket power supplies in one experimental circuit it is important to make sure, that each of these devices has its own mains socket power supply. In this way you are safe that the voltages are really galvanically separated from another in order to make parallel or symmetric power supplies. Otherwise you need isolated dc/dc converter modules in your pocket power supply. I would also recomment to use SEPIC converter modules (they are not much more expensive), because mains socket power supplies are mostly limited to 24 V and dc voltages of 30 V or more are a nice to have option.

I built something very similar during the pandemic! It's so useful that I find myself using it every day. I used the step up/down buck converter (the one with the blue LCD) and changed the potentiometers as you did. I fitted 2 18650 lithium cells in series to power it so it's truly pocket

Wow. Amazing. So can I make 5 of them and use 1 19v input 5 amp. Then have 1. 0.8v @1 amp 2. 0.6v @ 1 amp 3.1.25v @ 2amp 4. 3v @5 amp 5v @5 amp. Also is there a current limit that can be added

My first bench power supply was a repurposed PC PSU. Soon followed by a panel-mounted power supply module fed by a 48V AC-DC converter, from a design on YT. Current and voltage limiting to 2 decimal places, excellent display monitoring. The only thing I don't like about it is the membrane keys.

A battery operated pocket power supply is considerably more complex. You have to integrate the batteries. You have to use a SEPIC switching regulator to get also voltages higher than the battery voltage. A regulated current limit should be implemented to avoid damage of the batteries. And you need also an integrated charging module or a battery managment cycle to avoid undercharged operation.

No power supply has been properly tested until the dynamic performance has been evaluated. A supply can be made to have extremely good DC regulation, yet suffer from very poor dynamic performance, with the voltage undershooting and overshooting as the load is increased and decreased. Worse, sometimes it can get into a state where it is unconditionally unstable and become a power oscillator. One of the ways many relatively crude switchers are made to look good is to compromise dynamic performance in favor of very good DC regulation. (Boost and flyback converters operating in continuous current mode suffer from the "right half plane zero" problem which cannot be fixed with normal frequency compensation methods, requiring that the bandwidth of the regulator be made low.) There are at problems that can come with putting remote potentiometers into the circuit to set the output voltage. One is that noise pickup in the connecting wires can lead to unpredictable behavior. With linear regulators this usually isn't a problem. With switchers it can be a big problem. Another is that, depending on where the pot is in the circuit it can change the frequency compensation of the circuit with the change in its resistance. Another is that, again depending on where it is in the circuit, if there is any "roughness" in the pot and the resistance goes very high momentarily the output voltage of the supply may do the same - the circuit loses the ability to regulate entirely for microseconds to milliseconds. A much better design uses the pot to provide a DC voltage which can be heavily filtered, if necessary, from a stable reference. The voltage from the pot then becomes the voltage reference for the regulator. Many of the simple SMPS ICs make that approach difficult.

I have built one of these following Electronoobs tutorial here on RU-vid. Those Voltmeter/Ammeter give an incorrect current reading even if you try to calibrate them (some are worse than others). This is an ok solution but I still use a multimeter to double check voltage and current before I connect a load.

This was really cool. I saw you using the pocket-size power supply in another video and wondered where it came from. Now I see you built it. I probably need to watch it again (and again?) to catch everything I missed the first time. I'm curious to know how effective it is and what the limitations of it are (how would it compare to a professional power supply within the range limitations of the homemade version?). Really neat. This is a switching mode power supply while professional bench lab power supplies are linear. And also bench lab power supplies have ability to restrict current on output while this power supply is not able to do that. I'm am planning to make a video about battery powered pocket sized power supply. Wait for that 😉

If you're going to make a battery-powered portable version, you probably don't want to use a simple buck converter because that can only supply a regulated voltage less than the input voltage, and there's a practical limit on how many 18650s you can carry around and still call it "portable". Using a cheap buck/boost module would allow perhaps 4 batteries and still let you deliver up to around 30V regulated at a couple of amps for around half an hour. Finally, there are cheap buck/boost modules (ZK-4KX type) with built-in displays and adjustable voltage and current limiting for around £8 from Ali Express. Just need case and connectors.

Sir, I loved the video, but I have one question - as one who knows little to nothing about electronics: how are you powering the the power supply? Surely, not from AC mains supply? If I can ask another question: is it possible o make a battery-operated power supply? I have an oscilloscope that requires D.C. input, but am unable to source a suitable power supply, or battery; your project would be most useful were it battery-operated.

You do not have a bench lab powersupply. You have a switchmode variable power supply. Switch mode power supplies are noisy as hell and can't really be used in a setting where noise is a factor.

You _can_ make the output of a switcher quite quiet, but can be difficult and really demands you know what you are doing. Filtering after the point from which feedback for the error amplifier is taken degrades DC regulation because of the resistance of the inductors that are pretty much necessary. Adding extra filtering (like a pi filter) ahead of the point from from which the feedback to the error amplifier is taken can grossly alter the gain-phase characteristics of the circuit and destroy dynamic performance - or turn the whole thing into an unpredictable power oscillator. There are a lot of cheap switchmode "bench supplies" on the market these days. I suspect most are pretty horrible in comparison with well-designed linear supplies. The ARE a lot more efficient. (I have an 80 volt, 15 ampere linearly-regulated bench supply. It is VERY heavy and the fans would suck in any small child passing too close. I actually used it as the input source when I was doing DC to DC switcher design. I hate switchers. I never did any straightforward types - everything was for some special purpose with demanding characteristics. Did I mention that I hate switchers?)
