Here is another birdhouse job we did during Memphis Monday #3 Fixing a bird feeder/birdhouse. • 3 Restoring Bird Feede...
This is a five nesting box condo design I found on the internet. My MO when I copy a design is to attempt to be true to the designer; I try to copy things closely, leaving my "creativity" at the door. If I want to be creative, then I should design my own birdhouse, and not inflict my "ideas" on somebody else's work.
That being said, I know my copy is not perfect, as I didn't have plans or dimensions; the picture wasn't clear enough to make out fasteners; I couldn't figure exactly the slope of the roof, etc. I put the birdhouse together with cedar and coated deck screws. I've had good luck with coated deck screws, and I'm guessing the coating will keep the screws from reacting with the cedar. Very little glue was used, as I only used glue at the peak of the roof, and to hold in the perches. Incidentally, many birdhouse builders don't install perches, as perches tend to help predators more than the birds.
Finally, the birdhouse is finished in cedar oil and spar varnish

Hi, nice video. You must have been a teacher. You provided all the information and then you did the work. You had your test fixture to demonstrate all the information and you also showed any obstacles that arose you pointed them out and you showed your fix. Keep up the great videos... Steven

@MemphisApplegate

The prototype did help. I always regret it when I don't build a prototype on something I've never built before. What happens is the finished product becomes the prototype as I change and rework the project. Moreover, not having a prototype makes the video process harder (and I certainly don't need that). Specifically, what happens is that I often video hours of footage that isn't used, as I change the design and have to start over. Bottom line making a prototype often saves me work, as I don't have to video it. But most importantly, while building the prototype I can concentrate totally on the project. Thanks for the kind words and the comment. Let's get to work.

Helpful hint: if you’re making a birdhouse for small birds, it’s better to have NO PEARCH under the hole. It can give predators a foothold to attack.

Excellent job, only comment I have is it is always best not to use any preservatives inside the boxes, there could be toxins in the preservative that is harmful to adults birds their eggs and the chicks. otherwise great job! Will probably make one myself here in the UK.

I think your design looks better than the one in the picture and I'm sure there will be many happy birds taking up residence inside. The only thing missing were miniature drawers with drawer slides. Just kidding! I only mentioned that since so many of your projects have drawers with the nice metal drawer slides. :-D

I got another comment on this video, then noticed that I never answered your comment!!! Only seven months late, and heck fire, I'm sober - unlike that special entry the other night. Special indeed. I'm horsed up a little better now on birdhouses. Fact is, this is the first one I ever built from scratch, which is why I built the prototype. Also, being a rookie birdhouse builder, I felt I needed plenty of guidance, which is why I tried to copy that picture. The picture showed a rather rougher, more unfinished look, which is what some of the purest birdhouse guys go for. Some of these purest go to extremes, with no finish, exact sizing requirements for different species, special ventilation and correct lighting, etc. It is amazing when you start a new kind of project to learn all the things you never even thought of. Thanks for watching my video SEVEN MONTHS AGO, and I'll try to do better in keeping up with comments!

Perhaps that explains all the dead birds under this thing! Just a joke of course, but the guidance is conflicting. Fact is, check around on the internet and you will find an expert that agrees with whatever you wanted to do anyway. Thanks for the view and the comment/

@PidasianHippie 7 лет назад
I just read in your description about not installing perches. If you weren't copying this design exactly would you have left them off for that reason?
@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 7 лет назад
No I would have put in perches. I think the experts probably know best, but a birdhouse without the little dowel perch would look funny to me. Moreover, about every birdhouse I've ever seen has perches, and I've never heard that concern until I read it on the internet. Now, I know I should believe everything I read on the internet, but sometimes I weaken.
@PidasianHippie
@PidasianHippie 7 лет назад
We have a lot of bluebird houses around here that don't have the perch. I think that may be because of the way they nest. Well, if it is on the internet it is true of course! Hahahahahha
@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 7 лет назад
On every new project I learn so much. Every kind of project has its own traditions, and rules, and experts. I'm currently reading up on Purple Martin bird houses, as a buddy wants one for next breeding season. I swear, a person could get a PhD on any of these subjects, and still feel unprepared. But I've beat the system. By doing a little bit of everything I don't have to claim to know anything. Of course, that may be wearing thin a little on cabinet making. Well, I gotta go. I'm going outside to set up cameras so that trolls won't put oil in my overflow tank. Oh wait, I don't have any trolls. So in that case, guess I'll have a nightcap. Thanks again for watching and commenting.
@PidasianHippie
@PidasianHippie 7 лет назад
Purple Martin bird houses are easy. Just grow you a mess of gourds and dry them out, drill holes in them, paint them white and hang a bunch of them on a cross beam on a pole. Hhahahah I can't wait to see your version of them. Your strength is that you are not afraid to tackle anything. I have to fight that sort of fear constantly....(brag section) I actually repaired my toilet by replacing the fill valve this week. Of course, I shouldn't brag because I waited until I got a water bill that was $20 more one month before I worked up the courage to do it. RU-vid is a great tool for things like this. You better get those cameras set up. You never know when those nasty trolls will strike. It is funny how they seem to strike some people and never others. Weird. I can't wait until I get a troll. Hahahaha Enjoy the night cap. I guess I will get to talk to you when you aren't as smart.
@TheOnGridHomestead1
@TheOnGridHomestead1 7 лет назад
Memphis Applegate: I think keeping the perches was a good idea since most predators wouldn't be able to fit inside the small entrance holes (at least the enormous ravens we have around here wouldn't) and the birds seem to like perches. I don't know much about bird houses so I'm not really sure what types of predators "they" were referring to. BTW, everything on the Internet really is true. :-D (I had to edit this since for some strange reason YT doesn't see fit to post the reply or the name of the person being replied to under the correct comment. Oh wait, for RU-vid there's nothing strange about that I guess.)

