This has been a massive project which I have been working on the last few months. A rollercoaster in my backyard, powered by a 90mm air ram developing over 1200 pounds of thrust. Check out Part 2 to see how it works!

That piston design is brilliant. Backyard rollercoasters will soon be usurping swimming pools, trampolines and jungle gyms as the new norm in home recreation.

If you had the budget, EMT pipe would be killer for the rails! Would require pipe bending, but would hold up much better. Also, for safety, I'd also add bigger bottom casters. Rubber bumper at the end also instead of block of wood, as well as use of something over the piping on the last 6' to add friction to the rollers if this thing goes to far up!

@@WillFromLondon Impact drivers are great, but you should understand that an impact driver puts more stress on the screw. About one out of 20 screws I drive with an impact drill actually breaks either on installation, or later due to fatigue. A regular drill put less stress on the screw.

No, 1) it is called a launch coaster 2) the drum method is almost completely defunct, it is usually a hydraulic or a magnetic launch
@Alex-wn5rc
@Alex-wn5rc 5 лет назад
Technically a hydraulic launch uses a drum connected to hydraulic motors.
@sketchgarage6896
@sketchgarage6896 5 лет назад
@@Alex-wn5rc yeah, but most hydraulic launches use a series of hydraulics to launch, instead of powering a drum, but even these are rare, as electromagnetic launchers are far more reliable

It looks like you used dense foam washers to seal the air at the piston. What would you think of a round seal flap, made of thin plastic sheet, attached to the piston, like a section of a very shallow angled cone, pointed aft so the pressure drives the flappy seal against the inner wall of the cylinder, without causing too much friction? I'll try to make a drawing.
@WillFromLondon
@WillFromLondon 5 лет назад
I ended up swapping out the foam for a leather cup, like a bicycle pump. It sealed very well but needed a small relief valve behind the piston in order to allow it to slide back without building up pressure.

For the track did you just use regular PVC pipe? What size did you use and also how did you bend it. Some people have used ABS pipe. Do you think that would be better for a launch coaster like yours? I have built the piston but I am ready to get started on the track.
@WillFromLondon
@WillFromLondon 4 года назад
callan R I just used 40mm 10Bar (1.5” Sch40) for the track, and made 5 metre (16’) sections. I didn’t do anything to bend the track, the PVC is flexible enough to just form into the shape you need as long as you aren’t doing tight bends. Then a wooden spine made from 1x2s was added to strengthen the whole thing up. Send me a link when your builds done! I’d love to see it.

Envision 52 LIM would’ve been really difficult to pull off and been pretty expensive. Would’ve been cool though!
@coltonsupergame
@coltonsupergame 4 года назад
You coul’ve used a system similar to Top Thrill Dragster where there is a magnet on the underside of the car, which “connects” to a magnet on the track. He magnet on the track will then launch forward taking the car with it. This would likely be more expensive, but it could travel faster, and the design would be simpler (The train wouldn’t need a bumper for the piston to push).
@WillFromLondon
@WillFromLondon 4 года назад
ColtonSuper Game it would be an amazing system that’s for sure, just a little outside of my budget unfortunately. I built this whole thing for around £350 ($400). I know that Will Pemble on YT is trying something like that though, you should check him out!
@protowave
@protowave 2 года назад
Dragster doesn't use magnets for launching; it uses a steel hook called a "launch dog" that drops down from the 3rd car of the train into a shaped groove in the catchcar the brakes are no-contact magnetic, though.
