In this video I go over designing and building a twin size bed with storage in the back of a 2019 Subaru Outback that folds away so you can still use the back seats.

I had no idea what you were describing. You were talking about things I could not see in video possibly because of the speed. I would definitely not be able to duplicate this.

thank you very much for this video. i was able to use this to help me build one of my own. i just returned from yosemite where i successfully slept in the back of my outback and drove with 4 people around the park!

This is perfect. One thing I'd like to add is rear slide out drawers that would hold things like stove, supplies, etc. The trick is then finding a way to support the top half of the platform.
@karlaart6971

This is the best bed mechanism I've seen yet! If I were to remake this I would not make the bed the full width. As you said I would leave room for a detachable table for work, or to put a stove on to cook from the outside
@MattBilsky
@MattBilsky 4 года назад
Thanks! An improvement I'd like to make to the folding out is that you need to clear everything off in the trunk before unfolding it. I'd have to make the hinged section detachable or something. But until then it's still working great

I need room for two for fishing trips, so this would be PERFECT! I think I'd try to work it out so it covers the space around the wheel wells, too, but this is an awesome design.

This is like EXACTLY what I've been seeking for. I want to travel in my 2000 outback that I got just about a week ago, and had an idea to do this, but yours is the first that I've seen that I like honestly. What is your advice on the back seat angles when they are folded down? My outback seats set down at a much greater angle than from what I can see in your video; that's the only thing I'm trying to work out before building. Honestly very cool!

Great video! I just bought the last 2019 Outback that my city had on the lot. Great financing. I too would love to build your bed. I don't intend to sleep in it often but it's nice when you want to take that one weekend trip but don't want to sleep in a tent. Awesome job guys!

I end up keeping it in the car all the time because I keep the drawers stocked with all the random things you always seem to need places (paper plates, jumper cables, cups, etc.)

How snug is the mattress? I am getting a 5th gen (2016) tomorrow and wanting to see if I could put in a mattress on the platform that was a twin xl instead of a twin (78x38 instead of 75x35). That looks pretty snug as it is. Awesome video and build work. Thanks!
@MattBilsky
@MattBilsky 4 года назад
I think that should be fine. I believe the minimum width is 42 inches. There is a couple inches on the side of my current mattress. You could easily lengthen the folding arms to support the longer xl. I have to slide the front seats up but there is easily 3 inches to spare in that direction. Just bring a tape to double check the measurements at the dealer haha

@MattBilsky
@MattBilsky 3 года назад
It's hard to have the mattress in the car with 4-5 in the car. It fits in the trunk but doesn't leave much room for stuff. If I need extra room I'll sleep on my Paco pad (best air mattress for camping, available from NRS). It rolls up smaller

@MattBilsky
@MattBilsky 4 года назад
I haven't had to be off grid too long. When I was on my 8 week trip I used public libraries for charging and getting work done. I was considering some sla batteries (I have a few large ones laying around) but haven't had time to rig up a charger that's car powered. Or you can use solar. I would charge and dry ski boots using an inverter while driving. And simple phone battery packs for the rest

Great work. Very interesting and smart. Just wondering though, why even make the bed platform? It looks like the seats fold down flat. Isn’t it just taking up unnecessary space? Couldn’t you just carry the mattress and lay it flat across the back and folded seats when needed?
@Dbcooper581
@Dbcooper581 4 года назад
The seat fold down relatively flat, your still at and angle and there’s a ridge where the seat fold, even with a mattress you can still feel this and it’s pretty uncomfortable. Building the platform allows you to have a flat sleeping surface along With some extra storage space

@MattBilsky

For which part of the build? The majority of the screws were drywall screws in the 1.5"-2.5" range. For the small hardware I used the included screws and filed down the tips as needed.
@foresterboy2011
@foresterboy2011 4 года назад
What ever thickness materials you're using then double that less 6mm then that's the size screws you need so when counter sinking the screws they won't protrude. If you're fixing a plank/board to the depth of the materials then you can use longer screws as there's no chance of exposure from pointed end of screws. Hope this helps...
