Building A Gonk Droid | Part 2 

"Kindness, is another way of building something out of nothing" That is..... remarkable. Bravo!

Man, I’ve got to get some skills built up so I can justify owning a laser cutter. The production value it adds to these builds is unmatched.

I am thankful for you both. I'm a big Star Wars fan and was not allowed to "play with my dolls" at an early age. I'm 50 now and the kid that loved Star wars is still here. It's great to know I'm not alone.

Just rewatched this as I made up this little boy's story. It begun as an average Gonk in a modest speeder workshop in Corellia, providing electricity for the power tools. The owner needed more efficient ways to work but had a low budget, so he bought some astromech components and integrated them in the Gonk. Now it is able to diagnose the speeders and quickly find the problems that need to be fixed and communicate them in binary language. The workshop owner is saving a lot of time, he can repair more speeders than before and he has even lowered his fees. He lives in a small community composed by people who work hard for a living and he prefers being helpful than being rich. The gonk is way more sentient than before and it is happy and he feels appreciated. A small story in a huge galaxy, but small stories are the bricks with which history is built.

I wish you were a house designer on a show on HGTV. And then you and a whole team convert entire houses in SciFi style. 😊👍 Your craftsmanship and ingenuity are always so impressive

Love it! Building it to be able to service it is something way too many people forget. When I built my K-9 I made sure I could easily remove parts and unplug components quickly. Three screws and two Cat 5 plugs and his head pops right off. As Bob Barker used to say "make sure you can fix your pets and droids" or something like that. :D

Boy have you got my creative juices flowing with this build. I constantly find myself thinking about what I would do if I had the time/equipment to make a proper power droid. Anxiously awaiting part 3.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who likes to glue PCB's down in my projects using hot glue! :D

Have you guys ever used the projector eye as an actual projector? That would be an awesome home projector setup!

You should make a roomba that looks like a mouse droid. That would also be functional and awesome! I like how the gonk is coming along!

Gonk Droid Part 1 is what brought me to the channel, I can't wait to see it finished.

What's crazy about this project is you guys could have built a big Gonk with an empty center and we would have all loved it, but then you upped the ante by creating an interior...that's some next level stuff and amazing to see!

ReGONKulus! That's coming out real nice. I like the hinge idea and now know the way I can fix that when I get to that project. Right now is my very own Pit Droid, woo hoo!

When I was studying physics (my major) in college, I had a British professor that taught electrostatics (2 part course). Brilliant man. There were 8 of us in the class and we looked for opportunities to get fun to say aluminum. He figured it out after a while but it was still fun because we didn't give up LOL! Love that man

Lookin' good as always! Just an update, I'm playing the role of FB marketplace junk dealer right now gathering up parts, greeblies, and assemblies for the basement I mentioned a while back. I linked up with a guy who owns a 3D printer, and we found out there's a makerspace down the road too! I'm gonna try to reach out via email as I'm hoping to ask a few questions and share a few ideas if you've got time for it. We love you guys! You're doing great work! Absolutely awesome build. SO many great idea to ummmm borrow.. for my own lol You talk about projects getting away from you, mine still essentially 2 tubs in the corner of the shop.. But even when I'm not building, my eyes are always watching for greeblies.

I love it when you are unscripted, it's so much more natural and watchable than the "presented" feel.

I love the face, it's more complex than we are used to see on gonks and it really gives it a personality. It feels like we could have a conversation.

great project, though I might suggest having a look at car door hinges, they are designed to swing doors out away front the bodywork :-)

I think parts of my brain just melted a bit. Thinking about how you came up with the hinge structure explains some of the struggle you’ve been dealing with. I’m sure there were other solutions possible, but what you came up with is very Brian. Massive kudos to you. Love these builds, they give me satisfaction seeing master's of their craft "build something out of nothing". I work 10-12 hour days so I can't really have a hobby so videos like these help, till I can find time to start. So thanks guys and stay safe

The gonk is coming along nicely. I am glad you went over the trials and tribulations you had along the way.

A pop-up 120 volt outlet tower, intended to be installed under a kitchen counter, might have been a better choice to put into the Gonk. That way the outlet can be accessed without needing to take his top off. Otherwise, a really neat build.

Awesome build. Your build videos always give me ideas for other stuff I'm working on. On those boards that you used hot glue to mount, they do have holes for standoffs and the standoffs are really cheap. I used to mount boards with hot glue and then I had to replace one once. I don't know about painted MDF but the hot glue is annoying to pull off later off of the wood that I've used. Thanks for always posting awesome content and happy thanksgiving.

I couldn't really tell in the video, but those lugs on your power access point should work with female crimp connectors. Would save you all that soldering and they are already insulated.

Aluminimum-and um.....LOL two words for the GONK lids, Linear Actuators (to make it work (push down on the knees of the hinges...), had another thought put a bluetooth speaker in there too, 'Alexa what is plugged into GONK, how long will it take to charge....)

I know this sounds tedious and kinda unnessisary, but you should replace all the english text on the controls with Aurebesh! That would totaly bring this build to the next level!

18:46 Considering the nature of your builds, and how that hole in the power plug turned out, it might be worth making an aluminium (I'm a Brit) face plate for that plug, to make it a little more prominent. That way, you'll have a little more to hold it securely in place. Look forward to Part 3.
