Today we'll wrap up the Texas Air Guard F-4D build. I made a few big errors in my efforts to finish this kit up for Modelmania 2023 - I'll tell you exactly what I did wrong in my conclusions. Overall I'm not at all happy with this result, but I look forward to your feedback and thanks for watching!

Hi John, that F4-D turned out absolutely fantastic, I just love any F4 build series and yours was no exveption, I know you said there were issues but such is live, you seem very happy with the build, so all good, very best regards to you and Mrs G from a Kiwi living in Australia 👍👍👍👍

Hi John enjoyed watching this build series, they are big models so it’s hard to hide those small ‘issues’….which become big issues…it’s good you can openly critique your work then we all learn from ours and ‘others’ mistakes, I did the same a couple years ago here trying to rush finish a model before a comp (Australia) and completely f’ed it….now it’s all about enjoyment and if I think one is good enough after all done I’ll put it in the next show…no pressure, anyway stay safe, cheers!

I'd like to think I can be my own best critic of my work. I think it's important to be honest with yourself if you want to improve. Appreciate your feedback and thanks for watching!

The camo came out really nice. With the finger print on the clear canopy, did you dip those parts in clear?
@MisterGsWorkbench
@MisterGsWorkbench Год назад
I didn't. It wouldn't have mattered since the fingerprint is etched within the transparency. The surface is glass smooth already. Thanks for the suggestion.

Might be worth it to try. Maybe even just a drop on the damage then sand and polish again.

John I am building the same kit at the moment. Did you have trouble attaching the back clamshell with the fuselage? Mine has a step.
@MisterGsWorkbench
@MisterGsWorkbench Год назад
I bought the kit from someone who had started the fuselage - the refueling door and the top were already attached. I can see where it would have a step though. Not sure how it was corrected though. Apologies for not having a better answer.

For one of Tamiya's older 1/32 kits it wasn't too bad. That whole canopy thing killed me. Thanks for watching!

@@MisterGsWorkbench I Agree it's heartbreaking to work so hard on a project and something happens you just have to carry on. You raised a good point about enjoying the hobby to relax. I'm just about to start a F4E phantom of the 457th Air Force Reserve Fort Worth. Excellent channel Kind Regards Sean

Well, as a 1/32 guy.. There are better/easier Tamy subjects.. The F-16 is way better engineered. But honestly, the only other Phantom out there is the Revell.. And it takes a lot more work. BTW, why did you keep the BDR (battle damage repair) scars on her? Not dogging on you, but am just curious…
@MisterGsWorkbench
@MisterGsWorkbench Год назад
There are certainly better 1/32 Tamiya kits that I referenced towards the end of the video. I've built the Revell Phantom and it's not too bad actually. The reason I didn't do all the extra work to remove those patches was because I really wanted to get this kit built. I can guarantee the quickest way for that plane to have found its way to the dump would have been a prolonged series of sanding, riveting, and more sanding. I'm honestly at a point that I build instead of trying to fix everything. Appreciate your feedback - thanks for watching!

Yeah, Jarrod, the Phantom has a lot of problems. Unfortunately I've got to build at least 2 more of them at some point. 😂

@@jimsmodels they're fine kits, just not Tamiya's best.

@Mister G's Workbench yeah once you get past the couple of major issues (wing dihedral, tail fit and heat shield fit) it's just small annoyances honestly. I did do the E though, a few different parts to be fair

@boydwaechter8958 Год назад
Despite the issue with the clear part, your model was still the best 1/32nd Jet at Modelmania. Too bad the judges used this one small flaw to cull your model out of the running. Another example of how bad the judging was at this show.
@MisterGsWorkbench

Thanks Boyd - agreed about the judging at Modelmania. Appreciate your support!

Strong disagree on this one. Looking over the video, there's a lot of flaws that build up to fall outside a winning position. The hot exhaust zone isn't fitted properly, the canopies aren't square, there's visible wash left, the light for the navy refueling probe hasn't been blended in, there's a seam visible for the panel insert for the refueling door etc. The judges can be blamed maybe but there's plenty of evidence visible in this video to support the placement.
