Do they not use shark teeth (watchout/stop) as sign in the road in LA? Its also possible with lego.

Hi. The digital city is not something I am interested in. Your brick city is coming together amazingly well though!

When building the MILS plates for buildings, it’s a good idea to preplan adding a 2x8 technic plate with holes (2x4 works too) which is where you can route wires for lighting in the future. Same for sidewalks where you want to have street lights sit - even if you never add actual working lights and just tile over them (always prepare for the future)

The grocery store needs a roll up warehouse door next to the back door. 👍🏼

Love this idea. Not only does it buy you time between physical builds but it provides the viewers additional insight into your design process. Your narrative is also super valuable for the same reason ❤❤❤❤

It feels like the worst time to just get started into lego, as my 10yr currently is, she only has Nova's bedroom and a few of those tiny sets that cost like $5-$10 from Walgreens or such and then a bag of loose bricks I managed to score at a secondhand shop. Not a lot at all and with my husband being the only one working it's too much of a pinch to spend $50 on a set. We vicariously live through the lego experience that you and other content creators provide with building tutorials and mocs and tips for saving space as well as money. With what she has she's got enough to mess around and come up with a shop or something but she'll have to tear it down if she wants to do another build. I wish I could just take her to the lego store and let her pick whatever she wanted but that's gonna have to wait. And it's soooo crazy how even sets that get marked down are still a hefty chunk of change. It's said that investing in lego is more lucrative than gold because the value just increases, even when the sets are cycled off the shelf. Rather than being marked down because they're not popular or phased out for new merch they remain constantly at retail price if not higher. It's like there's no such thing as a cheap set or clearance anymore. Not like with other toys that you can find at half-price because it's run its course. I think, in order for you remain consistent in the algorithm as well as with your followers that having digital build videos will help. Especially if you're mapping out the city you intend to physically build, it's like preview. So until you get your brick orders this is a good way to still pump out content and maintain your place on here. Also this provides a more in depth look into the actual process of building, which i find very interesting.

Great video concept/format. A virtual city offers unlimited options/concepts of design, building techniques and it could be a better alternative in the future, due to parts prices, as you mentioned. I encourage the idea of a virtual and real Lego City projects side by side, as i assume, that you were already building virtual 1st and then take into reality when possible. Keep up the great work AFOL TV

Love this! And echo the fact Lego (like everything, other than wages) has got really expensive. This gives a real insight into how you go about building the skyscrapers and the sorts of techniques. Studio can be really fun and I start off building Mocs in Studio first. What would be good is if you could show hpw to export that build to bricklink from Studio or render it maybe?
@AFOLTV

Just use the shopping cart icon in the upper right to export to Bricklink to buy the bricks :)

I brickbuild my roads … in a similar manner to yours but without the LEGO road plates. What I did in order to mitigate for things like crosswalks, is that I divide my roads into 8 stud wide segments … so a 32x32 MILS plate would comprise of 4 segments, or 6 for a 48 stud wide MILS plate. This ends up,working quite well, allowing me to have segments with crosswalks, stop bars, bus stops (with different road surface), etc …

Cool, I am building my city out of LEGO in Brick Link Studio, right now, but it is becoming very slow, because my pc is not powerful enough to manage it. It is great because I can also see the cost of it! I also want to add a tilted road to add to the realism, instead of it being straight all the way through my city, do you have a tutorial on that?
@DIGraffiX
@DIGraffiX 5 месяцев назад
Definitely do more of these!!! I'm relatively new to Studio, but enjoy seeing the process and hearing your insight in using the program. Question, what is the part number or name of the road plate stripe 2x4 tile? I can't find it in the program anywhere?

At 16:29 when you go to place down the 8x16, i see you use a temporary 2x2 plate to help you snap the big plate into it's final position. Something I only started to do super recently is using the WASD keys to move bricks around. In this case, you could place the 8x16 at the correct height, shifted a stud too far forward (right over the doors), and use the W key to push it back into it's final resting place (assuming your Grid is set to coarse). You can also change the "grid" to allow you to move pieces by half of a stud, plate height, and there's a really fine grid setting for micro adjustments. What the WASD keys do depends on your current viewing angle. Sometimes pieces don't move where I'd expect so a little camera tilt does the trick. I find WASD positioning is useful for situations like this, so you don't have to build temporary structures elsewhere, but also for placing pieces down details that might not attach to any stud. Putting an apple on a platter, or bananas in crates, or something along those lines. Plus, rarely pieces may not connect in Studio where you know it can IRL, and this can more easily help you overcome that. Hopefully I'm not telling you something you already know, and you can try it to see if you like it and maybe save some time! If you like the idea but find WASD a bit clunky, you could alternately press T with a brick selected to bring up a transform gizmo that also lets you move bricks. Love the video, and I hope to see more! Happy Building!

Lego is really expensive, I'm currently building a 10 floor tower, functional, built around a central core with inabitated and kitted out floors. It's cost me well over $700 to build ordering direct from Lego. Bricks are cheap, it isn't the bricks I find expensive, it's the wall elements, windows and baseplates that really hammer the cost.

Why not place a square road piece in the centre, and those half things / crosswalks on the sides? Just wondering! Nice builds, been a fan for a long time now haha
@AFOLTV
@AFOLTV 5 месяцев назад
Wish it were that simple! On 32x32 the curved slope pieces for the sidewalk overlap if there isn't enough spacing. By breaking two crosswalk sides out, it allows more spacing between the sidewalk ramps
