"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

The more videos of yours that I watch, the more i want to move to Canada. It's not just the scenery, its you and all of the wonderful people around you that makes it seem so wonderful. I've lived in the U.S. my entire life, and I'm ready for a change! Something new. Something better!!

@@ModernSelfReliance I like that saying. It's getting pretty bad here, in so many ways though. I'm REALLY ready for a change. My family and I will probably end up moving out of the US in the next couple years. Canada seems like the best option. Thank you for all that you do and share with us. My father was a carpenter for 30+ years. Watching your vids reminds me of him and when I was young, watching him work. 😊

Really good video Kevin. Good to see Don out and about, very cool! Chris definitely knows his ways to fish, very good! The build was cool and thought the fire pit was a good touch! Sure you and your daughter had a blast skating! The light you had mounted on the shack was very cool, lit the entire area very cool man! Can't wait to see the next one!

My son just recently installed the vevor heater in his tiny home. Called me last night from Huntsville. It was around -18c when he called. He has not completed the insulation yet, but he said he had 2 windows open. I am getting one for my trailer. It will compliment the woodstove very nicely.

I like your "Man Sized bird house" or "Human Bird house". It's a great use of garage doors, what better building material is there that will support it's self like these and insulate you from the cold? They're not unlike the collapsible ice shanties or tool sheds but good thinking really. You could even stagger the joints (like brick or block) and make a larger structure (not that you would need it) like a lodge or something. You need a way to anchor your fishing shanty so if you go to sleep the wind won't blow you across the lake! What a cute kid! Everybody needs a sweet heart like that at home.

For the door on the ice hut/ porta-cap idea: have the door fall open from one of the ends. And have a small/thin latch at the top. Save the integrity of the length panels, and less little parts to keep together. Love the idea. And it can open the possibilities for improved floor space for future versions.

Currently know many homeless that would benefit from these in the U.S. However with no money source, once the diesel ran out, its expensive to replace. I would love to know the dimensions to build as I've been homeless before, and actually dream of a tiny home! And Im crafty so have some ideas on how to make it work more efficient for myself. I would so live in this and feel blessed. I live in a fairly hot state so a split level would be more useful than a heater here. What a great way to recycle what would be trash for a home!!!

Nice little tiny house., fish shanty. I agree with Chris that you could raise your heater. Sure you have it low to heat the floor, but your ducting could solve that. If higher you could exhaust higher out the end wall, instead of bottom. Then use your exterior exhaust to warm you a bowl of water. I also agree with easy in/easy out, but not really a ramp. Just use strapping to connect your lower/upper panels on the wall sides. Another hinge on the lower door sections. Then you could flop it down for easier in and out. But you could pull it up if just sitting inside looking out. But I wouldn't open that all the way down to the floor, I'd only go half the distance (like if you are stepping over a 24 inch wall, then extend your lower door by 12 inches). I'd also put in porthole windows on either end. But overall, great design. Thanks for sharing. I'll ask my homeless friend if he wants one (got to be better than just hunkering down under a tarp, that has no way to lock).

I have one of those diesel heaters in my camper van and knew before you showed it that the exhaust being so low was going to melt the ice. I have vents with ducts so I can aim the air wherever. So you could raise the diesel heater up, and still have the air blowing by the floor. Then the exhaust could be up off the ice.
