I went to a metal gig back in the 80s (I can't remember the name of the band but it was one of the NWOBHM bands). Their gimmick was that the lead guitarist had the biggest pedal board in the industry. It was a wooden plank about 15 feet long and packed with pedals. Half way through the gig the guitarist went silent. An 'invisible' roadie crawled into the stage, plugged the guitarist straight into his amp and 'unobtrusively' dragged the plank off stage. About 20 minutes later the 'invisible' roadie reappeared dragging the same 15 foot plank back but now with only two pedals on it, plugged the guitarist back in and 'unobtrusively' crawled off the stage. It was one of the funniest things that I'd ever seen at a metal gig.

The less the better for me. Tuner, Wa, whammy, boost, and a good delay with tap tempo. BUT if I came into Glenn's studio I'd have a splitter box so Glenn and company can get a dry signal for re-amping, see I listen.

I agree. I used to run a lot of effects pedals, but a couple years ago I got a Boss Katana and I was able to significantly downsize my setup. Now my board consists of the foot controller to change channels and effects for my amp, and the only external pedals I use are a wah, whammy, overdrive/boost, noise suppressor, and tuner

Me too I used to run a heap of pedals but now I'm down to just a splitter box that bypasses everything to go direct to recording, a tuner a tube screamer a wha a tremolo a volume boost a flanger a chorus, digital delay, analogue delay, a fuzz face a Rat a ds1, a vocoder, octaver a graphic EQ and a parametric eq and that's it really oh and a DI speaker emulator pedal and a plate reverb pedal going into a digital reverb pedal into a looper pedal, di pedal and then a splitter to go direct or to an amp. Yep that's it. So much easier now.

First mistake: all of your pedals that require stomping action are on top row and the one pedal that has no stomp is in front row alone with the the wah. Next mistake: no tuner. Not like we use em anyway but ya gotta have one or you'll get heckled. Total bass player moves. From a typical narcissistic ego maniac (guitar player): Move the CAB above the wah where it's out of the way and put your boosts and drives front row (where the CAB is) so you can switch em on the fly easily. Otherwise awesome, hope you had a good time building it. I know I did my first pedal board.

Glen, a nice tip I received for wanting to velcro a pedal without marking it up. Take some blue painters tape put it on the bottom of the pedal with a little tab sticking out - then velcro ontop of the painters tape. When you are ready to remove it will come off clean with no residual gunk. May not be as strong but still better than nothing!

pedalboards are such a rabbit hole! Liked the design, seemed very usable and the option to mount a built in power supply is a winner... I'm still using my plywood and carpet diy models and a leftover IKEA rail style, but this would be a contender if i was looking to upgrade. I tend to leave wah pedals off the board but that is purely personal. Solid first build, my only other suggestions would be a tuner pedal and a volume pedal, but like cabbage rolls, there are as many "ideal" pedalboard setups as there are grandmothers. good to see the process.

With all of the confusing wiring of pedalboards along with my health issues I have I just moved to an Axe-FX that runs into a Matrix power amp and out to my 4x12 cab. One hell of a lot easier with cabling, no pedal dance, all solid state and sounds just as good as my Peavey ValveKing with pedals, (to me). Makes it one hell of a lot easier to play shows, move equipment on and off stage and less connections to give me issues in the middle of a song. Might not be for everyone but it fits me perfectly!! 😁

*CLEARLY this is your first pedalboard build. Cables floppin' all over the place, all switchable pedals on the top row, and the cockblocker above the wah. Good first try never the less! Tips from me (hopefully not the butthurt of the week): 1) When using the wah, you will probably hit the cockblocker switch with your toe. And... enabling the cockblocker when you want to, you will find the wah is in the way. 2) make a good decision on what side of the vecro goes on the board. I always put the soft side on the board to prevent dirt from sticking to it, and you can vacuum the board clean easily. The rough side goes underneath the pedals. 3) get a small board! Most of us play small stages. A board that is 30x40cm REALLY is enough. You dont need 5 drive or distortion pedals on there. Keep it simple! That will help your tone and keep the board more stable. (Nobody wants to troubleshoot before or during a gig) 4) maybe raise the pedals that are further away to prevent hitting any knobs or switches on pedals that are under your feet while switching on another pedal. 5) POWER SUPPLY IS KING. I know...: "but i can fit two more pedals without the PS, i'll just daisy-chain all pedals together". Yes, but you will have sooo much hum and other issues. Believe me, you PS will be your FAVORITE "pedal". The power supply you are using is looking fantastic and solves a lot of problems! Way to go! Thanks Glenn for the AWESOME show, and fuck you!

