Here is one of my favorite small blocks of all time, a 1970 Chevrolet LT1 350! this came out of an old street race Nova from the 70's and is going into 1970 Camaro. This is fun video, nothing in depth, just something Jimmy and I decided to do! This is part one, building the short block.... we are using the factory GM parts that are period correct for this engine, including the TRW pop up pistons, pink rods, and nitride steel crank. Part two will be the modern twist.... so stay tuned for that!!

Back in 1970, my friend had a 1970 Yenko Deuce with headers and a 3-speed automatic 4:10 gear. It was dark green with the Yenko white stripes down the sides and on the hood. Very quick car. Had lots of fun on those warm summer nights on Woodward Ave. I was with him one night and he raced a brand-new purple with white top 426 Hemi Challenger with an automatic. They raced three times from a standing start, and the results was the same each time. The Yenko Nova was about half a car in front. One thing about how Yenko set up the Nova. It hooked up extremely well. The car was slightly higher in the front and the weight transfer was perfect for launching of the line. Great car and many memories cruising Woodward Ave. The 1970 350 LT1 is a great engine. I also remember he raced a brand new 1970 LT1 Corvette with a four speed. The guy was with his girlfriend, and it was a close race, but the Yenko having headers gave it just enough performance advantage to edge out the Corvette by about half a fender. Oh yes, another great race was a 1969 yellow 427, 435 HP Corvette with a four speed. The Yenko was right with the Corvette until second gear and then the Corvette quickly pulled way. Those 435 HP Corvettes were very fast. Oh, the memories. One night we ran across this guy who had a 1970 black with white stripes SS Chevelle. The badging on the side said SS 396. Well, it was no 396, that was for sure. After he blew past us after he got traction like we were standing still, we caught up to him at the next traffic light. Just so happened my older brother ended up buying this same car a few months later, due to the guy going through a difficult divorce. The engine in the car was a 472 open chambered roller cam long tubed header torque monster. This engine had 13 to one compression, one large Holly Carburetor, dual point distributor and 4:88 rear end gear set up for the quarter mile. The transmission was a beefed up 400 automatic. Wow, that car was one wicked street racer. So many great memories. I am 70 now and those days still bring a smile to my face. Nothing like the sound of two high performance V8's side by side going through the gears on a warm summer night. Love to have an LT1 like your build to put in a 1970 Nova or Camaro. Great engine for sure.

@@2HacksGarage Yes, those 302's in the Z28 were great engines. High revers for sure. One race I forgot to mention that was another 1970 SS Chevelle automatic with an all-aluminum ZL1 427. After he blew my friends Yenko's door off, he pulled over and let us look under the hood of his Chevelle. Sure enough, just as said, it was an ZL1 427. He was a rich kid, couldn't have been much more than 22 years old. He told us the engine was hot and he had the LS6 454 taken out and replaced it with ZL1 427. I can remember when he caught traction and blew past us, I could see daylight under the front tires. From what I understand, the ZL1 427 was 30 pounds heavier than a cast iron 350. The L88 427 in which the ZL1 is the aluminum version of the engine designed for Can-Am racing is well over 500 HP. I could go on and on about my memories while riding with my older brother and our friend with the Yenko Deuce Nova. Oh yes, I wasn't with my brother that night, but he told me he raced a 1970 Baldwin Motion 454 Camaro. He said it was a close race, but his 472 Chevelle slowly pulled away in second gear. That big block was crazy fast. It was best to leave it in drive. If you ran the RPM's to high before shifting, you couldn't keep the tires from braking traction no matter what speed you were traveling. 7200 RPM shifts were a piece of cake for that engine. It was rough on flex plates though. My brother cracked a few of them while racing. That was another reason to leave it in drive while racing. Thanks for writing back. Have a blessed summer.

@@2HacksGarage I know back in the day Baldwin Motion did build Vega's with many different engine options. One was the LT1 350. I can't imagine a 427 ZL1 in a light car like a Vega for the street. I am sure if you could get it to hook up low 10's or maybe even high 9's would be possible. All my time cursing Woodward Ave, I never seen a V8 Vega. That LT1 you built would be a perfect engine for one of those sleeper Vegas.

Stock chevy pink rods, stock Chevy TRW high dome 11:1 pistons, factory steel crank 3.48" stroke crank, 010 casting 4 bolt main block, erson roller cam, AFR aluminum heads, morel roller lifters, crane rockers, howards push rods. all bearings are clevite and the gaskets are fel-pro

@@2HacksGarage You mentioned that the block was bored 0.030" over. Also stating stock Chevy TRW pistons. Are they the stock pistons or are the pistons an actual Chevrolet replacement/ rebuild part 0.030 over? If so, what was the part number? Thank you in advance. I have an LT-1 crate engine that has been froze up for 15-20 years. Currently working to free rotating assembly. Heads and oil pan still installed. Hoping to install new rings, inserts and valve seals. But I'm sure with my luck the cylinder walls are pitted beyond glaze breaking with a hone and will regrettably require boring. Also should probably pull crank and install rear seal.

Can I ask why the cam is not installed by dropping it in vertically instead of horizontally?

It’s because the engine is mounted to the stand that way

@rescuedandrestoredgarage 6 months ago New subscriber here... I enjoy the video, My Dad and I build one back in the late 80"s for his 74 corvette. ran great did some street racing with it in my time. I was wondering what the cam specs. are , and did you have any valve to piston clearance issues.
