I’m from Australia and that looks like an old redwood (very hard wood) rail sleeper! I’m sure it can’t be, but they are a familiar sight here. They are known to be very hard, last for decades and are very beautiful, with a pressure wash. I’m looking to make a bench, so thanks for the hints and tips!

The reclaim looks like Cedar wood to me, beautiful piece

Thank you. I thought possibly cedar but it seems a deeper red than any cedar I’ve seen before. Most of the cedar I’ve used has either been more orange or a lighter pinky red. It’s a very hard wood too, which is why I initially presumed it was oak. It may be an Asian hardwood but to be honest my knowledge of those woods is very little!

Defo looks like Jarrah wood mate, Jarrah is heavy and produces orange(ish) dust. It's used a lot for sleepers. Really good hardwood👍

I think you’re right. I actually saw some jarrah sleepers for sale this week and thought they looked exactly the same as this one.

It looks a bit like cedar but it’s really dense and hard. I still have no idea what it is but I’m leaning towards an Asian hardwood but I have no firm idea!

I never would have seen the potential of that sleeper. What a beautiful piece of wood was hiding under the filth!

Thanks, I’d have been more than happy with a nice bit of oak but this turned out a bit more unique.
