04:15 A surprisingly large number of SPGs (especially WW2 era) were simply an extended version of an already existing chassis such as on the medium tanks and obsolete tanks of that war. This means a medium tank only larger and without the turret and thicker armour makes absolute sense, just take a look at the American M-12 SPG and you shall see!

17:09 Two things I shall note. Number one is the ammunition right behind the flack-shield doesn't seem feasible due to the crew being right behind (traditionally the gunner on one side and commander on the other). Number two I believe that the ammunition would be stored with the fuse-side upwards rather than the warhead as it's easier to grasp.

Hey patch, don’t know if you know this but when extruding edges points and faxes you can press Ctrl + Z,Y or X to fix the extension in a certain direction

I propose the next time you build an artillery vehicle, you build a second vehicle to go alongside with it to act as a munitions tractor.

There is a spg in german tech tree that is exactly like this, that is also used as an anti tank.

Now my main concern is stabilisers, since I used to mount entire turrets on top of small cubes; the small cubes provided fast traverse and that iconic stabiliser ‘snap’ when you stop traversing. Maybe you could have turret baskets on top of these cubes for horizontal stabilisation. i’ll have to figure out how to vertically traverse Edit: nevermind, you can still use separate turrets for traverse, it needs more than 1 crew member to operate efficiently however.

Great video as always! It's interesting to see how other "Sprocketeers" are doing things in their order. Myself is always focusing in function and performance first, wich is tested many times under the time of design. When everything is fited in and work as intended I make the final form and size. But my tanks does not look as good as yours. Details I have thougths about: It's important to have a radio operator in a SPG. You can put that task on the commander, but here you have room in the hull for a dedicated operator. I would not have placed the commander (or anyone in the crew) right behind the gun. I would have placed the commander behind the gunner, who I think should be sitting. I would also have the turret ring as big as possible.

Looking forward to when you do actually crank the gun size as far as you realistically can and make something dicker max adjacent. Open top SPG’s are my favorite

Love your recent videos, personally waiting for the geometrics to be out of alpha before I really try it out. Also ngl the awfully thin tracks and the sheer amount of empty space inside. The side stowage looked like it begged for some ammo to be put in it. Also realistically, you really don't get any empty space inside a tank beyond ehat crew are gonna need to move around. Engines and transmissions usually take up more space too, you seem to have been making rather small transmissions, which to my knowledge are more prone to breaking in game. Though also the game is lacking some things that'd be taking uo space inside a vehicle like radiators or radios.

Do the vechicles you build in the beta go into the main game when the update comes out?

Loving your stuff, been waiting so patiently for Hamish to cook up arguably the best free update to a game ever. I'm wondering if you would be interested in / willing to make a "tank design 101" sort of video where you go over the shorthand techniques and hotkeys that you use while you work? I can generally get Freeform v2 to cooperate better than the non-experimental build, but I have so much trouble getting things to look decent and I feel it's because there's a particular schmism that I'm missing as far as editor technique. Even a blow-by-blow of, for instance, all the keypresses and manipulations you make starting at about 9:16 for the turret? Things like holding Shift and selecting all the roof faces, then dragging them up, to raise the height of all of them at the same time I understand, but the number of edge splits and movements and welds you go on to do making the turret face is tough for me to follow in fast-forward. If you were to make a video like this, frankly the closer to "idiot-proof" you tried to make it the better, I think (certainly for me personally) - dumbing things down and explaining *every* step would be useful to see, to get a feel for how and why the Freeform experts do what they do. In any event, I loved the video! Seeing a sort of "90% replica" where you take an existing concept and then do your own thing is fun to watch!

my only complaint about the 'human tetris' bit is that the hitboxes are huge. i get they're simplified and whatnot but it makes things a bit harder than they would be trying to cram a crew into a tank irl

I think for an SPG this has way too little ammo and I imagine the space where a bow machine gunner would be is a great spot for some more

When making custom mantlets put the custom one first the and the premade one onto the custom one and then restrict the movement of the premade one

Wow last week i build an German like SPG turret on my Pz III like hull. i based it on the Sfl IV b but with a 155mm Gun instead of the 105mm.

I just had an idea for a tank. an asymmetrical 40 ton open top tank destroyer with the main gun being off-set to the side

really cool tank! :D sorta looks like some last ditch effort by the Germans to reuse old Panzer 2 hulls and fit on self destroying 120 mm howitzers onto them.. and if i remember they might have done that exact treatment to some other poor light thank chassis.. XD
