This is my finished product for the Instagram Builders Challenge, I decided to play with the drawer slides and use dowels instead of traditional hardware or square wood. I was surprised with how easy it was to do!

Yeah me too. At first glance I thought they were pinned tenons. I think it’s better that you used a contrasting wood it made it a feature rather than a defect.

I love the way your son is totally not bothered about pushing the drawers all the way in and any one with even the mildest form of ocd (me included) is screaming at the TV "pull the drawers out" so thanks for doing it. And so that we can all sleep at night you have to show how you fixed it😀😀.The whole look of the project was fantastic and I love the dowel drawer runners and dowel covers they look very smart in contrast with the light wood.

Hahahaha! It was killing me too! I could just put a block or dowel or fender washer at the back of the dowel slides. But that won’t prevent them from being pulled all the way out. I think I have an idea that will work. And thanks so much!

@@3x3CustomTamar Laughed at the OCD remark concerning the alignment of the dowels, as you were placing them I wondered if that would come up, and it did! Now, I would have run the grain on the dowel 90 degrees to the grain on the leg, draws more attention that way...

That was my original idea. My son can take off his drawer full of dinosaurs and play on the floor. But I fear it might be dangerous that it could fall in his toes or something. Ha

If I had to choose only 1 power tool, I would choose to own a router. Not because it's the most practical or best productivity-increaser over handtools... it's just the most satisfying tool there is.

Great job young lady. Since the glues and epoxies today are so strong there are many many people that we see that are using no dowels or biscuits anymore. For the long term strength of your project you made a wonderful decision. The quality of your work speaks for itself. Great job.

That is gorgeous! That design would work in any room of a house. Kitchen island, desk, hutch, butler, you name it. And so easy to clean and to keep those glides running smoothly!

Love the idea of using dowels to make the drawer slides. I recently made a band saw table and used scrap strips to make an L shaped slide between the 2 x 4's using pocket holes to fasten. The drawer slides on the L on each side and it worked great. Thanks, I am going to totally steal your idea. Since we are in Louisiana, I had to figure out what you were saying at first. LOL Great work!!!

I love how your son couldn't care less about those over-pushed drawers, but mom the maker had to put them right. As usual, great build Tamar. I agree about the exposed dowels - too busy. However, that has to be compared to the time it takes to do most other types of joinery. Mortice and tenons are the best, but take ages and ages, even if done by machine. The dowel runners are very cool. Might have to try that myself sometime.

Tamar, finally, I have found a video of yours that relates to joints I can understand and even try to make. Steel joints rule, except that when I do them the finished article seems to lack something that is present in yours. Probably, the great workshop, the tools, the patience, the thought, the organisation and the care and attention that accompanies the planning of your work. Well butter my biscuits! That was an awesome idea! If I ever need to line something up I've been using dowels with the rockler dowel jig but that bit with the router and biscuits is top notch stuff tamar.

I absolutely love the drawer slides (dowels). You probably already know if you apply soap or candle wax to the dowels & grooves the drawers will slide really smooth especially if you have weight in them.

Great design! If you ever build another, I think I would look into maybe extending the dowels slightly and rounding over the ends instead of cutting them flush. Also, maybe staining them a contrasting color. Just a couple of thoughts that I had - I think it turned out great!

Those drawer slides are AWESOME. I think that you are 100% right on being a bit busy with all the dowels. Another benefit to choosing hidden joinery would be some added strength as well. Those screws are easy but I'd be worried about them loosening up over time going into end grain like that, especially if kids are using it. cool desk!

I have 20 yo drawings of a dresser with dowel style slides! Of course your stuff is very nicely designed and executed! I’m currently working on a chicken coop that is designed so that all of the lumber is cut at Home Depot before I get it home. two reasons: I drive a Prius and I’m in a wheelchair.

for a depth stop for the drawers you could cut the first inch from the dowel slide from the front and glue it to the drawer. If you pull the drawer out, the peace of dowel would pull out with the drawer and hit the rest of the rail when pushed in again. hope this was clear.. :D greetz from germany

I think I might try this as my first piece of furniture. I need to bite the bullet and I think we could manage the weight of this one with my disabilities and my assistant's (wife's) hemiparuplegia. I’ve got all the required tools but at a more entry level and your instructions were wonderfully clear, both content wise and technically. I think you did a great job. 👍😁 Plus you are a good problem solver and you solved 1 for me. Some people (men) think that women can't do stuff like you just did, but read Proverbs 31:10- 30 and get praise for your self. You fit the scriptures sited.