Glenn, Fun video. I know you’re probably not going to put Velcro on the back of your last CockBlocker, but you can use blue painters tape to cover the back of the CockBlocker, then stick the Velcro to the painters tape to protect the finish of the pedal. Fold a little tab of tape to make it easier to grab and pull off when you no longer want the Velcro on the pedal. I think I saw this painter’s tape hack on Phil McKnight’s channel.

If they gave you patch cables they'd be the wrong size. They are easy to make and you can make them the length you need so you avoid extra gross cable around your board. Also, it'd be a good addition for you to drop in a patchbay so you can plug into one section instead of going into the c-blocker and the Two Notes and the other pedal for your 4 cable method, plus the DI out.

I build my pedalboards - i like the bass of the mic stand (Hercules) to fit snug under the board so my mic is dead center to my board, so I build them with a open channel underneath. Its a platform on each side, then a second top tier holds it all together. My board is used for the bass guitar so it goes as follows: G30 wireless into volume/tuner/compressor/EQ/octave/big muff pi/chorus/sansamp DI. Almost never run two pedals at the same time and its pretty easy to dial everything in without major volume changes - FOH is always really happy with my signal chain and I have them take the DI off the back of my amp (which is finely compressed by the amps dual band circuitry) - sometimes I’ll take the DI off the sansamp, but mostly I use the amps Di I use the sansamp for recording a lot - gets a great sound into the board and always cuts through the track. I’m using those smaller voodoo labs (I think, its mounted underneath and out of sight) power supply… its all small enough and manageable and rarely needs maintenance!

Seems like a great idea and a product from Palmer. I believe that a small suggestion like printing the voltage on the top of the rail over the outputs would improve the usability of the power supply in certain occasions. Also, creating a power supply and a patch bay combo in one unit would be a great product in my book!

Best value power supply I've found which seems to cover every voltage option I've come across is the Harley Benton range of power supplies. They have a few outlets which switch between 8v, 12v & 18v and with 1 amp instead of the usual 500mA so it'll run even a power hungry tube preamp pedal.

I suggest you put an amp channel footswitch into that spot on the board which is still empty. These Palmer boards are amazing, super stable and easy to customize. I got a pedalbay 80 which I've hacked quite a bit to have a second level for the upper row, some always-on pedals strapped underneath to save space, some protection for the jacks, a hidden input/output patchbay and (yeah I know...guitar players...) Since the rest have stomp buttons, it's OK to stack them on top of each other because it's easy to tap the top ones with your shoe tip without accidentally tapping a bottom row pedal. Hey Glenn, you should check out the awesome guitar pedal series by EHX, called the 9 series. They're essentially multi effects pedals that turn your guitar sound into the sounds of vintage organs, pianos, synths and mellotron orchestrations, depending on which one you get. I have my Mel9, which makes the guitar sound like orchestral mellotron sounds, such as strings, choirs, woodwinds and brass. They're really cool for layering with your guitar sounds to add drama and suspense in your sound. The organ ones are also cool since they give the sounds of pipe organs, good for doom metal, or hammond organs, good for Deep Purple style sounds. If you ever try them, you should show us how to mix them within a fast metal mix, since mixing them can be challenging, especially with the mellotron one I have.
@edgarwalk5637

@AnkothOfficial
@AnkothOfficial 2 года назад
@@edgarwalk5637 Ypu should get one! They're not that expensive, depending on where you buy it from and which one you buy, and what you buy it with. Here on the UK, I paid £168 for the mel9, which gave me the mellotron sounds. With other currencies they can cost slightly more, and also off some sites (the most I saw the Mel9 sold for was £240, I believe). Honestly in all scenarios you get the same product, so it's just down to surfing the web and finding a site that will sell them for cheaper. The 9 series also has the Bass9, which I forgot to mention, which is a octave pedal, that tunes your guitar down by an octave and gives you a bass guitar sound, and likewise you can use it to get the sound of different bass instruments, such as a double bass, different bass guitars or synth bass. So if you have all the other 9 series pedals, the Bass9, a looper, a drum machine/sequence, the EHX harmony pedal, and a Mimiq pedal, you can essentially become a one man band with just your guitar and a drum sequencer/drum machine. That's actually much better than "desktop metal" since it gives you a more organic sound, since it comes from your guitar. The only thing that might be difficult is getting programmed/machine drums to sound organic, however you can also invest in a cajon and a twin effect bass pedal and a regular single pedal. You can use the twin pedal to hit the cajon on the bass area, with some heel toe to get both mallets moving, to get double bass, and the single pedal for your other foot can be used to hit the cajon at the snare area and get a snare sound, and you can also use the green machine design with the single pedal and some cable hats, to get the heel portion of the pedal to be a high hat.

