Something that's not commonly recognised with timber houses is that they promote good health as they can breathe,if you go from a timber to a brick house the difference in atmosphere is quite noticeable. Looks like a great bit of land you've got there. Something that surprised me in the UK that is completely opposite to NZ is the price of land relative to the distance from town,the UK prices in the countryside is eye watering in comparison.
@ItsaDrama
@ItsaDrama 3 года назад
You know that's such a good point. Yes, you're right... If you want to live in the country in the UK (or talking about England) you will pay an absolute premium - here is the opposite. Thanks so much for the reminder and as always, thanks so much or watching! 😁

We are Kiwis living in Oz and you make us miss home so much. Oz and NZ are so different with Oz having all the reptiles, spiders and bugs that kill you. Compare that with NZ where you can fall asleep in the long grass and be as safe as.. Love your channel so much and you both "crack us up!!!" Glad you love Aotearoa so much, seeing and appreciating it the same way we do.

Did you continue renting while the house was being built, you said that the rental was almost up at the beginning of the video so just wondering what you did? The cost is less building but then you are renting and paying a bond surely.. ? Did u bring things from the UK and if so where did you store the things while renting and building?

Back in the day the houses were built of the materials available, there was plenty of wood from the native forests that were being cleared to farm on that was used to build houses and the wooden houses have continued to be built

The biggest wooden building in the southern hemisphere is in Wellington. I'm not sure but it might be the 2nd biggest in the world. If you haven't seen it it's on Lambton Quay across the road from Parliament.

New Zealand was trashed environmentally back in the settler days with pests and more pests to control the first pests. Did anything work? Nope! Thug companies like the "New Zealand Company" ripped people off as well as the land. The destruction was apocalyptic with massive fires from all whom "developed." Drained wetlands.
@Mcfreddo
@Mcfreddo 3 года назад
This is from the NZ government: "Around 1000 AD, before humans arrived in New Zealand, forest covered more than 80% of the land. The only areas without tall forests were the upper slopes of high mountains and the driest regions of Central Otago. When Māori arrived, about 1250-1300 AD, they burnt large tracts of forest, mainly on the coasts and eastern sides of the two main islands. By the time European settlement began, around 1840, some 6.7 million hectares of forest had been destroyed and was replaced by short grassland, shrubland and fern land. Between 1840 and 2000, another 8 million hectares were cleared, mostly lowland or easily accessible conifer-broadleaf forest. By 2000 New Zealand had only 6.2 million hectares of native forest. Most of it was on mountainous land and was dominated by southern beech."

We bought a place that was 90% of what we wanted, and finally our dream plot (completely undeveloped, big project) just came available. We heard during covid the prices of building materials were making it more expensive to build than to buy an existing house. We heard those prices might come down but they haven't seemed to.

Can you do all the work yourselves there? Like is that allowed or are there really hard permits and codes to follow. I just built my house last year with my father and sister. I had never built one before but they had, I learned a lot as I was in charge of electrical and a lot of the framing and everything. My sister and I designed it and she drew the plans. The only things we hired out were the foundation and the drywall because we hate drywalling. Building our house was the only way we could afford to buy one where we live in the US, but I am glad we did it last year because the price of lumber has since skyrocketed! Somehow we did it all in 6 months too.
@ItsaDrama
@ItsaDrama 3 года назад
That sounds like a real family venture! What an experience! In answer to your question, no, there are VERY strict building codes to follow here in NZ. You need to be a licensed builder. Apparently, Brian has just told me that there is an exemption that allows you to build your own house once every 5 years. But you must adhere to the building code and the house will be strictly inspected before your code of compliance is issued. Still, though, you cannot do the plumbing, drainage, or gas fitting unless you are licensed and certified. The only reason that Brian could do the plumbing/heating and electrics is because he is 'certified ' in all three trades. 😊

@@ItsaDrama thank you! Here in Texas property taxes are ridiculous. A good friend of mine pays around $20k a year for a 5000 sq.ft. home. People in rural areas will raise animals like cattle, horses, chickens just so they can qualify as a rural property to reduce property taxes. Apparently raising a bunch of farm animals is cheaper than paying property taxes. When we buy houses here in the US, especially in places like Texas, California, and NY, one thing we have to ask is how much are the taxes in that area.

All your previous podcasts work, but the last 2 always say "impossible to download".
