Today we are building a feed storage box. This plywood box will be large enough to hold 1000 pounds of livestock feed. It will be a secure place to protect the livestock feed from mice and other animals. We are placing the feed storage container in the livestock barn, where our feed storage room will be located.

Wrapping this box in hardware cloth would be a great upgrade.

Hello from the Netherlands . I know this comment comes much later, but still. to really be able to buy in bulk : take the right size pallet , screw a playwood plate between the reels so that it is close to the bottom , place the amount of pallet rings you need , place a lid on the top pallet ring . and ready you can now buy and store a complete pallet of feed at once and because of the pallet rings you have closed sides. and when you go lower in the pallet with your feed stock you can take off rings so you don't have to bend over in a box to get to the feed

I used to use a wooden feed storage bin. It was pretty large, and even though it was in the insulated tack room, the feed molded during the wet spring and fall months. I changed over to large metal garage cans and haven't had the mold problem. I suggest you either paint or line the inside with something to keep the moisture out.

Great build. I would look around for a gallon of paint or even left over sealant from the house build. Even though the box isnt out in the weather , the humidity and such could over time cause warping issues Could also check local paint stores for mixed paint they screwed up the shade on, Lowes for example will sell a $20 gal for $5 just to get their money out of it

I almost bought some paint, but I felt it was too cold for the paint to dry. So I may paint it later.

@@CountryViewAcres looking at the box I'd say that's a pretty easy job to knock out in under a hour . So you'd need a widow of approx 2-3 hrs when the temp was 45 or better

I loved watching the video, messing up the measurement on the box where the lid drops in brings back memories, like "Yes, I remember doing that myself a couple of times " . Same with the hinges , no mater how many you have laying around non will fit the project and when you do go out and buy some you still have to modify them to work. Thank you for putting videos on You Tube, I sure love watching them.

Longer hinge screws, with more meat than one layer of plywood offers. Laminate plywood or 2-by on inside to give long lasting support to hinges. Thx for your wonderful attitude regarding setbacks when building these simple projects, which always turn out to be less simple than we thought.

Evan, you need to add a couple different sized pneumatic staplers to your stash of tools. A 1 1/8” or a 1” stapler should be the right size for stapling cattle panels to posts. Much faster and easier than hammering and no more mashed fingers. If your compressor is too large to conveniently move around to support air tools for different jobs around the farm you can get a small air tank that holds 20-30 gallons capacity and just fill it and bring it to the work. Another option is to run some 1” or 1 1/2” schedule 40 PVC from the compressor to your other air storage tanks. An old 60- 80 gallon water heater that doesn’t leak is a great air accumulator. They can be found for free and most will hold up to 150-175 psi. Air tools are substantially cheaper than electric ones. 40 gallon tanks for water heaters is the most common size. If that’s what you end up with, just use several of them. They aren’t as durable as regular metal air tanks so it’s wise to stage them outside a few feet from your shop or barn so when they blow out the sudden change in air pressure doesn’t hurt you or an animals ears.

1/4 inch mesh hardware cloth and cover the entire bottom on the outside of the box, let the mesh run about 4 or 5 inches up all 4 sides and electrify it with a 12 volt power converter...excellent deterrent for rodents to stay out of the feed bags inside the storage box...lol
@afghanbunny1
@afghanbunny1 4 года назад
That looks very neat, but mice or rats will eat through it in no time. Galvanized garbage cans with TIGHT lids are the only way to keep rodents out of your feed.

That is what I had to do. A 20 gallon can will hold 2 bags. I guess a 30 gallon will hold 3 bags (maybe 4). As I buy the bags I pour them into the cans.
