If I don’t say it in each video, please know that I am very grateful for ALL these tutorials and want to thank you immensely for all the work you have put into it. I’ve been out of the hardware synth scene since the Yamaha EX5 and upon purchasing the M8x I quickly realized how much things have progressed and how out of touch I am with the UI, etc.. I have a bunch more videos planned, but I’ve hit a bit of a snag in the form of a broken elbow that is going to need surgery… looking to see which I can do with just my left hand! The EX5 was a great synth, although a bit of a pig to program compared to Montage - I had an EX5R back in the day, lovely bit of kit!
@@KierDarby Oh man sorry to hear about your elbow. That’s got to hurt. I hope the surgery goes well and it heals quickly. RE: the EX5…it definitely was/is a bear to program. I have to admit I relied on better programmers than me via EX5tech and the excellent amount of great voices shared on the forum. Actually still have it and it’s still working. I had maxed both the RAM and EEPROM and last F/W. Swapped the floppy for a SCSI Jazz Drive which still works. It was mainly studio kept. I have been wanting to take a peak inside and see if anything with PSU is looking odd.
@AudioAtmos I actually sold my EX5R to Derek Cook, who seems to be the leading advocate for the EX5 these days. I must confess I do miss some of its features, particularly the VL stuff.
@@KierDarby Derek was the EX5 man for sure. I’m on the YamahaMusicians forum now under the name ChrisN. I voted for your color scheme suggestion and hope Yamaha takes it seriously. Have a good one.
@AudioAtmos thanks for the vote! I can’t believe how badly the colours have been messed up with M, they’ve taken something that was great and made it way worse.
Nice video! Just an FYI - @7:15 Rhythm Patterns - you showed 'changing an arp' - you can use the 'Arp Select' buttons to change, or assign any or all of the 8 possible arps. CAVEAT - the last arp button you select becomes the arp # in effect in the performance itself. So if the selected arp # was #3 when you added the rhythm pattern but you selected arp #5 to change the arp for the new rhythm then when you return to the performance arp #5 will now be the arp number for ALL of the parts until/unless you change it again. Just a side effect people should be aware of - the 'selected arp number' applies to the performance as a whole and ALL of its parts.
I learn something new about these instruments every day, thanks @billevans7488 Not sure why it didn’t occur to me, that any change to the arp # within the rhythm pattern UI would of course apply to the arp # applied to the performance in general. I’ll cover this in more detail in the arps video to come soon.
