Building a Polytunnel (Part 2) || What I learned in its first year and what i'm changing!

Part 2 of my Polytunnel Self-Build. Looking over it's first year and what i'm changing for next year.
Building a polytunnel is pretty easy, if you haven't seen Part 1 it is here -
• Building a Polytunnel ...
Polytunnels / polyhouses are so incredibly useful to extend the growing season and allow us to grow warm climate crops that wouldn't survive even in out best summers. I was asked so many times to put a video together of how i build mine but i think this video will be really useful to anyone who is thinking of building their own.
I look at how to put in supports for tomato plants and planting layouts to avoid blocking light. And how successful my crops were.
One thing i was surprised about was how different the climate was in the polyhouse vs the greenhouse, in terms of humidity and temperatures. Now i understand the differences i will be swapping around some crops for the 2021 season.
I have gone through a lot of the summer footage and I really hope this video is useful!
This season i will be growing more of everything and if you're interested in following along please think about subscribing. I release a new vlog every Tuesday afternoon and the odd Saturday special. Would be lovely to have you along.

As the bed is not deep enough to put in canes for suport an easy fix as you have membrain over soil just get metal tubes and hammer them in and through the membrain into the ground underneath then put canes bambo etc into the metal tubes so easy and wont strain the structure i use this method all the time it works very well chicken crap is fab for growing fruit Best Regards

Jessie, You have made many comparisons between your poly house and your green house. Your greenhouse is colder and less humid and the poly tunnel warmer and more humid. For those of us trying to decide which to build what would you advise. I guess I don't understand how a single wall poly tunnel could be warmer then the greenhouse or why one is more humid then the other. I like your simple low cost creative solutions. Thank you.

My heart just stopped Jess and mum, I can imagine how you must have felt you had put so much time and effort into making the poly tunnel and it was looking great. Did they cause damage to others plots? The positive is you could repair it and your plants were ok. I hope you handed the knife to the police so they could get finger prints. It was great to see this update Jess and how well the plants did, tomato’s to die for, well done to you and mum. On a different topic. How big is your comfrey patch i.e number of plants in patch. I have recently planted some seeds in a grow bag as have a small garden. And well worth watching video always good to get to see how things progress. Stay safe Jess and mum.

Your drill bits will get chipped and blunted, rattling around in that junk drawer. I recommend getting a block of soft timber and drilling a hole for each one. You can even put a couple of drops of rust-preventing oil in each hole before storing the bits in them.

Your tomatoes did massively better in the polytunnel than mine did outside. It was just too cold outside last year and mine struggled ripening with the exception of the tumbling toms which I bought as plants and were further along. I'd love the space for a greenhouse or polytunnel but don't really have space unless I rethink things. The fact you nearly filled your polytunnel with raised beds has given me some ideas that it might not actually be wasted space. My biggest problem is the fact our garden is north facing so I'm limited for space to grow. My current thought was to put a frame tall enough for tomatoes around the raised bed and use that to both hold up the tomatoes and cover in plastic. Not sure now. The evil person that did that to your polytunnel is scum. Thanks for the videos I just found them and there so useful

Hi there. Love the vlog, hate what those mindless vandals did! Can I make 2 suggestions from my experience of growing tomatoes in the greenhouse..... You don't have to tie them in with string, just gently wind the main stem of the tomato around the string support as it grows. Really quick and easy and far less faffy. ( Leave the string a bit more baggy to allow for this.) Secondly.....use nylon string not hemp. Half way through the season my hemp string rotted where it entered the soil and the whole plant fell down when it was laden with fruits! Best of luck thus year! 😀

Excellent couple of videos about your polytunnel. I only recently discovered your channel, but I am already a fan. In light of your extended nightshade growing season, perhaps a solution to help get your winter/early spring crops is to interplant/sow your greens between your established plants. When your tomatoes and peppers are ready to come out, the lettuces and chard will already have a good start. That's what I have to do here in Texas since my nightshades will keep on going outside until about January. Congrats on the success of your tunnel!

I built my polytunnel from scratch in 2012 using scaffold bars, 48mm MDPE blue water pipe, timber. I originally had a fully polythene cover but in the first winter it got ripped of by high winds in a storm. I then put a 'mesh skirt' on the tunnel and just polythene from 3ft above the ground upwards; this doesn't lose me much heat retention and because I mostly use it as an 'orchard house' to grow fruit trees in it gives the winter wind chill blowing through the tunnel which is good for the dormant fruit trees in winter - I leave the doors open at both ends in winter to reduce the chances of wind damage. The tunnel keeps birds of my cherries and stops the rain from splitting the skins and with mesh over the doorways in summer I can keep wasps, etc out also.

Hi Jessie - I came back to watch the poly build videos because I wanted to see how you built and filled the beds. I have a greenhouse (diy) and the beds are in ground. What I am finding is that the soil takes a very long time to warm up so I'm thinking to build raised beds in there to help push that along. Along the way I learned about your tomato plant spacing and feeding. Thanks!

Great job with your gardening and video production! One suggestion I would have (from the Mittleider method) is instead of burying the bottom end of your trellis strings for the tomatoes just run a wire near the ground under and parallel to the wire at the top and tie off your strings to that wire. Also instead of tying the plant to the string just twist the top (new growth) of the plant around the string as the tomato plant grows. I've used this method for several years and it works great. For "string" we use bailing twine here in the US which is strong and inexpensive.

Swapping Chilli for Aubergine makes a whole bunch of timing sense to me too, based on my own experiences here last year: my Aubergines started cropping and finished way sooner. I was still waiting on my Chilli to ripen (grown in pots outside). But I’ve started Chilli and Peppers off already - hope to see your seedlings soon too 😍Aubergine next and Tomato late February. Will you be doing outdoor Toms this year? You impart lots of valuable nuggets of knowledge in your VLOGs. I hope I remember the Red Spider Mite vs Humidity tip when I encounter that, but I fear I will forget. When you write your Allotment and Recipes book 😉please do some detailed chapters so I can find your knowledge bombs! I will pre-order!!!

Lovely video....... all them toms, for the red spider you may wish to consider Phytoseiulus persimilis and Amblyseius Californicus these are spidermite predators available from Amazon and work very well. I ran an integrated pest management system in a large propagation dept and nursery and used these and many others for years, seaweed fertiliser on the foliage can deter , but sometimes you need something a little more aggressive......being eaten fits the bill........somewhat.

sadly this is the sort of thing you have to put up with Jessie and the reason why I'm giving up my plot. We have had 5 or 6 breakings in two years and I lost most of my poultry when the numnuts let them out to see what was in the pens rather than look thru the windowns and so they became foxfood ... I'mm moving to the back garden to grow a few veggies now on about a 50th of the sapce I had but hopefully secure. regarding feeding the toms, I always feed at every watering but at 1/4 strength or there abouts

I'm building something similar but have been warned off plastic on my square greenhouse style structure because of possibly having to re-tension it at some point. The thinking being it would be harder than on a polytunnel. My planned structure is similar shape to yours though so maybe it's not such a massive problem, particularly in a British climate.

@@MaLiArtworks186 Someone (I can't find it) mentioned that for tomatoes, they can self-pollinate with air movement (so... leave a fan running?). So I am presuming that if it's truly shielded from pollinators, you have to go with self-pollinators, add fans and/or hand-pollinate.
