Building a Dream Bike on a Budget - Klein Quantum Purple Haze 

Totally forgot they built road bikes. Man that thing is gorgeous. Not only stood the test of time, but actually still manages to outdo a lot of modern bikes today. Nice job!

Top tip: use a hairdryer to remove vinyl stickers! The heat softens the sticker and glue and makes it super easy to remove. Way easier than scraping them off!

Sweet build. I have an orange 1999 Quantum Race that still looks like new. It's full Ultegra. Been riding it all these years till August when I got a new bike.

Nice build. My 2002 "Plum Crazy" Quantum is getting a new 105 R7000 (2 x 11) groupset, Whisky stem and Dimension flat top shallow drop bar this spring. It will look a lot like this one, but with different wheels and tubeless tires. Thanks for the preview. I added a Fizik Arione Classic saddle, Whisky carbon seatpost, and Enve titanium QR skewers last year. Used Bontrager RXL tubeless ready alloy wheels were added 2 years ago. I bought my Klein brand new in '02. It was one of the last made in Chehalis. I've never heard this color/paint called "Purple Haze" though. Edit: After further research, it appears that your bike is a 2000. The paint job is a bit different, where the "Purple Haze" looks green at an angle and the "Plum Crazy" is more of a copper color in one direction and deep blue at another angle. According to the 2000 Klein Tech Manual, the color of your bike is called "Blastberry", even though it's referred to as "Purple Haze" in many places on the internet.

Amazing build and what a transformation! My personal differences would have been for a more slender looking stem like a 3t arc ii (Thomson 4x stems always seem to be over built for road bikes). Lovely build. How does it ride? That would make for a great follow up video

Tubular wheels are still the WAY to build a light bike. And with the Corsas the rolling resistance will be exzellent. Cool 😎 Job.

I think you were wrong to flip off the cage. That bottle seems like the problem. Control tech makes a lot of TT so maybe use another bottle

You inspired me to attempt something like it. Bought a 2001 Klein Quantum Race... Changing out groupset, cables wheels, steer, etc. I am familiar with. But how did you know which bottom bracket replacement you needed... Any online resources on this topic you can recommend?

Does anyone now if a Dura Ace 9100 bottom bracket will fit on a Klein Quantum? Wanting to mount Dura Ace 7900 crank.

Can you also make the same thing with my quantum pro please ? That will be great! I‘m also from switzerland.

I watched this during my breakfast this morning just before my ride. A lovely way to start my day. Your build is unpretentious and sophisticated and you did a better job of putting it together than most bike shops I know. Also nice that I'm not the only one cutting my seatpost. 😁 Was the weight with or without pedals? That's surprisingly light.

Love the fade paintjobs on those old Klein Quantums.

Thomson stem, Thomson seatpost, Chris King headset, Tune saddle are very very very nice components but that's not really budget proof I guess? Very nice bike!!!

Two years ago I was able to find the same Klein with the same paint and 105 groupset that had been in storage since it was purchased. The lady only rode it twice. Her husband said the stiffness of the frame scarred her. The dropouts still had all the paint on them. Best $750.00 I ever spent.

I've got an 80's raleigh 531c frame with a very similar paint job. Beautiful bike but with a few battle scars now. I'm doing a retro modern(for the frame) build with it but on even more of a budget than you. It's starting to look like the wrinkly old uncle of your bike.

The Earnie Ball Musicman Mystic Dream paint makes everything look good. Guitars, bikes, cars, evereything.

It's a beautiful bicycle mate. I just don't understand why you put tubulars on it. Maybe you don't have vandals in Switzerland who break glass on the roads, and maybe cyclists can ride around for months without getting a puncture. If that's the case, it's brilliant. In Australia, we have idiot vandals who love smashing bottles on the road. When I was commuting to work on a bike, 3 flats per week was not uncommon. Sometimes more, sometimes less(yay!). 95% were glass punctures from young guys throwing bottles out of car windows. I'm certain the Brits, Americans & Canadians experience the same. Yes, I was young once, and I did a bit of that kind of vandalism myself.

I normally have a preference for silver groupset, but original build was terrible, and black works with the color. Actually I would have been curious to see ultegra colors on it. Not a cheap build, but probably a good value & look for money, and the base didn’t deserve an actual cheap build.

For such an environmentally friendly mode of transport, I’m surprised how much plastic is used in the packaging. Shame on Shimano! Get with it .
