Excellent build. I did the same thing, but over a period of about 15 years, and it's still not finished. I approve of your use of 1/4" jack connections. They are reliable, rugged and not as expensive as people think if you buy them in bulk quantities!

Hearing gary's synthesizer made my day! Your whole synth is so amazing. I'm working up to a project like this, I'd just designing guitar pedals for now though. I love seeing other peoples DIY synths! Thank you so much for making this video!

Congrats. This is amazing. It is a marathon to build so many and diverse modules, and you've put everything together so nicely. I got a semi modular from Arturia for my 4 years old son and I ended up playing with it more than he does, and thinking of how I could expand without spending a fortune, as ready made modules are ridiculously expensive.

I'm in the process of designing/building a custom Modular Synthesizer for myself, the design concept is based on the Moog System 55, and will have a total of about 44 discrete modules all connected via a common power supply, there's going to be an LCD Oscilloscope module included for viewing signals and control voltages, plus an analog 16 Step Sequencer with Vari-clock and midi tempo synch so it can be synched to the master tempo of a Daw, I'm also going to include four line outs with voltage-controllable panning so I can set it up for Quadraphonic Sound as well as stereo or Mono Sound, it will also include a Midi-To-CV Converter module and a total of 8 VCOs with several waveform outputs available.

Oh wow !! I just gotta say as an Aussie you have made me dang proud. SOOO well done, AND those tunes are brilliant !! Im a Sam fan too but your tunes are FAR better. I love the way you mixed the video with sample tunes. Im contemplating making a Kosmo sized synth as well. I notice you did everything by hand. Its puts me to shame who has a laser cutter, a cnc and a 3d printer and table saw. You have done what I have been dreaming of. BTW Im happy to do laser panel etching for you if you want. (Im in Melb) Anyhow you have a new fan despite me being 3 times older than you. Listening to your music, you get it ! I can tell.

For wiring the pots, switches and jacks, crimp connectors were the huge game changer for me. When soldering, I just solder 2- and 3-pin ones in place of the pot, jack or switch and can then wire them up super comfortably. Also great to be able to detach them from the board when troubleshooting. You can then perfectly measure the needed wire lengths for the sake of a cleaner cable management. Troubleshooting a module with lots of connections hard-wired to the front panel can be a real nightmare. Super great synth though!

I went through a similar path right around the start of the Pandemic also. I had just started building pedals and then I think LMNC starting making some PCBs and it took off from there. I gotta shout out two of the PCB designers Analog Output and Polykit. It's easier than ever to get PCBs fabbed now and very affordable. I've also taken a shot and designed a few of my own PCB's Kicad is entirely free. I'm about to start on the 3rd box and see If I can make some large mutable instruments stuff in there and there's a few noise bells, drums, logic modules and mutable instruments modules I want to fit in there

Brilliant video, really nicely structured, entertaining, informative and awesome music. I enjoyed every minute of it. I started my own diy synth around the same time as you and although I’m proud of what I’ve done it’s nowhere near your achievement (yet anyway) :) I recognise quite a few of those designs. You should check out Moritz Klein too. Who’s are the drum designs? The snare in particular is great. Also the side chain module is cool, where did you find that? Glad you finally managed to get your DIY take done ;-)
@hughr9366
@hughr9366 6 месяцев назад
Thanks! I used this design here as a base for the snare, although i ended up making a bunch of changes to it along the way so it will probs sound a little bit different. Its a good start tho www.gerbster.nl/tr82/snaredrum/ This one heres the side chain soundbender36.wordpress.com/2021/11/07/92-synthetiseur-modulaire-diy-ducking-side-chain-module/

You'd be better off clamping the Potentiometer SHAFT (The part you're removing) when you cut the shaft to length, instead of clamping the body of the potentiometer. I learned that the hard way, because sawing the shaft off with the potentiometer body in the clamp, adds a lot of stress on the pot itself and can loosen up the entire mechanism.

Super well made video! I melted a dick shaped scar into a finger with a soldering iron & abandoned my DIY synth dreams long ago. The dissonance from the out of tune oscillators combined with the cheerful melodies is both more-ish yet terrifying. Makes me feel paranoid about losing my house to an army of robot garden gnomes, but I'm not sure why (probably unpaid robot gnome taxes).
