this is one of the few things on my bucket list that I would really like to accomplish before I die. I desperately want to harvest catfish from my own designed and constructed, healthy catfish pond. you got some serious equipment out there

We call it structure and it needs to be put in beneath the bottom grade if you plan on swimming or fishing in here safely. Get on down there and punch in a hole and fill it with the junk tree trunks and cars or whatever the hell the one guy claims in in the wild in ponds. lol

I'm really impressed with the Chris and his crew does. Thankfully in 2022 he now stretches his pond build like this one over several much longer videos so we get to see all that goes into building a new pond and even his pond tebuilds.

What a beautiful job you guys did on this project, working with the natural landscape and creating a very substantial deep end that will hold huge amounts of excess water. I would love to see how it looks today in 2019.

I spent a lot of time in Michigan where a lot of people have ponds. I love them, coming from Australia where water is hard to get at the best of times you just have to have a small lake in your back yard. The Great Lakes in Michigan is a must see, I went fishing with my brother-in-law we went out so far that we couldn't the USA or Canada and this is all fresh water. Fantastic

Hi Chris, I stumbled upon your channel and now I'm hooked to your videos. One suggestion as a new fan I have for you is if u make more than 1 video of the same project can you tag them as Part 1, part 2 and so on? It makes viewing of your complete quality job more appreciable. Also maybe after making these beautiful ponds...you happen to visit after t water is put in..you cld show us how it currently looks....will truly appreciate this effort if u do.

Hey Chris... Now I know that everything costs money but, it seems to me that you could move a whole lot more brush with a grapple for that track steer. You already own a large skid steer that will move brush quickly. The dozer is just too slow. That would free you up from the haul truck and would certainly be a lot more efficient. Like I said. I'm not doing the buying but it's just a sugestion.

The 500 million-gallon question is this, "Did the pond hold water even though it was constructed in porous soil?" If I was a gambler, I'd say there was some very sad faces after a few heavy rainfalls. I sure wish constructing a pond was as simple as digging a hole in the ground.

Another great job..i love these pond jobs....Question- After you do the burn pits and borrow pits when you fill them back with old trashy dirt or the unburnt leftovers ..do you ever have problem with the pits settling over months or years and have to go back and touch them up??? Whats the best way to prevent burn pits and borrow bits from settling?? Is they a general rule of thumb when filling and fixing these back?? Just trying to learn from the best..Thanks
@awdken6
@awdken6 7 лет назад
I was wondering the same, if they settle a bunch more...
@letsdig18
@letsdig18 7 лет назад
I try to track them in as im pushing dirt back in, we even loaded up the haul truck and drove back and forth over it to pack it down. it may settle some but i tend to leave them a little high anyways so it ends up leveling out. most of the time sticks and stumped wont ever rot that far down in the ground because they cant get any oxygen

Looks awesome! Is the water source runoff/ rain? or spring / creek fed? The fish structure and beds look awesome, I bet you can get pretty creative there too. What kind of seed and method (broadcast spreader on ATV/ Tractor or planter)do you all find works best? We've got two really small 1/8 acre cattle watering ponds fed from field runoff. One dried up this year. I'd like to make them bigger, but concerned they won't hold much water.
@letsdig18
@letsdig18 7 лет назад
we actually just seeded that with a hand seeder. didnt take long. we do have one that goes on the back of the tractor for the larger projects.

How porous is the soil? I have always thought that pond buiders lay some kind of insulation material at the bottom of the pond to prevent water from sinking into the ground. How do you survey to see if there are any massive rocks several feet under the top soil? If found, do you just work around them or do you blast them with explosives?

In my area a rough estimate for equipment this size would be $100/hr per machine. Maybe a bit less for the articulating truck. Plus cost of whatever materials (dirt, stone, pipe, ect.) need to be brought in. Seeing this took about 10 days probably be between 30K - 40K, maybe even slightly higher.