Cool video. It reminds me why I only use a Klon for a slight boost or to push the front end at lower volumes.

Nice little pedal rig Glenn 🤘🏾 Only thing I have to say is that running your delay (or other time based effects) into the gate because it will clip off the final repeats. Keep up the great work Sir!

For the pedals, put blue painters tape on the backs first, then the Velcro - keeps the backs of them clean.

"CockBlocker a collectors item".. YES sir it pretty much is. A very nice collectors item. It is serving my collectors pedal shelf well.

Ergonomically, I put the pedals that you don't need to touch furthest away. Cockblocker and Two-Notes on the top row, everything else on the bottom row so you're not stepping over those two to get to the ones you actually step on.

Awesome build and great video! As a bit of a pedalboard nerd I gotta say pedalboards never really come with patch cables. I guess the way you would wire up your board is just too specific per set up.

This video though not technically relevant to me (not my type of board or pedal collection), this is a type of content I find myself searching for often. I love pedal videos and I enjoyed this one. I'm pretty sure I speak for most of us on this channel when I say, I'd love to see more content with pedals included. I mean as an engineer, we see pedals ALL THE TIME. I guess it can be considered as part of the process.

Also a quick note about that useless velcro like stuff they always send with the pedal boards. Ditch it. 3M dual lock is what you want get the clear tape, it won't leave black gunk on the pedals. If your aim is to make sure they can stay on a board even if a mosh pit front of stage kinda spills over this stuff will mostly do that. Spills over, if it pours over your board is getting stomped until you make them get off it and nothing will keep all of it on on the board. Thank Crom they are connected by cables too. Not so much for Glenn but more for the guys and gals doing this the first or fifth time for their party or show boards.

You should have put the two notes behind the wah, you don't activate it and you don't have to worry about almost turning on/off the blocker.

Glen! Speaking of pedals. When recording DI signal to be reamped in a studio, but the riffs rely on pedals like Whammy, Freqout, etc. - should the DI signal still be just straight and the studio engineer somehow recreates the pitch shifts and stuff, or is the pedal at this point an extension of the instrument itself (like a physical whammy bar would be) and capturing is a part of the musician's performance that the DI signal should already include? On one hand DI is supposed to be just guitar with nothing adder, but making the studio engineer recreate the modulations feels off... I know that things like autowah exist for studio engineers to program to recreate that part of the performance (and possibly improve it/make it more accurate)... But still what about then things like vitrual jeff pro, or sustainiac model C? Is that like a pedal, outside DI, or is it a part of an instrument that gets captured on DI? What about effects like Univibe that by definition are always going to sound different with each use and will never be reproducible to get the exact same thing out of them? They're simulators of the unstable sound communist radio from Moscow would have when received on a small radio in Japan when weather was nice enough for the radio waves to bounce off the stratosphere and reach that far... Is that effect meant to be a part of the performance captured in the DI or the studio engineer should apply it when ramping and stuff? I would say that tools/pedals like Virtual Jeff Pro/Whammy or Sustainiac model C/freqout should be included in the DI signal as a part of the performance (they're meant to be at the beginning of the signal anyway), but univibe is best used near the end of the signal chain so the studio engineer should use it despite it's irreproducible nature. What do you think, where is the border between what would be considered a part of the instrument/performance to be captured in the DI, and what is considered to be alterations to the signal to be handled by the engineer?

Check on that Poontang Boomerang. I dunno how much they're going for now since there's only one listed on eBay for $1k and none on Reveb, but I sold mine for around $500 over a year ago and sold my P-Melter for around the same price to the same guy

I just use an all in one effects board, best investment i ever made. Over time my tastes, wants and needs changed and its nice not haveing to expirement 100 bucks at a time and lossing money selling old pedals. Note i bought a pod hd500 used for 200 bucks about 4 years ago

Just a side note and an example of why sound engineers need to know how to teach musicians to play their instruments or use their equipment. Many years ago I was oing punk rock matine shows every Sunday. One of the bands, entirely of teenagers approached me to ask if they could drop out. When I asked why the guitarist who was genuinely embarrassed stated he forgot his distortion pedal. This kid's parents bought him a pretty nice Mesa head, SOOO I said "hey you're playing punk, let me show you something", had him plug in and I walked over to the amp and started to crank the gain and adjusted the EQ. Low and behold this kid's face lit up like I just shit out the ghost of Sid Vicious right there. He was cised, able to to play the show and sounding way better than the POS Boss distortion pedal he cried about not having. Not bashing pedals but sometimes the knowing the basics goes so much further.