If your birdhouse is made from cedar you wouldn’t necessarily have to put any finish on it at all
@PidasianHippie
@PidasianHippie 7 лет назад
You know Mr. Axe/Ax/ Hatchet is going to be very upset that you called your paper hat your most prized possession of all you own. At least you did give him a cameo at the end. How did you come up with the 27 degree angle? Did you come up with a certain pitch that gave you that angle or did you measure it off the one from the internet? I never knew that the hole for a bird house had to be a bit angled. You have taught me something today. When you first showed the back, I couldn't figure out why you had put the angle where the upper and lower boxes joined.. As you were talking about making the bottom a bit shorter to allow it to rotate, I realized that you made the angle because if it were flat, it wouldn't rotate. Your little bits of genius never fail to amaze me. I know you didn't get this idea from that picture. I am sure your buddy's birds will be living in style in their new condos.
@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 7 лет назад
Mr. Axe/Ax/Hatchet doesn't consider himself a possession. I told him the reason he never does anything is because he is a supervisor, in charge of the blackboard, the chalk, the deckchair, and the paper hat. However, the responsibility might be eating him up, as I heard him yelling orders to Mr. Paper Hat the other day. I may have to separate those two. 27 degrees just looked the best as I tried out different roof angles. I got that hole angle trick from something I read on the internet. I wouldn't have thought of it myself I don't think. The angle between the top and bottom was put there to allow rotation, but also (and importantly) drain water away from the seam. This geeneus didn't think of that trick either, as it is standard practice to angle "scarf" joints to the outside to facilitate water drainage away from the joint. Thanks for the kind words, and TWO comments, all on Sunday!!! You're the greatest.
@PidasianHippie
@PidasianHippie 7 лет назад
Uhoh! It sounds like there is trouble brewing over there at the chalkboard. Mr. Axe/Ax/Hatchet and Mr Paper Hat at war can not end well. You may end up with a pile of confetti and no prized possession. If you chose 27 randomly, you chose well because it looks great. Sounds like that darn internet was quite useful for this project. It does make sense to angle that hole for drainage. So are you saying that having the angle allow for rotation was a happy bonus in this instance? I hadn't thought about drainage. I walked later today so I had time to watch your video earlier. I don't know if I had told you that I was having some serious issues with getting the hitch set up for my truck. My brother (the woodworker/electrician) helped me get it at the height it needed to be and he helped me hook it up and I pulled it and backed it a few times in my yard. I was actually able to move it over to the spot that I originally wanted it and it is straight with no damage to any property at all. First step yard next step actual pavement and roads. Hahahah At this rate, I will be ready to go camping in 2020.
@MemphisApplegate
@MemphisApplegate 7 лет назад
Hooking up to the trailer is the hardest part. Took me a half hour yesterday trying to hook up to my boat (grass mowing). Really, towing and backing are pretty fast learning curves. It's the hooking up, securing, and setting up that are a drag. I'd check with your local RV dealership for the latest tricks on making that all happen. I know for sure you need a wheel on that hitch setup, and it would be wonderful if you had a concrete driveway to park it on. I say, that her out this weekend and do some camping. But don't forget the firewater.
@PidasianHippie
@PidasianHippie 7 лет назад
Hooking up is going to be a huge problem for me. I think I am going to investigate a backup camera. There is a place for one on my truck, but I have read that they don't come prewired for them. There is also the pole system where you put poles on your truck and trailer to line them up. So far, my brother has helped me do this part. Some of the hookup and setup I am able to practice here at home but I am sure it will be totally different when I am at a campground and have an audience. I have a concrete driveway, but it is on enough of an incline that I wouldn't be comfortable parking it there. However, I am going to have to at least get some gravel put down for it because I can't handle the grass growing up around it. If I can overcome this learning to pull and back issue, I am going to start a business that teaches people to to trailers. I know I can't be the only person who has this problem. I have thought of going to one of these truck driving schools and see if someone there can teach me. Firewater will always be on the list. Hahahaha
