I got to the end of the video and was like "Wait, that's it? What about the tool changer?", then I noticed the "Part 1" at the end of the title... Lol. Looking forward to the next part
Same here.... Saw the titel on my mobile and instantly added to my "watch later" list. On my moblie "Part 1" was not existent :-D Hope we don't have to wait verly long.
Stuff is happening but I'm stuck waiting for parts in the mail. I already have the firmware talking to multiple toolheads happily. Once I have parts the physical side can be manufactured.
@@TeachingTech Excellent. I've been in the queue for ages for a RatRig V4, but I'm now eyeing off the Sovol and tool changer setup if it can be made to work. I pulled the trigger on ordering the Sovol so I'll have time to get to grips with it before embarking on the tool changer journey. Wanting to print support materials and 4 colour prints without the crazy waste and the extra speed a tool changer should bring.
I hate to be that guy, but how long until we get a part 2? I have a Sovol sv08 coming in the mail and I want to get it up and running with a tool changer and the 8 track AMS.
Can't wait to see how this turns out. I've been on the fence about buying the SV08, I've just been waiting to see if it's popular enough for people to start modding it, and what kinds of mods will be made. If you can get this printing with a tool changer that doesn't cost all of the money in my bank, then I'm all in!
@@smellslikeupdog80 I'm seriously thinking about the ERCF as well. I have a Railcore that I've converted to Klipper and I'm thinking about putting the ERCF on, just don't know if I'm ready to make space for it yet, my workspace is limited. 😁
Biggest "awe shucks" of the day - "Thank you so much for watching, and until next time ..." such a cliff hanger! I'm now on 4 Sovol units and the SV08 is on my RADAR. If you get this stuff sussed out, I'll be jumping on it as a 5 head unit.
That safety warning! I am like, "I'll just watch this video. I've been electrocuted. I'm not interested in risking that again." Thanks for another high quality video! Even when I don't plan to do what you show in a video, it's still fascinating, and useful to know. I'm hoping by the end of this series, you will get it working, and sovol will end up offering a premade version with the multiple tool heads based on what you designed. That is a product I'd be very interested in.
I think you should definitely provide your CAD files even if it's not done yet. I bet this video inspired quite a few other SV08 owners to look into this and see what can be done. Giving them the files now would allow many more people to start working and innovating in parallel
Yeah, if he wanted help with testing, CAD or w/e, he didn't make it very easy. I didn't find any information in this video and the stealth changer github repo does not have any open Issue, PR, Branch, Fork or discussion that pertains to adding support for the sovol sv08.
When something is this early in development, sharing the CAD files would probably do more to frustrate than anything, I'm sure he will share the files as soon as he isn't in the 'iterating them every day' phase, and then they will be more useful for modding and feedback.
Probably wants to keep it under control so he can direct the project after completion. I think its completely reasonable because even when something is open it sucks to have your goals overrun.
Having an SV08, you would have a much easier design process for a tool changer by switching out the weak point of the Sovol first, their tool head unit. Replace it with a Stealthburner or Galileo 2 and most of your work is already done with the Voron tool changer design.
Interesting idea to use actual SV08 toolheads! My plan was to recreate the stealthchanger mod with dragonburner toolheads, but this looks more interesting. Best of luck!
Wow!! I have always designed and built my 3d printers myself from scratch. I loved doing that but it takes an insane amount of time to get to a finished product.. I was thinking about adding tool changing to my coreXY printer but realised that there was (ideally) not enough space for that and could better design a complete new printer 😆 My plan was to build the DAKSH tool changing mechanism (channel '3DUnplugged') so for the first time not entirely my own design, but a good and sturdy tool changer design is not to be underestimated. Unfortunately, finding time for complete new build is a bit of a thing for me right now, and then I see this 😍 This looks very promising!! After 10 years of 3D printing, maybe I'll actually buy my first 3d printer!? 😄 Looking forward to the tool changer upgrade video(s). For me, a heated chamber and a built in carbon filter is a must because I mainly print ABS and ASA, so that would be nice extra upgrades .. Thank you Michael for starting this project!! 🙏
I'm pumped to watch this series! I was on the preorder, my SV08 ships this month. Thanks for all your hard work and incredible videos, I can't wait to see the progression of this project.
I was also planning on adapting either stealthchanger or tapchanger for my SV08 whenever mine actually shows up. Glad to see someone else taking this project on.
