Nothing wrong with what you did. Love that you did half lap joints with glue. I don't think you needed to use 4x4s. Same thing could have been done with 2x4s. If built right, you also don't need the wheels. Hinge hardware is great, but maybe too much for five foot gates. (Not ten foot...) I tend to overbuild things, but this is overbuild even for me. Thanks for the good video.

Just one word. Simpson strong ties. Like the hinge hanger system and how it can be adjusted for plumb. Nice job. Thanks for the video!

You should ad some flat “L” brackets in the corners. And some flat “T” brackets in the intersections. I did that on a outside door I built ten years ago and it’s still really solid

thanks for recommending this hardware since I first saw your videos months ago I have since bought 6 of the 24” straps to build a 16’ gate and wanted to ask if the lag bolts/ carriage bolts you used for the straps, how long are those 3/6 bolts. Did you use 8” or 6inch”
@thomaswooderson320
@thomaswooderson320 Год назад
Hey bro I'm not trying to be picky I'm just trying to give you information that's actually called a carriage bolt not a lag bolt that you're using on the hinges. But good video keep up the good work.

what could you do to keep the the gates lined up in the middle, i noticed yours is about an inch or so out of line on the top and bottom?

@some guy with tools How did you address covering up the hinges? I've got these hinges ready for a dual 5ft gate that needs to open out like yours does and I'm just racking my brain trying to figure out how to hang the pickets and everything look seamless 🤔🤔. Thanks in advance

Did you come up with a remedy for this problem? One of my concerns with this is having too big of a gap between the gate and the set fence.

great video and thanks for adding links, that hardware looks beefy enough but how come you decided to invert the top bolts, seems like they would help bear the weight but being inverted they don’t do much aside from letting it swing. I don’t mean to bash since it’s operational just curious. Thanks
@heatheresteubing-fisher9729
Inverting the the top hinge prevents thieves from being able to remove the gate off the hinges to steal big items.
@mckenziekeith7434
@mckenziekeith7434 Год назад
They aren't needed to bear the weight. Just prevent the gate from tilting. The outward tilting force at the top hinge is much larger than the weight of the gate.
@santinho212

Good build nothing wrong apart from using making massively heavy 4x4's .Two factors that contributes to sagging 1weight 2 poor bracing but you got supporting wheels on it I should be OK. Well done still

Looks good. 4x4’s. That’s a lot of weight. How’s it hanging? And why is the top hinge post inverted?
@DdDten
@DdDten 3 года назад
I’ve seen other gate Hardware installed to where the the top is inverted. I’d assume that way it doesn’t ever slip off.

I am looking for hinges with ball bearings, do they make them?
@RedBeard20842
@RedBeard20842 2 месяца назад
Most gates really don't need bearings they just unnecessarily complicate things. But if you want you can drop a set of thrust bearings on the pintle using the same set of hardware he used here. However I would recommend using an oilless thrust bushing, flowed by a smooth washer on top. Buy it the same size as your gate pentle. Like 5/8 in this example. It will cost $10 or less and you still get to use these awsome hinges

Can't criticize anyone willing to work and do it themselves. I would suggest that next time you replace it, get a metal livestock gate and attach the wood fence pickets to it. I used them with vinyl fence panels and it's fantastic, no sagging.
@regulargeye2009

Self tappers and washers when doing vinyl, I second this. Definitely pre drill the vinyl
@chillwill5080

@@billlee1724 I drilled through the top and bottom fence panels and gate pipes and used stainless bolts and nuts through them to attach. I love my gates.

4.05 can see the frame sagging already. Should have pulled the top and bottom horizontal frames half lap joints into the vertical frame, so each hoeizontal frame is gripped top and bottom. Much tighter, stronger join with minor sagging over a long lifespan.

4x4s are overkill for a gate that size. If it won't sag, why would need the wheel?

It don’t make a lot of sense to use a heavy 4x4 frame if you’re going to put casters on it. You could have just put the casters on the existing 2x4 frame!
@jeromegarcia5396
@jeromegarcia5396 2 года назад
a thousand pound gate for no reason at all, like lowering a 4x4 drive 🤷
@thomaswooderson320

Well if you got free hardware to use as a demonstration why not use the extra support.
@LIBERTY0RDEATH
@LIBERTY0RDEATH Год назад
Right what’s the point of showing how much weight the hardware can hold if your putting casters on it. If the hardware is that strong which it sure looks like it is, why use Casters?

That 4x4 is over kill.. plus the problem wasn't that u used 2x4 for the first build the problem was that u didn't lock the end properly.. using L brackets on a gate in hopes of bracing it is a guaranty fail
@mckenziekeith7434
@mckenziekeith7434 Год назад
The first gate could have been fixed up by running a steel wire between the two L brackets. Tighten the wire with a turnbuckle or by twisting until the gate is level.
@johnc4642
@johnc4642 Год назад
The original gate was not built right from the beginning
@walleyeye
@walleyeye 3 года назад
You could have accomplished the same thing with the existing 2x4” frame lumber and it would have solved your problem for good. Just because you used heavier lumber doesnt mean it wont sag. In fact the heavier lumber may end up making it sag, even with the cross brace. I hope it works out for you but with todays price of lumber you could have done the same thing with the existing framing and added a cross brace and viola.
@SomeGuywithTools
@SomeGuywithTools 3 года назад
You’re probably right, but the reason I opted to go with 4x4s is because the previous frame had started to twist from the wind loads hitting it. One side leaned forward, the other backward because of the winds that push on it. So I wanted to try and prevent that from happening as well
