I like the idea shown here, my science teacher did this as well but glued the mirror straight to the cone. I've found that if you glue a spring to the cone and then the mirror to that it works surprisingly well. The spring just needs to be stiff enough to only move when frequencies are played.

Very cool! You could try to play a sawtooth wave from one of the speakers, then you'll see the actual sinusoid of the other speaker. A sawtooth will put a lot more strain on the mirror and the rods though, because it returns in one sharp jerk.

You Gotta Play Jerobeam Fenderson Music on it!

Cool ! It reminds me of my first Heatkit tube scope I built back in 1972. I kept staring at some interference pattern with it.

If you can get hold of La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 and shape it into a cube surrounded by coils, then you could evade the problem of mass inertia, which usually makes high frequencies impossible to display properly, since the power of the tiny speakers isn't sufficient for throwing around the mass of the mirror, struts and speaker membranes and coils. Just google for materials, which change their refractive index by applying a magnetic field, then google for companies that produce/sell that stuff ;) Jerobeam's music usually is recorded in 192kHz and 24bits(even 32?), a necessity for creating fine details in his lissajous, which come as ultrasound in a lot of cases, so you can see funny stuff, but basically hear only a square baseline and a phased sine melody with some funky ultra high pitched noise^^ The piece "Nuclear Black Noise" is by far my favorite ;)

The non-linearity is actually indicating the resonant frequency nodes of the system built (speaker and mirror). I doubt that you were twisting the amplitude knob at the same time as increasing the frequency (not amplitude). Cool video.

невероятно, много добре... М оже даа се работи върху увеличаване на честотата, а също и върху затваряне на цялото устройство в кутия с хартиен екран на който лазара да проектира... Браво!

You know what'd be awesome for this, if there were some material that had refractive properties like a prism, but could have its refractive index changed by something, say by exposing it to a magnetic field or something. This'd then give us a solid state solution. But I doubt such a substance even exists.

Hello Spudhead: Look up Pockel Cells. In the days before CDs, a company, Discovision (Universal Studios + IBM) I worked for used them to modulate a laser beam to write data onto a glass master video disk that had a light sensitive coating on it like a PC board. Those master disks were then developed like exposed PCBs are then plated. The resulting master was used to injection mold a plastic video disk (Laserdisc) the foreunner to CDs and DVDs. I did not work in the section that did the mastering work but I'm thinking the Pockel cell probably could be modulated quite rapidly since our company produced movie video discs. Magnavox and Pioneer made a videodisc player that played our product.

I wonder if there would be much difference if surface transducer or bone conductive speaker was used instead of regular speakers.
