Fernanda Abra leads a crucial conservation initiative along the roadways of Brazil, where vehicles annually kill about 475 million vertebrates - more than double the country's human population. She spearheads over 300 projects targeting roads with high wildlife casualties.
Her approach includes installing underpasses and canopy bridges to ensure safe travel for terrestrial wildlife, like big cats, and arboreal creatures like monkeys, effectively reducing roadkill mortality. These structures also reconnect fragmented habitats, promoting genetic diversity and overall population health across various species.
Abra's efforts not only decrease wildlife deaths but also illustrate the successful merging of conservation with infrastructure development, setting a precedent for worldwide practices that harmonize human progress with environmental stewardship.

I love to see that we humans can change what has become a reality for our wildlife. Let's bring that hope to every country of the world 🌎

This is so hopeful and necessary. Anything we can do to protect and support native wildlife and biodiversity is a must do!! Wildlife across the map is up against so many threats resulting from human behavior, and roads are high on the list. Safe passages is a best solution. Great work Fernanda and team!

I mean it's a shame we're only realizing something so obvious now. Really, it should be illegal to build _any_ road without frequent underpasses for wildlife.

- So anything not in an expensive metal deathbox has to scuttle through dark underground tunnels like worms and rats and hope they don't cross at the same time as a predator, because the outdoors are the exclusive domain of gd mf cars? 😠 - 7:45 If truck drivers don't bother to avoid tearing the roof off of their trucks and keep going under the "canopener" bridge (as seen on yovo68's channel), what makes you think they'll care about not tearing through an animal-bridge? 😒

After having a challenging day, this has improved my state of mind since footage such as these are my main forms of escapism because it every day, it reminds me that despite all the troubles and tribulations we face, we still have a beautiful and unique planet to call home and many creatures to share it with. Watching those pumas, it reminds me of how their cousins here in Florida are also using those crossings to increase their numbers to ensure their future. Now that some of them were able to move northward successfully, the wildlife corridors that are either developed or being developed can make that into reality and it’s all thanks to the few people who truly care about these animals, just as we should care about our own. Thank you, WILD HOPE. 🌎🌉🌍
