Years (maybe decades?) ago, I picked bought a 25' bar top from a restaurant auction. At the time it seemed like a great deal for $25, especially since it had a large oak edge. I obviously had no need for that size bar, so I cut it in half and gave a portion to a friend. The other half was tucked into storage for a long, long time. Well, I decided to take on a basement remodel, and install the bar, shortly after the kids were born. I framed the bar in, reworked the top to fit the space, and there is sat for about 9 years. The kids wanted to finally finish the basement, so we tackled the bar area as our first project, primarily because I knew it would be the messiest, and most stinky, of the projects. They really got into it, learning how to use a few different types of sanders (belt sander, palm sander, oscillating tool) as well as how to use sanding blocks. They really enjoyed laying down the polyurethane and seeing how it transformed the wood (and made is smooth, Coby). The laminate job was the first that I've attempted something like that, so it was a learning curve for all of us. As Coby states, make sure you have the laminate lined up, because as soon as the contact cement touches, it's stuck!
All-in-all, it was a fun project that turned out well. Now we're onto the floor!
