Building a Large Garage Part 5: Framing Windows and tips to Laying Out Metal Siding

In this episode of building a large garage, I share with you the proper way of framing windows in a post frame structure. It isn't the same as framing windows in tradition stick frame walls. Thanks to the unique framing method of post frame, we do not have loads on top of our windows which greatly reduces materials needed to achieve our desired goal.
Once our windows are framed out, I share with you some tips and tricks to laying house wrap on a post frame structure as well as a set of quick tips to laying out metal siding. I don't go into too much detail because I did make another, more in depth video here! • Layout Metal Siding Ti...
I recommend a Diablo Pruning Blade when cutting down your house wrap. They work phenomenally.

Thanks from Mercer County, IL. I watch a lot of building shows. I bought my house when I was 71. Now I'm 73 and took time out for cancer treatments. Now I'm ready to finish the bathroom. I do a lot of reading, too. I ordered a book on how to build a shed, but I want to turn it in to a greenhouse.

Your attention to detail continues to how my mind. Planning ahead where the ribs are going to end up on the wall and adjusting to make them align exactly where you want. Adjusting the location of the window frame so it aligns nicely with the ribs. This is next-level stuff. Things I never would have thought of if I was learning on my own. Thanks for sharing!

Lol 17:00 if you have done tile work you get it. Nice job Kyle. Instead of using an "ahul" you can use a "c" frame press punch. Think hydrolic press with a punch on one end..

I know that you show everything that you are doing as you go,but I think you need to hold a work shop for people that really wants to learn the trade. As a retired framer I would come just to see how things have changed in the last 10 years. Also I think with all the details you do it would be helpful to younger viewers that they to can take pride in a job well done. Just a thought.😎

Interesting, you do all this layout in your head. Me on the otherhand would fire up Visio and quickly draw that layout so I could visually reference it and then I or others could refer to that layout.

The temporary diagonals are the chains holding the structure square. The steel acts as your shear wall when installed inside and out. The same as sheeting on a stick frame.

So that dirt/mud that is a foot lower near the footers. Is that a problem during construction until it gets filled in?

So i have 3 staplers and none of them work so i use cap nails and then remove the plastic heads later or just aluminum siding nails. This is just for my home projects, i'm not a pro builder. But questions, why don't you use a battery stapler and which ones work and don't work and what staples to use. This would be a nice tool video to talk about which staplers work and don't work because i've given up.

Leveled it vertically, maybe sounds better? Also, I am always amazed at how wll you three work together, it is really apparent when you do fast forward time lapse, like in this video with the wainscoat install.

Kyle I think you are being too hard on yourself brother. That gradeboard will last 30 years I bet before anyone has to do anything to it. The only time I really ever see am issue with treated lumber rotting is where water gets in and sits, and never dries. Ground level of posts buried in concrete and splices of decking boards on the middle of a joist 2 examples. I agree the foundation wall is better, but you go all the way with the "rat board" too. Well done. I notice that you use impacts for attaching the sheet metal lag screws. Is there a reason that you don’t use drills and adjust the clutch so that you would never overdrive a screw? Thanks.

Hey Kyle. Given your good relationship with your metal/steel supplier, can i suggest they make you lengths (horizontal) of wainscoat as opposed to the current short vertical ones and on long buildings this would help you hugely. Obviously with the correct spacing similar to the current vertical ones. Cheers man.

Hey Kyle, great job on a;l your vids. I subed about a year ago and have learned lots . I'm not a builder but getting educated to communicate with contractors. My build is scheduled to happen February 2021. Is it OK to install vinyl insulated single hung windows with nailing flanges as can be purchased in local big box stores?
