All the nuggets you shared in this video! You started and ended your video talking about blessings in your life 😊 present and past. And mention of the bee sacrificing for the colony and bees not making it through the escape foreshadowed the tribute to your friend and his Air Force crewmen 😢 and in between, the turtle and “Smoky Grey” and the bees helped prove your sustainable theory 😊
I greatly appreciated what you shared about the older man who lived down the road from you and your feelings about how our current generations are missing out on learning from their grandparents and other older family members. I have been thinking about this a great deal as well even for my own kids. I grew up around my grandparents and many aunts and uncles and was always hanging out with my granddad and listened to his stories about the depression era and the hard life they endured. Although my 3 daughters (Now in their early 30s met my grand parents and my folks, I don't think they had a chance to hear the stories we are talking about and what they all went through. I'm 68 now and have 6 grandkids and I hope I can have the opportunity to spend time with each of them to talk with them about the lessons of life, etc. Thanks for sharing your perspective and I share your feelings about how the current and next generations are going to miss out on much. Thanks and keep up the good work and word. Ken
Sorry for the loss of your childhood mentor. May he rest in peace. They truly are the best and hardest working generation this country will ever see. Your economic talk was great. Too many people get mad when people bring that up. We're in trouble with our spending. It's not an if anymore, this is basically unrevirsable at this point. Water and food are the most valuable things we have and we wont be able to protect them. Its sad, all the work that was done generations before us is just going to waste at an all time record speed. Teach your kids the value of life and land also the life of things around them. Everything has a purpose, live off the land that is around you, and do everything to protect it from evil. RIP Billy, thank you for your service to our great country
Totally appreciate your comments about resource use, consumption, capitalism, and our modern way of life :) Like it or not, our future is tied to a sustainable environment and way of life. Economics needs to take into account at its fundamental heart, the conservation and regeneration of the natural environment upon which all life on earth depends. These are core value generators, not intangibles as most economists have treated them in the past.
Duck river will turn into a creek and then a flash flood when all that runoff from all that asphalt hits the river. I agree about sustainability of our resources. In the last couple of years the US just gained another 7 million new visitors who will all need a place to live and gas for their cars and food to eat. Then we see all those 5 to 10 acre homestead going up that have manicured lawns and produce nothing and we lose all that farmland to feed the people.
Great stuff as always, I truly look forward to your videos. I'm a small sideliner and this is always so helpful to us that aren't looking to get too big showing your knowledge. Thank you for taking your time and know a lot of us appreicate you taking this time to do these videos!
Thanks for sharing his story with us 🙏 I'm so with you on the next generation. I hope the river thing falls out and doesn't happen. I look forward to the next video.
So disappointing that they want to convert rivers to creeks to create more asphalt and concrete jungles. And yes, you hit the nail on the head when it comes to the younger generations, they have no idea how hard our ancestors worked and hardships they encountered. I feel a lot if not most of the youth simply don’t want to hear the stories and learn the old ways.
Smokey Gray? You watchin' turkeys? North Iowa finally got some rain, too late, uncapped cells in honey supers were all dry, bees been feeding on stores already. Pulled supers and started feeding the very next day. Robby buggers right now up here.
Speaking of asphalt, my state can’t even fix the roads anymore, where I live. In part, because the federal government spent about a trillion dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan, paving their roads. It’s not just “poor planning,” it’s evil, and the penalties for such evil will be paid by the liars and those who didn’t argue or raise their voices against the lies. May the Lord of the Earth bless you and your family, Nathan, because before the Dawn shall come the terrible darkness. Woe to those who do not speak up.
People born after 2000 maybe even 1990 have no clue that less than 100 yrs before they were born, the horse was still the primary mode of transportation. Electricity, indoor plumbing, telephone, radios, etc… were luxuries that most people did not have. Certainly no air conditioning, refrigerators, ice for drinks, etc… I read an article this past week by a young reporter indicating McDonald’s would be getting rid of self serve drink stations in their restaurants over the next few years. The tone of the article indicated that this was an unbelievable & risky move as it had never been done before in fast food restaurants!!! They have no clue how convenient & easy things are these days. It’s terrifying to think about what would happen to these people if the power grid was to crash?? It’s something I do not wish to ever see.
Sorry for your loss, Nathan. I lost all my grandparents in my early 20s. It wasn't until they were gone that I realized how profoundly they influenced me. You're absolutely right that the world does change as we lose the wisdom and experiences of our elders. Do you intended on doing a "lessons learned" video this winter that reviews what worked, what didn’t, and what you're changing in your management strategy next seasom?
Nathan I knew a man just like you described. He was my dad . He was a medic with the 7th armored devision. Same type person. I dont know what it was about that generation. They were something special. My dad's stories will live on with me and my kids. But will soon fad away.
I keep some cheap butterfly nets at the hives to capture those hornets in a swift swoop, works really well! So with you on that concern regarding land/water usage - mankind fails to learn from past mistakes - greed and power. Hope you can fight it some how. Billy same age and generation as my dad who was also in the air force as a pilot - it wasn't the biggest world back then (air force) they might even have known of each other wouldn't that be something?! Had uncle who was a merchant marine same generation - they get that look in their eyes when they are telling their stories. Character is foraged in fire so to speak - living and working through good and hard times, praising and thanking the Good Lord Almighty during both. Send me the spelling of Billy's name and I'll ask my dad about him.
Another great video, thanks. I really liked the intro, you're doing a great job at this. That triangle bee escape is called a Quebec bee escape, it is Canadian. I use them, and am now pulling honey and the nights are getting cold, but I don't have enough experience to have an informed answer. I don't seem to have a lot of dead bees but as memory serves I have, just can't remember when or if it was cold.
I agree urban sprawl and all the destruction that comes with it needs to stop. Sorry for the loss of your friend. Greatest generation for sure. Learned much from some in my life. I have a six lane toll road coming through my bee farm. Fighting it but we will see. Just heartbreaking. Enjoyed your video. Take care Nathan.
Sad fact is City dwellers care very little about Rural folks. There is a bullet train proposed between Dallas and Houston, and that'll only benefit those highly populated areas. Instead of following the interstate they are proposing to follow electrical easements, bringing it about a mile from my farm. They pitch it as using land already taken so it has minimal impact. Well, they dont say it splits family farms and divides cattle grazing and wildlife with fences and razor wire. Not to mention the noise and vibration. Its really a sign of our politics of dividing people at every chance.
Your comments about water rights really hit home. Everyone thinks the unreast in Israel is about religion. While we aren't being smart about our interpretations about what our religion says sometimes, the root of the conflict is, and always has been, about water right and access. We now produce more reclaimed and desalinated water than we use but it's always a source of worry and strain. I hope the plans to divert the Duck River are never implemented. Take care.
Sorry about your adopted grandfather. I had one neighbor the same way, but he remembered seeing the indians come down the river in their canoes and trading furs for staples. He told of a story where he and his sister at the age of 7 or 8 hid under a building when the indians rode up into their homesite. Those stories were more exciting to listen to then any TV show. I miss him also.
