A complete build guide/process on An Electric Bike I recently converted that has a top speed of 66 KPH & 55-kilometre range
The final product has a top speed of 66 kilometres per hour and a 50-kilometre range. I used an Aliexpress eBike conversion kit with a direct drive hub motor. I decided on a direct drive as they provided a more reliable and durable system. The battery pack used is a 17.5 amp hour 13s battery with Samsung 35E cells in a hailong battery case.

Build Time (including CAD, Metal Work, Assembly): 51 hours
Cost: Somewhere near $1300 including the bike itself

I too live and vancouver and built an ebike during my senior year back in 2013, the last clip you biked by Burnaby mountain secondary was my school. My specs are crystalyte hs motor running at 25 amps with regen, single gear set up, 100t front (custom) 11t rear, 17 ah ( recent upgrade, with double grin torque arm v2 which I got from their shop back when they start at their original location, the bike lasts man, even for someone like me who s not nearly as bright and careful as you, they last! No problem after 9 years of aggressive riding.

I'm afraid i'm going to have to disagree when you said "my poor choice of getting the largest battery possible" - IMO it was a good choice. Tight AF is still "it fits". Nice tight tolerances. Even if you only ever use half of its capacity, that's good for the battery and will make it last longer done right (you probably know all this, but i am stating why i think it's the right choice). I'd like to see an indepth video on your use of torque washers - the torque arm is the #1 snag of putting a hub motor on a regular bike
@LargeeeScaleLife
@LargeeeScaleLife 2 года назад
I’ve been a bike mechanic for over 20 years trust me those chain stays that that torque arm is hooking up to is not made to carry that kind of a load it will eventually damage that frame just be aware of those people when you’re doing these do it yourself systems if you’re going ultra high power you’re probably going to break your frame eventually. Not to mention if your having a stretcher frame open your weakening the worlds risking the breaking of the frame even more if it doesn’t fit it doesn’t fit

Update #1: I had my first flat tire after surpassing 300 total kilometers travelled. I think this is due to the low quality tube that was provided in the kit as well as my ignorance to following the correct tire pressure. I had 2 options: 1) patching 2) replacing the whole tube, but seeing as the speeds this bike will be traveling at and the stess that will be enduce on the rear wheel while accelerating, I have decided to replace the whole tube. I will be filling my new tube with Slime, which is a self healing agent for tires. Safe to say this flat was a excellent learning opportunity and hopefully you don't make the same mistake!

Use tire liners my dude. It's a tough strip of material that goes between the tube and tire. I've got over 4100km on my DIY ebike with no flats despite having to pull shards of glass out of my tire. I use Mr. Tuffy

Nice video! The better option would be MIDDrive Bafang BBSHD. It is more expensive, but if we put the money and time invested to make these boxes for cables and controllers, to the final price bafang would be cheaper, lighter, faster, with more power to climb, nice looking bike. I get bbs02 with IGH and 14.5 Ah / 48Volt battery, it cost me 1000 dollars - geared hub is little bit noisy but I am pretty happy with my choice.

@@AaronsCreations -- Nothing wrong w Hub Motors when it's got enough horses 750 / 1000 / 1500W. Some advantages are it's a bit simplier conversion -- and riding too: you're not too concerned about shifting into the right gears all the time as w the Mid Drive Motors. Friends and even girls can hop on your ride w/o you worrying if they know what they're doing ;). And another key factor is the Hub's propulsion is independent from the bike's drivetrain and this design is much less stress, wear n tear on the chain, derailleur, cassette -- and so these parts don't need replacing as often, which is time consuming and $$.

Disc brakes are heavier than rim brakes and may be over rated. You definitely need good brakes for an e-bike. I have been doing some research and quality rim brakes may be a better solution for a lot of ebike conversions based on frames without disc brake mounts and your conversion proves there may be other problems with conversions as well! Off road pedal dirt bikers and road bikers, prefer quality rim brakes, besides being lighter, they really work well! Rim brakes vary in quality a lot. Good ones cost $$$.

That requires maybe a machine shop to drill holes. Are there local shops in NYC that can convert my Royce Union mountain bike into a e-bike? I tried the 26-inch e-bike but that was too small. Its hard riding a regular bike around here unlike in my younger days.
@aaronclu
@aaronclu 3 года назад
I am not sure! But I am sure any shop can drill holes for you as a simple electric drill will work. I'm confused as to what your trying to drill, but if its the dropout (part where motor goes in), I would advice against it. Drilling reduces the structural rigidity of the mount and causes micro-fractures in the frame which will expand over time to eventually failing from the amount of force applied when your riding.

