So are chipmunks. I watched in shock as a chipmunk snatched an injured field mouse that was dropped by a stray cat near my porch. The mouse wasn't dead yet but this chipmunk started crunching it's skull. (I will never forget that noise) So I called my 82 yr old father and asked him and he remembered watching a chipmunk eat the head of a bluejay while sitting on the bird feeder.

10:11 fun fact - bone chewing in herbivores is pretty common! It's scientific name is Osteophagy! herbies will mostly do so if they're mineral-deprived; the bones provide essential nutrients, such as Calcium, phosphorus and a bit of sodium.

So a couple things about what is actually recommended for OBTs: The enclosure size and front opening is fine but the screen top can actually be bad for them, they can get their toes stuck. The light is unnecessary and potentially a problem in excessive heat and lighting, you'll barely see the spider as is, the light will just scare it. Ambient temperature and light should be fine. I would also give them more substrate towards the back so that they can burrow more.
@cadaverousghoul8008
@cadaverousghoul8008 3 года назад
I agree you want to make kind of a slope at the back to allow the T to have a deeper burrow and replace that mesh top with ventilated cut to fit plastic other than that it looks pretty amazing!
@amberdawn0011
@amberdawn0011 3 года назад
Agreed. No light, more substrate. Also, obt's don't kick hairs because old worlds don't have urticating hairs
@kadoceleritus
@kadoceleritus 3 года назад
Two things here. Firstly, that mesh top on the enclosure is a safety hazard. Terrestrial and fossorial tarantulas are particularly at risk of getting their claws trapped in the pinch points between the wires, as they are ill-suited to keeping a solid footing while extracting the stuck limb. This can lead to a loss of limbs, or a fall that can potentially injure the abdomen. Exo terra enclosures are pretty easy to swap the mesh on. Acrylic or polycarbonate sheet stock is easy to swap in. The tricky part is, if they're in the enclosures you need to swap the lid on, you need some sort of temporary lid in the mean time while your silicone cures. edit: You need lots of ventilation drilled in your lid material, especially as these enclosures have somewhat limited ventilation on the front, and this would be to replace mesh, which has maximum airflow. Secondly, the OBT will need more than its diagonal legspan in burrowing depth. While it's true that giving them less substrate will cause them to web more visibly, it also is a major contributing factor to stress that will make the animal more defensive. I have an obt in over twice its legspan of soil. You can only see webs at the entrance to the burrow, but it has never threat posed, and when startled, goes right into its burrow where it feels secure. Without adequate substrate depth, it's almost like the whole enclosure becomes the burrow, and so removing the lid or opening the door is perceived as a threat to the burrow. If I were doing this enclosure, I would suggest swapping out the foam background for zoo med cork tiles (much thinner, you'll have another inch of useful space inside), and to slope the soil upwards in the back almost to the lid. This is a very attractive build. With the soil level where it is now, though, this would be a better setup for a Greenbottle Blue (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens), which relies less on burrowing to feel secure and safe. I'm excited to see what you all do for your invert wall at your zoo. Larger enclosures for tarantulas, so long as you mitigate fall risk for large-bodied ground-dwelling Ts, can lend to more varied and natural behaviors being on display. I highly recommend, as you're filing out those enclosures, pick species that will have between four and eight times their legspan in space to roam in whatever directions are relevant to their lifestyles. There are many dwarf species that can be fantastic for display, and I definitely think a communal of something like Heterothele villosella would be eye catching. Of course, if you want to wow everyone and you have a massive enclosure available, a Monocentropus balfouri communal can be life-changing to witness. If you do any of those, though, you gotta find sibling slings that have never been separated from one another. Anyway, best of luck and have a great Halloween!

@journeybisset5549
@journeybisset5549 3 года назад
I can second this. Tarantulas can loose limbs to mesh lids but another risk is them chewing through mesh. Dani is also correct in that more substrate will make them feel more secure and less likely to bolt and injure themselves. For most terrestrials, it is recommended not to give more than 1.5x DLS as falls from higher can rupture their abdomen. I highly recommend checking out Tom Moran (ru-vid.com/show-UCAlaq0mRpx4nTqPgTFVzxxQ as he touches on this a few times, as well as providing good husbandry advice and is knowledgeable about most species. For faster moving species and all OW I would recommend his method of cupping the tarantula then transferring it, rather then just coaxing it along. I know you said this fella has a good disposition but as someone who had to chase their P. ornata all over the house its something that I would try and avoid. Cant wait to check out the Invert wall!! Keep up the good work.

Regarding Hannibal climbing the glass: my understanding is that spider feet (which, close up, are adorable kitten paws) have tufts of densely packed hair which produce the same dry stickiness effect that geckos use. It's essentially electrostatic attraction. If you've ever felt the weird stickiness of a microfibre cloth, it's the same stuff. Weirdly, my two jumping spiders, which life in a plastic enclosure, have a lot of trouble sticking to the sides and tend to slowly slide down the plastic if they don't keep moving...

I was watching Tom's Big Spider vids, and he's raising his OBT as a fossorial rather than a terrestrial - a burrowing set up. I'm following in his footsteps as a science experience, and so far my OBT has been an Orange Beautiful Thing. :) Still wouldn't handle him, but it's an interesting experiment! This is especially true watching the webbing - when you open the tank, and you ruin the webbing, it's essentially ripping the roof off of their house, which causes them to go immediately on the defense. :O

I love OBTs but am terrified to own one. I only own new worlds. 😅 Small Edit: For anyone curious, I own a titicatal albopilosum (curly hair). I used to own an avicularia avicularia (pink toe) and a monocentropus balfouri (Socotra island blue baboon). So I have owned an old world, but it didn't have medically significant venom. Well, at least based on the research I did

Needs way more substrate. They only make their home above the surface if they don’t have enough depth to properly burrow.

Some species don’t need to burrow though. I don’t think this one does. (Quick research, I’ve found they wil burrow but it’s not as common as webbing.)
@catt0009
@catt0009 3 года назад
OBTs actually prefer above ground webbing! They will burrow sometimes, but its significantly more common for them to make surface homes! But love that you were worried about the tarantula enough to make this comment. :)
@CarolineForest
@CarolineForest 3 года назад
how about not assuming all spiders need the same, and realizing different species have different requirements. Like snakes.. Milksnakes likes to burrow and will be happier with a deeper substrate than.. for example a green tree python who would need way more climbing space than a milkshake (tho milksnakes also sometimes likes to climb, but they need much less) same with tarantulas. Some needs more than others. BUT: its good that you care about the well being of animals. Its important to care

Jumping spider tip- the holes in animal vertebrae are a great size for jumping spider homes! Just put it up top with a dab of glue. I just got a handful of bones at a spooky festival and have been enjoying adding them to enclosures :D Just be sure they're cleaned and don't have any residual chemicals depending how they were cleaned. I don't think I'd do human bones... they're too big for my enclosures anyway. Animal bones are more interesting. My GBB just molted again and I'm looking forward to giving them a bigger enclosure! But I'm not looking forward to rehousing them... Jumping spiders are so much easier to rehome.
