It wasn’t a cross it was cross shaped, and it’s shaped like that because a single pole standing straight up won’t be effective for holding a giant rectangle of cloth. There needs to be two beams, one horizontal one vertical. The horizontal one connects to the edges of the sail and the vertical one holds up the horizontal beam.