I really love this video. Why didn't you do a front hub conversion? I want to do this to my bike but I'm thinking front instead. I don't know the pros and cons.
@divixmage
@divixmage 2 года назад
Front hubs are significantly less safe and effective than rear hubs. 1. Traction is a lot lower on the front than the back, since you aren't sitting on the front wheel. 2. The steering becomes a lot heavier, and more prone to swinging back and forth. 3. It's easy to have the front wheel spin out under power, especially during turning, resulting in a crash, as front-wheel spinout is the most dangerous kind. 4. Front forks are usually less sturdy for mounting motors than rear dropouts are, as rear dropouts have to resist some torque already. In any case, you would need genuine torque arms (as in, not the kind used in this video, which are a flawed design cloned in China that have a known safety issue), but front forks are much more problematic to install motors onto.

Hello wich brands should i prefer when buying a 1.5 kW kit from aliexpress?
@AaronsCreations
@AaronsCreations 3 года назад
I recommend a kit that fits your budget. At the end of the day, these kits from different sellers all come out of the same factory. Voliamart is a popular brand for kits. 4 of my friends are happy with them.

Yes! Go with a kit with a smaller battery and the price will be more friendly!

Hi! I have the Marlin 7 as well and just curious what the size of the battery and casing is? Looking at a kit at the moment and worried it'll be a very tight fit.

It’s a 17.5aH 48V battery pack made of Samsung 35E cells. Be sure to drill it as low as possible for the fit.

Hi there, really informative video but I just had a query about my own ebike that is also 1500w. See I have the torque arm on one side attached just like yours but under full load I've found that the axle slips out. Do you think that if I attached a torque on each side going upwards and secured it directly to the frame this issue would stop? I have a carrera just like yours just a different model but it too doesn't have massive dropouts and so sits very similar to yours in the frame. Would greatly appreciate any advice 👍🏻
@AaronsCreations
@AaronsCreations 3 года назад
Your mounting the torque arm incorrectly. One should be sufficient but not optimal. Follow my torque arm mounting configuration exactly and tighten your axle nuts down extremely tight.

Hi iwas planning to convert my bike to e bike do you think i can make it on my own?thanks
@AaronsCreations
@AaronsCreations 3 года назад
Absolutely. It depends on what kit and what frame you have. Some conversions are extremely simple as the frame the user choose was convenient enough to have high tolerance (lots of extra space). But specifically in my case I choose one of the worst frame to convert, as Trek makes high quality bikes with very low tolerances for a motor to fit in so as a result I was required to do some designing to make things work.

If your racing up the hill yes. If your going extremely slow say 5KPH it’s equally as bad. It’s hard to give you a definitive answer. But yes it can completely drain your battery or just a small amount. Hope that helps

Why not just take the spacer off the motor instead of relocating the brake caliper. I have the same frame and didn’t need to do half the work you did. I think you way over thought it. I converted my marlin in about 2hrs.
@AaronsCreations
@AaronsCreations Год назад
Because I used a cassette gear system. The hub would rub on the frame if spacers weren’t used

And to think I was about to go to a bike shop tomorrow and get a 1500w conversion kit installed on my Scott Aspect 940 granite mtb. You just made me realize how unreliable, complicated, expensive this all is and I don't have the confidence that the shop knows all of these tricks when installing it and they will just permanently ruin the bike and I will lose a ton of money. Yet again another thing that I find extremely interesting but a know it all RU-vidr ruins it for me. Not your fault ofc but there goes my initiative down the drain.
@connicrow9463
@connicrow9463 Год назад
Not as bad as it looks. Thousands bikers US Europe Asia have done it. Although they are neat -- you don't have to do custom wire controller boxes, bigger rear brake rotors and all that. A shop can do it professionally for under 3 hours $200. Or you can get online FB or CL see if any bike tech hobbyist enthusiasts will help you out for a good price.

So I looked at your video and the crank sensor will not fit onto your bike. As you mentioned in your video, it doesn't have a gap. But the sensor is mechanically simple, so if you can find a way to glue said sensor onto the rotating part of your bike, it should work. You can also look online for ways to get around this. I am sure there is a product for this problem.