I've been watching this printer and your channel closely. As usual, thank you for the thoughtful mods. In the case of the SV08, I've seen this phenomenon before with companies that try to take DIY open source or open hardware and commoditize it. No one who understand the Open ecosystem would have any objections to this. But I'm not buying an SV08...yet, until they get their quality control back between the lines. As you've experienced with both this SV08 and even the Prusa XL: day one products usually stink, because they've been rushed to market with the paint still wet. When the SV08 hits the second phase of series production, I'm probably in. Because by then, either they will have actually achieved a market ready "Voron-Adjacent" or the community, via the Open Hardware and Software, will have made the product viable. I'd prefer Sovol fix their mess, but I've watched the Open Hardware and Software worlds for decades, and this is usually how it goes. Great work!
I am clearly sold on the Sovol SV06 and SV08. I have a SV06, and I would get a SV08 if I had the room and the money for it. Hopefully that may happen in the future. The assembly time is shockingly quick, and the print quality is very good, with some tuning. 2 caveats, however; 1. Sovol is subsided by a government with a name that starts with a C and ends with an a, but won't mention any names, for both manufacturing and shipping, so the have an advantage on pricing. 2. Sovol printers are made as low cost as possible, so it is a given that you will be doing some tinkering and printing of replacement/mod parts. As for the second point, the amount of tinkering and printing is very minimal, in comparison to printers built before 2023.
just for the fan noise mod, 100% worth watching -- thankyou Micheal ( i ordered my SV08 just after the launch and the Australian delivery process is just about to start)
This is awesome! I'd basically written off owning a multi-head printer anytime soon; both the Voron and XL are out of my budget. A modded SV08, however... Genius idea! I'd be even happier if Sovol started offering it as an upgrade.
Thanks a lot! It's high time for innovation. Through your project, you will help the 3D printing world find an affordable alternative to a multifilament print. This stimulates. In addition, I would like to thank you for the technically good explanation. As a teacher, you are to the point and you don't diverge. You make me very curious what you are going to come up with. More so what the consequence of this will be. How much space this will take up, if I can apply this with mods to my K1. And so on and so forth. All in all, a relief to see something really new for serious do-it-yourselfers/professionals! Top!
Can't wait to see how far you go with this man are there definitely needs to be some competition in the tool change Market. My Hope Is that companies will see how easy it is to do this and start doing it really quickly driving down costs
Oh man I'm excited for this! I'm still waiting for the delivery of my SV08, but this is exactly the kind of mod I want to try with it. Looking forward to future installments!
Very much looking forward to the next parts, since they might encourage me to mod my Voron to a toolchanger (it's not that different after all 😀). Love your clear explanations and style! Keep up the good work!
A thoroughly excellent idea my friend. I am looking forward to the next video, but I bet Prusa is not.... I am still shocked you didn't send the XL back and get a refund, you must have really, really wanted a tool changer.
This right here will set me down the path of getting an sv08 the price savings to build out a multi head tool changer even with some work will be well worth the money. Can't wait for the next video...
Great idea and great video. I'll be following intently. Please don't make us wait too long for the next installment. I've been really wanting a tool changer and hoping/waiting for another manufacturer to come along and give the PrusaXL some much needed competition. If money was not an object (and it most certainly is!) I would have already bought the PrusaXL.
To lower cost further I envision a dead tool heads. By dead, no electronic wiring to dock. The receiver in the SV08 would have fixed extruder motor, fans, heaters and electronics controls. Dead tool heads would have extruder gears w/coupling, filament in path, heat break, heat bock without heater, air ducts, and wireless ID chip. Dead tool head would couple to extruder motor shaft. Nozzle heat would be done similar to Bambu A1, or with dropping into induction heater coil. Fans or CPAP cooling. Chip ID for configuration of temperature, and other filament related parameters. Docking may have facility for standby heating.
Excellent plan. I wonder if the moving gantry design is best for these though. A moving bed makes it easier to have filament purge. Also, heating could just be wired. It needs only 4 wires anyway and a bowden is required anyhow.
Excellent start to what I'm sure will be a great series! I've been running my Ender 3 since late 2019, and I've been wanting something a little bigger and hopefully faster. It might not be for everybody, but the SV08 looks promising. I don't care about one-tap printing or the fancy aspects of the $2k+ printers. I like the paradigm of the Ender 3, and I think this is in the same spirit: lots of features, low price, open source, potentially a little janky, but nothing that can't be fixed with some upgrades. The CAD model of the Ender 3 has been great in designing and verifying upgrades, and I'm sure that was the case for you with the SV08. Looking forward to more videos on this!
Add MeToo to a 5 head SV08 should one become available. Hopefully Sovol will productize a successful result! This would be a real value add over the standard Voron 2.4. Great stuff! Intend to follow along.
This looks very promising! I switched from my SWX1 to SV08 and encountered your mentioned problems also. But that is a minor inconvenience when looking at the price. I was thinking about buying an ERCF v2 but was quite unsure due few videos on it... But if your toolchanger idea works, then oh boy... That would be overkill for this price! Thank you so much for your all your effort (for the SWX1 videos also)!
