My friend Jim Carlton is one of the most creative people that I know. This is a 3 minute recap of his project to create a horseless carriage from scratch. Since this short video compresses five hours of hand-held video into a few minutes, it is a bit jumpy. For the entire 2 hour video that takes you from the beginning of the project to the first ride, go to • Building a Horseless C... .

I always loved those horseless carriage style cars. They have a style to them that modern cars can't seem to beat

¡Gracias Marin! Mi amigo Jim hace cosas increíbles. He visto tus videos de Mérida. Estuve allí hace 15 años con mi esposa. Tiene algunas de las mejores ruinas romanas fuera de Roma.

Fantastic, but it's a certain model of the past, or pure invention?

Jim's vehicles are constructed with as much authenticity as possible, in that he tries to use materials and design aesthetics that are true to the era. His creations are not necessarily exact duplicates of a particular vehicle, but perhaps inspired by specific vehicles of an era, and he either finds actual period components or makes them from scratch. We are working on the video of his latest build, which is based on the Benz Patent Wagon No. 3 from 1888. Stay tuned!

@@woodepgh Thanks, it's a incredible project and work, I'm drawing a brass era cars for build it in 1:20 scale in wood and brass, at the moment i have designed a Ford Model N, I'm from Italy and don't speak a correct english, but i love american brass era cars, sometimes easier to build than contemporary european early '900 cars.

I am an owner of a Reproduction 1901 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, and without favcy Fast Forwards , Believe me, I have built several and I am a Wood Craftsman, and just cutting the fash and molding that take a lot longer than a few minutes, Can you drive your car from Oregon to Missouri or even California? If you can I will accompany you back home in mine and we can travel up Interstate 5 or 395. And we will leave from Redding, Ca,

An interesting and confusing comment, but here is a reply from Jim: "I have to respectfully decline the invitation to drive it those lengths…my solid rubber tires would probably grind down to the metal rims half way there while riding the shoulder at fifteen mph or so."

But how do you get these road legal?

I am not an expert on this, but Jim's vehicles are constructed with as much authenticity as possible, in that he tries to use materials and design aesthetics that are true to the era. His creations are not necessarily exact duplicates of a particular vehicle, but perhaps inspired by specific vehicles of an era, and he either finds actual period components or makes them from scratch. Making such a vehicle "road legal" would detract from the whole purpose of building the vehicles in the first place. In fact, it would be totally impractical to actually drive these vehicles in modern traffic, except possibly in a parade or to a parking spot in a car show. I know that each state has regulations governing licensing of antique cars, but in my brief research, I couldn't find anything that referred to vehicles such as Jim's - which are not actual antiques, but are crafted with a combination of antique and custom made parts.
