Nice job capturing those exploding caps! For a decent P4 experience try using a Socket 478 board with Intel 865 chipset 🙂

I've been trying to track down an ASUS P4T for maximum RDRAM nostalgia. I have the capability of capacitor repair, but man those 423 socket MB's are impossible to find for a good price. On the flipside, i have a ton of 478 boards.

Yes that is the sweet spot indeed :)

Had a 478 as my first pc so i have bias to them. With 775 it always feels like the p4 is a entry level chip and just want to jump to a c2q. With the 478 the 3ghz p4 are the top dogs haha. Have a few msi boards set aside for a xp build. Only issue is the lack of sata.

G'day from the Kimberley - Australia. My P4 build is a 478 on the 865 chipset, 3.2GHz with two Voodoo 2 in SLi. It runs Windows XP. But my favourite is my old PII 450 with Voodoo 2s in SLi (running a Dell/Intel motherboard haha!). Keen to see how you go with the P4 Victor!

I built and GAVE someone a retro gaming PC that was a ASUS Board, Athlon 64 x2 6000+, 4GB DDR2-800 Kingston Hyper X, 300GB Velociraptor, 500GB Western Digital, Linksys Wifi G PCI, Radeon HD 5670 GDDR5 1GB, HP Dual Layer Lightscribe Burner. --- THEY THREW IT AWAY BECAUSE THEY SAID THEIR NEW PRINTER DIDN'T WORK WITH IT.

Most people probably are better off just getting a crappy laptop and effing off 🤣 I've put together some special builds over the years and I have felt the satisfaction of giving someone their "new" legacy system running for entertainment or business.

That is so sad they throw it out! I only gave a girl a Pentium 4 from Medion :D So if they throw it away it is fine :D

The second board probably shutdown due to an overheating CPU. Give it another try with the cooler mounted as it should! I've seen a lot of LGA775 systems booting and then shutting down due to poorly mounted coolers! 😉

The second board, I'd wager the shutdown was likely from overheating since that cooler clip is broke. 'Retro' for me is pre common 64bit chips. So P4/Athlon XP and earlier.

Many years ago a tantalum capacitor popped while I was powering up a pentium 3 board, the the flying fragment missed my eye just by a hair. Nowadays I always wear a safety goggle or glasses when powering up old boards. Btw for your first board, I was already suspecting there was a short (in this case the exploded capacitor) because the cpu fan was not spinning, indicating the psu had detected a short in the power rail and shutting down. The Corsair could pump a lot more current and didn't consider it as a short, so the bad capacitor exploded, which is not a bad thing because you now know which component is faulty and needed to be replaced. The first psu is working fine I suspect. For second board you need to install the cpu heat sink properly. It shut down only because the cpu was overheating.

If you're going to build a P4 system. I recommend the asus p4p800 varients with the intel 865 chipset. Not as good as the athlon64 imo but it will perform very well for most xp era games.
@NSHG
@NSHG Год назад
P4P800 wouldn't be a good choice at all. The VRMs are pretty subpar, and that's from someone who owns both P4P800-E Deluxe, P4C800-E Deluxe AND an ABIT IS7-E. The ABIT mainboard has much better VRM than ASUS does.

@kontenterrorist2449
@kontenterrorist2449 Год назад
We literally have the same CPU+mobo combination then, although mine came with a GeForce4 MX480 (and an attempt to run a broken Radeon 9500). I should some day spend some time and money on it to finally get the effects of the previous chainsmoking owner out of it (read: new case and PSU)

@CantankerousDave

@@victorbart My Matrox video capture board only does video overlay with certain Matrox graphics cards, and the Parhelia was the most overkill of the bunch, so I grabbed one when I found it on eBay. I’ve never actually used it for gaming.

For me retro stuff ends where we meet modern standards: SATA, PCI-E, x86-64 and multicore CPUs. So the borderline lies around 2004.

Maybe the first power supply was able to detect the unstable voltage on the capacitors and had some kind of safety feature not to power on. Some power supplies also do that when there is a short on the board or other components. Happened to me with a FSP power supply and it accepted to power on only after i solved the shorting issue

Socket 775 and AGP slot? Interesting.... Next time try to grab a 955x motherboard, they're really cool looking and have a lot of decent features. Try to pair it with a high speed p4(3.6/3.8) or p4ee , and a decent gfx card from that era (7800/x1900) I recently built a similar dream machine with a P4 HT 3.6, 4GB DDR2, P5WD2 Premium mobo, and a bit newer gfx card (8800GTS). Runs everything from 2003-2005 on the highest settings with no problems and even runs Crysis (at low-med settings on 1024x768 lol)

I915 to most i945 chipsets really dont support it. You can try it, but without succes (usually without damage). Look at wiki - list of Intel chipsets, if your chipset can or cannot support it.