So excited. A tool-changer has been my dream since I saw Zach Friedman's and the XL. I want; multi-color and/or multi material printing but do not want the waste that the "pooping" printers have.
Thanx for this great idea video. I was looking at building my own Voron, but the cost is almost 3 times that of the Sovol, because of import duties. Even if I buy a kit from a local supplier. With Sovol SV08, it's become alot cheaper to own a Core XY printer. Just hoping I get a local supplier in my country soon.
Looking forward to the comparison video of this vs the co-print system. And that fan mod was awesome, one of the things that was keeping me on the fence about buying one.
I finally switched from CR-10 max to Bambu Lab X1C, and now that I have seen better quality and just pressing print from an app, I think it would be going backwards to buy an SV08, which still seems half baked. I really do like open source items, but I have less time for tinkering and just want stuff to work. I still won't be buying a Prussia XL, because I'm not sure I see the advantages yet. I have Mosaic Palette 3 Pro, still in the box from Dec 2021, so I plan to use that if I need weird filament combinations. Grad school and full time job is time consuming. I mostly do functional prints for outdoors or in the hot car temperatures. Great video Michael!
@@xeraoh what I am saying is I have the huge build plate with CR10 max, and Mosaic Palette 3, so I would use that over SV08. The SV08 still needs too much time and effort by the user.
3500 vs just under 1000.. insane price difference, I've never even considered printers that cost more than 400€ myself, so I'm glad to see that there are options for tool changing that doesn't involve paying ludicrous amounts for a prusa machine, or using a bambulab printer with a (very wasteful) AMS
If I knew something like this was coming I wouldn't have gotten the A1 Combo. But tbh, it just works and filament is not that expensive that it would matter for someone like me that only prints occasionally and only flat multicolor that doesn't do more than 10 color changes in a print
This is exactly the budget they should aim for, more people only wanna spend 400 to 500 for something top line. Prusa has completely lost it with their 4500 dollar
@@TheOneAndOnlySatan The problem with the XL is that it currently has no real competitors (at least, not in the consumer space, and not with a tool changer included), meaning they can charge pretty much whatever they want. The only similar printer I can find is the Proforge 4 from Makertech 3D, but I can't find any videos on it that aren't from Makertech themselves
Looking forward to this series. I was contemplating going stealth changer on my voron 350 2.4 a few weeks ago. Just going through the research/documentation at the moment to see what’s needed.
The Prusa XL is an amazing machine, made in Prague. That kind of justifies the price, since everything is more expensive there than in China. If I had the money, I'd go for an XL, but I do have a soft spot for Prusa in general. The Sovol looks like a great Voron spinoff, and given the price, I will more likely buy one than an XL.
I ended up swapping my preorder of the xl to an mk4. This looks like an interesting way to get to get the multi filament type printing. I look forward to how the build goes. Printing tpu seals on complex shape asa electronics boxes or toys to make them water resistant and maybe waterproof is something I want to do.
it really just shows the price for toolchangers is still a big premium, will be intresting to see more cost optimised out of the box printers we get over the next few years. i am also building a stealthchanger, my V2.4 kit didnt cost much more than the SV08. i suspect the seller is closing shop.
I'm often tempted to go from my K2 max to the this printer. I think I'll hold out until they do a larger build volume printer as they may sell the enclosure panels for it then I can print with ASA 😁
One XL over three SV08's any day of the week. And not for any misplaced Prusa loyalty; It's true I have run Prusa printers almost (key word) exclusively for a minute, but that has little to do with my choice to continue to do so. "Buy once, hurt once". I'm buying a tool. It's the same as getting a Festool or a Hilti powertool over a Princess Auto or Hazard Fart; You're paying more in the hopes that when everything is going to hell; SOMETHING will go right. A perfect example of this is when I was an early adopter of the MK3 and MMU2. I ended up with a random and catastrophic failure that rendered 80% of the printers normal functions... non-functional. And it was well over $600 US in parts. Was not a good day. Everything was going wrong. Until I got a hold of Prusa Support... Who replaced every broken, possibly broken, or otherwise maybe-screwed-up piece of equipment for both the printer, and the MMU. For free. With rush shipping. Yeah. Wild. So I run (almost) exclusively Prusa machines. Because I know if they all catch fire tomorrow through no fault of my own; My ass is covered. Because Prusa support has never let me down. Thanks for the video~.
Hi! So looking forward to part 2! Anyway. What is your take on the PETG controversy that has been brewing? What is your experience with PETG (if any)! Great job, keep it up and thank kyou!
